Twenty-plus years ago, I was sitting in my underwear playing the Nintendo Entertainment

System version oPopeye. The premise o the game was simple: get past Brutus and saveOlive Oyl.

Last week, I was sitting in my underwear yet again, but this time I was playing Bioshock:Infnite, and instead o just saving the girl, I was fying rom rails attached to a citysuspended in the sky while a crazed religious anatic spouted his conviction in my ear.

While some o us malign growing up, video games have been pushing or it sinceMortal Kombatwas released on the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. Most gamesand developers dont long or a simpler time with ewer responsibilities. They push theenvelope, and a lot o times they arent araid to drench the envelope in blood thinkingthey are making a point.

However, most video game developers and publishers conuse the relationship o bloodand maturity. They think that i they ramp up kill count or place their game in some bloodyhistorical context, then it provides some deeper meaning. Call o Dutyis a game aboutwar, but its more about the act o war rather than the consequences or meaning.

But war and blood sell better than political and ideological motivations. So big gamestend to go with what works. When publishers know something works, they pushadvertisements. Halo, Call o Dutyand even Diabloget big play on the PR circuit becausebusinessmen know they can make a dollar on it.

Bioshock: Infniteisntlike those games. Sure, ithas the blood and superpowers that some gamerscrave, but at its corethere is so much moregoing on. The wordsthe characters say have

more value than the hotmetal spraying rom yourmachine gun. There iscommentary on Americanexceptionalism, racism, religious extremism andthe consequences oaggressive capitalism.

2K games and Irrational Games are placing a big bet with the huge advertising push orBioshock: Infnite.

Whats at stake? IBioshock: Infnitedoesnt sell, then the guns wont be blamed, the storywill. Businessmen will claim its gamers couldnt access the big ideas, which is a polite wayo saying your narrative got in the way o my bloodshed. This will give big publishers the

ammunition they need to shoot down big, risky projects like Bioshock: Infnite. It could leadto even more derivative shooters hitting the market as publishers squeeze as much moneyout o war and aliens while they can.

While small developers can ll the narrative void, those developers cant make games asbig and bombastic as Infnite. They will continue to fourish in the kick-starter market, butthat doesnt always und proessional actors, motion capture and impressive graphics, which can be boons in interactive storytelling.

So, I raise my glass to Bioshock: Infnitebecause its an incredibly un game and tells oneo the best stories in video games. And its a story that can only be told in a video game.

My only hope is that 10 million other people eel the same so games like Bioshock: Infnitewill continue to exist.

I already spent the main portion o this pagediscussing the value o Bioshocks narrative,so I guess its time to tell you how good/badthe game is, right?

Listen, this game is incredible. Its one o thebest games to come out in the last decade. It has everything you could ever want ina video game: incredible setting, sharplywritten story and un combat.

The game ollows the exploits o BookerDeWitt as he works to bring Elizabeth backto New York rom Columbia, a city foatingaround in 1912. DeWitt has his own demons

to expunge, and Elizabeth is the ticket indoing so.

But upon your initial visit to Columbia, it isobvious things arent what they seem. Andthats where Im going to stop. This gamesplot shouldnt be ruined or ANYBODY.

The game isnt perect, but its imperectionsare overshadowed by everything else it doesright. It has great atmosphere, amazingcharacters Elizabeth is yet another emalevideo game character that people can lookup to and its also a un game to play, which is important when you are trying tomake a good video game.

Dont wait or it to go on sale. Stop readingthis and go buy the game. Its creatorsdeserve your $60.

Everybodys talking about Norman Music Festival 6, which is most denitely oneo my avorite days o the year, but today Id like to tell you about another day thatis equally as important in my eyes, a day that not everybody else is talking aboutbecause theyre not part o the culture. That holiday arrives on April 20. And whatholiday is it? You guessed correctly: Record Store Day.

Record Store Day is about more than a sentimental culture holding on stubbornly tothe past in a changing world. It is an expression o value in the tangible moment.Deeply passionate music lovers spend a great deal o their time submersing theirears in sound and song, and humans who do this over a long period o timebecome intensely sensitive to the music experience, and rened tastes need renedexperiences. Record Store Day is about a community o people who share theexperience o investment in sound and song and the liestyle that comes along withit.

Record Store Day is a modern holiday or modern Americans. Its history may beshort, but it has momentum and represents a fourishing trend in America: the localexperience. Especially in Norman (and Oklahoma and America in general), value starts at home. Why go to a national chain restaurantwhen you could go to a local restaurant that provides a unique experience deriving rom a locally grown vision and locally grownaesthetic? When things become too easy and too repetitive, they lose their meaning.

Vinyl culture (and the independent record store experience in particular) reestablishesmusic as a local and meaningul experience, and Record Store Day is the nationalholiday that recognizes and reveres and reminds us that those are important values toour musical experience. The worldwide international pop music experience is deadbecause it oers less and less o a real connection. The trend o music is homeward.

As it turns out, you can go home again. It just takes investment.

Record Store Day is the representation o a culture o people investing in themselves

and their communities and an experience. Believe it or not, Mel Guapo was oncea rampant pirateer o digital music, but it was that experience that eventually ledhim back to vinyl and the local record store experience. Why? Because I literallydownloaded everything, and that eventually led me to the philosophical question:now that youve got it all, what will you listen to? We can only listen to so much music

in our lietime. We are limited creatures in this sense. So that means that i were going to listen to anything at all, we should invest in itbecause, as we all know, you reap what you sow. Which is to say, what you get back is in accordance to what you invest in any giventhing.

For music lovers, Record Store Day is an investment in their community, but more importantly, its an investment in themselves. I youveever been lucky enough to make it out to Record Store Day, you know how much o a payback you truly receive.(Record Store Day will be celebrated around the country, and more particularly right here in Norman on April 20 at Guestroom Recordson Main, one o the proud, ocial independent record stores around America participating in the sacred holiday. This will be eaturinglive music, ree drinks and usually an assortment o ree seven-inch records while supplies last.)

For more inormation:Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering o independent recordstore owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about theunique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the U.S.and thousands o similar stores internationally.

This is the one day that all o the independently owned record stores cometogether with artists to celebrate the art o music. Special vinyl and CD releases andvarious promotional products are made exclusively or the day, and hundreds oartists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make specialappearances and perormances. Festivities include perormances, cookouts, bodypainting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on.Metallica ofcially kicked o Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Franciscoon April 19, 2008, and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturdayevery April. - From the www.recordstoreday.com About Us page

When Sherri Coale took the University o Oklahoma head womens basketball

coach job 17 seasons ago, the program was in bad shape: dead, no attendanceand not on the national landscape o the sport. Flash ahead to now: the Soonersare a staple in the NCAA tournament and are a national power.

The Sooners have won six Big 12 regular season titles and our Big 12 tournamenttitles, and made 13 straight NCAA tournament appearances, eight Sweet 16showings, three Final Fours and a shot at a national title. So what Coach Coalehas achieved is nothing short o greatness.

This season started with so much hope and dreaming o being in the national titlegame again. Returning players and a mix o young talent had the Sooner aithulexcited about the season. Then UCLA showed up, bullied the Sooners and wonat the LNC 86-80. That was on top o the loss o Kaylon Williams to a seasonalAchilles injury, Lyndsey Cloman quitting basketball due to a back injury and losing newcomer Maddie Manning to a knee

    injury as well.

The killer blow came in the game versus North Texas, when everyone at the LNC saw and heard the pain in the heart andsoul o the team, Whitney Hand. Hand was going up or a simple lay up when her knee gave out. Hand lay on the court inpain and the LNC ell silent. The North Texas coach was trying to console Hand, and at that moment, Sooner ans had towonder, what next?

Coach Coale and the Sooners had to dig down deep, and that is what they did with a minimal bench and having torun the starters at an entire game pace. Coach Coale got the most out o every single minute the girls played on the court.Overcoming all odds and multiple injures, the Sooners had a good year in the Big 12, being competitive in almost everysingle game and giving the Sooner Nation something to cheer about and a team to get behind.

Even with all the Final Fours and the All-Americans, this Sooner team by ar got more out o their players than any otherteam in the Coale era. Ater Hand was lost or the year, do-everything player Joanna McFarland became an absolute

monster on the court. McFarland took over as the emotional leader on and o the court, spearheading the run at the end othe year with her will and determination to get the Sooners to the Sweet 16.

In the rematch with the UCLA Bruins, a team that pushed and shoved the Sooners around in the early season, it wasMcFarland and Aaryn Ellenberg that would not let the Sooners go quietly and led to the revenge victory o 85-72.

The Sooners season came to an end in Oklahoma City against the Tennessee Volunteers, but in my opinion this was byar the best coaching job Coach Coale has done in her career with what she had to work with and the nal results. CoachCoale is an amazing coach and this season proves that much. In the upcoming years, you have to think the basketball godswill smile upon the Sooner program and some luck will come their way, but until the luck arrives, Sooner Nation can behappy knowing it has one o the best in the business at the helm o the team.

I admit it: my ood pyramid is o balance. There are only our sections. The bottom, where the grains would normallybe in a traditional ood pyramid, contains only chocolate. Opposite that, at the very top, is ruits and vegetables eatsparingly. Next up is the peanut butter group and, my personal avorite, the cheese group.

Each time I go to the Mont, I know I will get my daily servings o cheese. When I think o the amiliar and beloved Normandestination, I think o just that, the delectable cheese concoctions pulled pork nachos, cheese ries and, o course, thequeso. Oh, yes. Recently I read a Buzzeed article that spotlighted the best college oods around the country, and our veryown Mont made the cut with its queso. Indeed, whenever my riends and I are having a bad day, I console them with theprospect o drowning our troubles in Sooner Swirls and the spicy, cheesy snack.

(http://www.buzzeed.com/emofy/best-college-campus-oods-in-america i youre interested. The Mont is number 16.)

I I dont have a jones or comort ood, the Monts atmosphere lures me in. From the outside, one sees a vine-coveredbuilding and a patio dotted with umbrellas and tiki huts. It looks exotic, like youre actually sitting on the patio o alocal Mexican restaurant where piping hot tortillas spiral toward your plate and icy margaritas wash away the burn ohomemade hot salsa. Actually, that sounds pretty similar to the Mont.

On the inside, it looks like a cozy library. Booths sit on either side o a crackling replace (in the wintertime, never duringthe inerno that is Oklahoma summer). One can usually nd a bachelorette party or a 21st birthday occurring in the blueroom, a circular seating arrangement thats more exclusive. I mysel wrote an unintelligible message in one o the bluerooms bookshel books on my 21st. Good times.

I I hear the word Mont and dont crave the queso or the heavenly cheese ries, perectly crispy and coated in cheese andsmoky bacon bits, then I immediately think drinks. I Sonic is known as drink central in the ast ood arena, then the Montreigns supreme or sit-down restaurants. Who can bypass the Sooner Swirl, the marriage o sweet sangria with tangymargarita? When my nals are done, thats all I can think about. I youre not a an, theres always a mild and ice-creamy

grasshopper, ruity Miami vice or an old-ashioned rum and coke.

Normanites know the Mont is a hallmark o campus eating, but just how legendary is it? Hasnt it always been around?

According to the history page on its website, the Mont sprouted up in the late 20s o o Oklahoma highway US 77. Itserved as an oasis that gave travelers Mexican, American and breakast oods. Back then it was called the Monterrey.Ater its owner Joe Charles died, the restaurant closed in 1968. Though various owners came and went, the building waseventually let vacant. Fortunately, a group o rat boys decided to reopen the restaurant on Oct. 30, 1976, dubbing it TheMont, as it was aectionately known in town.

Today it still thrives. College students, amilies and people o all ages come together to enjoy the historical restaurant inNorman. Rated Best Restaurant in Norman among countless other awards, the Mont is worth stopping by or becoming

    your new habit.

Normans sixth annual Music Festival is just around the corner.

Slated or April 25-27, musicians and attendees will fock to17 stages located across the downtown area rom the 300block o E. Main Street to the railroad tracks. The event is ree, open to the public and this year, it has been expanded tothree days.

This years headliners include alternative-pop/rock bandThe Joy Formidable, rom England, Big Sams Funk Nation,

Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights, JD McPherson, KingKhan & BBQ Show and Ramsay Midwood.

Steven White, president o the Norman Music Alliance, thegroup responsible or oversight o the event, said the MusicFest attracts approximately 10,000 new people each year,

with approximately 70,000 people over three days expectedthis year. White points out that Norman calls itsel the City oFestivals and the Norman Music Festival is a big draw.

First and oremost, its a un event in a clean, sae, urbanenvironment, White said. I believe the Norman MusicFestival adds value to the community whether its a amilyor business looking to relocate in Norman. The three mainevents in Norman the Norman Music Festival, the MedievalFair and Jazz in Juneare all entertainment they [people] canhave with their amilies thats ree.

Many local artists are slated to appear as well. Some, likeBeau Jennings, have appeared at ormer Norman Music Fests.

Jennings says hes played at all but one. He and his band, Beau Jennings and the Tigers, have been together or about ayear and play rock and roll with olk and Americana. Jennings says the estival is good or the city.

I think its a great thing or the city. I have a lot o un every time we play, Jennings says. Well play some new songs androm our Sweet Action ET. Jennings added that he will have ET albums and his whole catalog available at the event.

White and ellow organizers haveworked hard to pull the event togetherwith a variety o musicians andactivities. There will be an area or kidson Saturday. There will be arts andcrats, ace painting and entertainerswandering the crowd while juggling, riding unicycles and perorming magic

tricks. White encourages music lovers toattend. Theres something or everyonerom rock and roll to unkas in BigSams Funky Nationwho White says,Theyre as un as the name o theirband.
