WELCOME

Welcome to the 4th festival of British Cinema at Hay-on-Wye. This year we are bigger, bolder and better with events at the fabulous new cinema at Richard Booth’s Bookshop, as well as at Hay Parish Hall and neighbouring Talgarth, where the Town Hall becomes our largest venue. We are showing an intriguing mix of new, independent, and classic films with stunning themes – music, documentary, comedy, Ziggy Stardust and a homage to Ken Russell and Whisky! Make sure you don’t miss many of the filmmakers who will be available for your questions. There will be new films, old films, kids’ films, experimental films, short films and lots more – we invite you to join us in celebrating the depth and breadth of British Cinema.

Oliver Twist (1948) Certificate: PGDuration: 1 hr 56 min Director: David Lean

To mark Dickens’ bi-centennial we are proud to screen Oliver Twist. Following his superb Great Expectations, Lean made this brilliant crystallisation of Dickens’ second novel. With Alec Guinness’ outstanding performance as Fagin [with that astonishing prosthetic nose] this moving adaptation, a technically impressive and grip-ping tale of Victorian London, has never been bettered. During their adventure, which takes them to Victorian London, they cross swords with Charles Darwin and the Queen herself. Great fun for kids and adults!

Footfalls

(2012)Certificate: N/A

Duration: 20 minDirector: Caroline Lamb

LOCAL SHORTS We are pleased to present 3 short films, all shot in the local area. All 3 through very different stories explore the stages of life, childhood, adolescence and age. The 3 directors will discuss their films and take questions.

Footfalls is a wonderfully uplifting and evocatively filmed collaboration of music and dance. It is directed and choreo-graphed by Caroline Lamb, and is a produc-tion of the Cardiff based ‘Striking Attitudes’ dance group. Beautifully shot on the South Wales coast, it celebrates the “mature, experienced and lived-in body” of the older dancer. Caroline Lamb will be at the screening to answer your questions.

Shot in Herefordshire and the Wye Valley this is a drama about an 11 year old boy, Sam, searching for adventure during the last weeks of the summer holidays. The film explores issues of family life to evoke a tender portrait of contemporary child hood. The film was shot by a professional crew but the entire cast are local amateurs.

First time director Stephen Nex’s film was shot entirely on location near Vowchurch in the Golden Valley. It is the story of David, a slightly odd ball adolescent, determined to get his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and to do it alone. It tells of his encounters on his expedition and his dreams. A charming, beautifully shot little film.

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1973)Certificate: PGDuration: 1 hr 30 min.Director: D.A. PennebakerCast: David Bowie

It is 40 years since the release of David Bowie’s iconic album ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust’. In 1972 David Bowie’s alien alter-ego Ziggy, had invaded the minds of the country’s youth with a killer combination of extrater-restrial rock ‘n’ roll and outra-geous sexuality, all delivered in high-heeled boots, multi-coloured dresses and extravagant make-up. In celebration we present D.A. Pennebaker’s film of the final 1973 Hammersmith Odeon concert.

Carry On Up The Khyber (1968)Certificate: PGDuration: 1 hr 28 minDirector: Gerald ThomasCast: Kenneth Williams, Sid James and Charles Hawtrey

“I haven’t ridden in cars pulled by cows before.”“Bullocks, Mr. Belcher.” “No, I haven’t, honestly.”The whole plot is, of course, absolutely ludicrous, suggesting that the final days of the Raj came about when a British regiment was discovered wearing underpants. As with glass, you can see straight through this movie. Hilarious and witty, this is a diamond of a film.

The Music Lovers (1970)Certificate: 18Duration: 2 hr 3 minDirector: Ken RussellCast: Richard Chamberlain, Glenda Jackson

As a tribute to the late Ken Russell we proudly present The Music Lovers.

“Mr. Russell has told us a lot less about Tchaikovsky than he has about himself as a filmmaker.”

“Quite possibly one of the greatest films of all time, also one of the most under rated and misunderstood bios ever made. Never has a film so flawlessly combined music and image to create the telling of a man’s life through his excessively romantic music combined with equally excessive visuals.”

The Angels’ Share (2012)Certificate: 15Duration: 1 hr 41 minDirector: Ken LoachCast: Paul Brannigan, John Henshaw, Gary Maitland

Ken Loach has always had a flair for comedy, often counterbalanced by bleakness. In The Angels’ Share the balance has shifted. There is violence and deprivation but, for once, Loach provides a way out, a chance . . . This is one of his funniest and most invigorating films – the closest he has come to making a traditional crowd pleaser. A Whisky Galore for the 21st Century.
