Building Learning Together Building Learning Together was

given a grant through Human Re-sources Development Canada New Horizons for Seniors Program. We have developed the C.A.N. project or the “Community Action Network.”

The focus of the work we are doing is to create opportunities for youth and seniors in our community to join to-gether in an intergenerational team as volunteers in BLT programs.

BLT values the skills, knowledge and experience that local seniors have to offer to our programs and we wel-come new senior volunteers to our circle of friends.

‘There are many opportunities in var-ied programs at Building Learning Together and we do not expect vol-unteers to make a regular commit-ment of time if this is not feasible. A few hours on an occasional basis is welcomed too or for a “special’ event.

Current volunteers work in Munch-kinlands as a grandbuddy (lots of op-portunities to cuddle babies), on the Words on Wheels bus, Stone Soup Kitchen making treats for our Munch-kinland and other programs; at the Technology Learning Centre for those who can help teach technological skills, eg.

If Qualicum Beach Seniors Centre has seniors who need help to learn how to use new phones or gadgets there are lots of FREE workshops or 1:1 help. See the website/ library for times.

Lastly, there is a great opportunity to volunteer or take part in our musical groups led by Gerry Barnum, a well known local musician who is a staff member.

W e have heard many times that we can reduce our risk of cancer by participating in

60 minutes of moderate exercise per day and 60 minutes of vigorous exer-cise one day per week. What we have-n’t realized is the past is how, for more and more people, line dancing fits this requirement. Line dancing is a fun way to exercise and requires no special dance skills to participate. You don’t even need a dance partner to participate. You don’t even need a dance partner to partici-pate! As well, line dancing provides opportunities for camaraderie and so-cializing amongst its participants. Line dancing is an easy way to stay mentally and physically healthy and active while adding years to your life. Health benefits to line dancing include: Lowered blood pressure & choles-

terol levels Increased mobility (without risk of

joint damage.) Improved balance & coordination. Increased bone mass and muscle Assistance with weight control

Offsetting depression Increased lung capacity If you prefer something a bit calmer, consider trying a gentle yoga class. Gentle yoga offers the option of low-impact exercise, giving beginners an excellent way to stay active & lower stress levels. A low-impact workout also means you are less likely to get injured, making it a safe choice for older participants. Yoga has a number of benefits for people over 50. Gentle

stretching can go

a long way in helping you develop greater flexibility, a greater range of motion as you age, aids in preventing falls. The gentle twisting poses & stretches can be beneficial to those seeking pain relief from an existing bone condition. And can also be effective in preventing and slowing bone density loss. Gentle Yoga classes offer the opportu-nity to take some quiet time, help relieve stress, keep you centered, energized and aiding you to age gracefully. Consider trying a Gentle Yoga class to gain the following health benefits: Movement without strain Increased flexibility Improved bone health Mental clarity Gentle Yoga benefits people with move-ment limitations, profound stiffness due to lack of activity, relief from disabilities & chronic conditions such as arthritis, back pain, recovery from illness. It benefits par-ticipants seeking stress reduction or weight management.

We would like to thank JERRY PITTS and JOHN ABLETT for the

informative talk they gave on the issues around claiming a disability tax credit. Interest was evidenced by the good attendance and many questions. If you were not able to attend and would like information about the issues, please feel free to give Jerry or John a call.

Valentine Day Luncheon

Friends and family of Carol Deasey

gathered at the Centre recently to say

their farewell

to a very special friend

and volunteer. Thanks to

the board who prepared

a lovely lunch of sand-

wiches and fancy

squares which was en-

joyed by everyone. The

tables were beautifully set up, colour co-

ordinated with pretty primrose

table centres all matched with

tablecloths, thanks to Suz-

anne Adkins who put her tal-

ents to work. Paul Walkey

entertained with lovely dinner

music.

Carol is very sadly missed.

Just some of the folks who dropped in for lunch on

Valentine Day at Centre. Ham and potato scallop

with all the trimmings, including dessert, was very

much appreciated. Many thanks to the hard working

volunteers who prepared the delicious food. Once

again, we are so fortunate to have volunteers

willing to feed us, keep us busy with activi-

ties, and making it a perfect spot to drop in

for a beverage, maybe a goodie and visit

with good company! THANK YOU ALL!!

Maggie Coleman won the Valentine basket.

On February 16th we boarded the ETA bus and headed down Island to enjoy the Valentine show by the Palm Court Light Orchestra at the Duncan theatre. As usual, it was lovely. Featured was Sidney’s Tenor Sunny Shams and a friend Shandan Gaul Guerrero from Mexico who sang lovely love songs from operas and oper-ettas including La Boheme, Toska and Madam Butterfly in addition to the Merry Widow and The Student Prince. Also performed was music of Franz Lehar, Sigmund Romberg, Victor Herbert and Johann Strauss. The concert was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone and was ably organized by Sheila. Courtesy Doreen Porta

Our facilities: a quiet but sort of serious busi-ness as I found out af-ter starting the job with

an excellent introduction from Bob B. The first rule: be quiet about it, ar-range things so that no programs are disrupted and make sure that we have a good janitor! After that, it is simply a matter of keep-ing up with supplies such as paper tow-els, plastic bags, dishwasher fluids, toilet rolls (of course, the reality for run-ning out of these is so severe that no one would let that happen...even if it meant tearing up some old newspa-pers). Our chairs and tables are very vital to us, so must be treated with respect par-

ticularly when they are being stacked. Annual inspections, fire safety extin-guishers, heating system and electrics are carried out with excellent co-operation from local authorities and businesses. Of course, there’s always the unex-pected such as a busted water heater, but after one quick phone call by Judy, we were soon off and running again. So, I have to say that it is a job I enjoy doing and wish to thank the members of this great and friendly organization for your help. Please speak to myself or a board member if you have any concerns. Let us keep happy and proud of this great centre. Courtesy Roy Jones

This past month we lost a very dear long-time member. TILLY KOREMAN was one of our originals. She and her husband Bob, joined the Centre at its beginning in 1997. She served on the Board of Direc-tors as its secretary and for many years as its treasurer. We owe Tilly a great debt of gratitude for all she contributed in a very quiet and caring manner. She was, of course, a Life Member. In later days she enjoyed a good game of Mah Jong on a Friday afternoon.

In the kitchen on the wall we only had one phone, and no need for recording things, someone was al-ways home.

We only had a living room where we would congre-gate, unless it was at mealtime in the kitchen where we ate.

We only had one TV set and channels, maybe two. But always there was one of them with some-thing worth the view.

For snacks we had potato chips that tasted like a chip. And if you wanted flavour there was Lipton’s onion dip.

Weekends were for family trips or staying home to play. We did things to-gether—even go to church to pray.

There were the picnics at the peak of summer sea-son. Pack a lunch and find some trees, and never need a reason.

With all todays technol-ogy we grant that it’s a plus. It’s fun to look way back and say, hey look guys! THAT WAS US!

When we did our weekend trips, depending on the weather, no one stayed at home because we liked to be together.

Sometimes we would separate to do things on our own, but we knew where the others were without our own cell phone.

Then there were the movies with your favourite movie star, and nothing can compare to watching movies in your car.

Get a baseball game together with all the friends you know, have real action playing ball and no game video.

Remember when the doctor used to be the family friend, and didn’t need insurance or a lawyer to defend?

The way that he took care of you or what he had to do, be-cause he took an oath and strived to do the best for you.

Remember going to the store and shopping casually, and when you went to pay for it, you used your own money?

Nothing that you had to swipe or punch in some amount, re-member when the cashier really had to count?

A little house with three bed-rooms, one bath and the car on the street. A mower that you had to push to make the grass look neat.
