Bowthorpe EMP distribution metal oxide surge arrester

Sealing: All arrester cores are encapsulated in silicone insulatinghousing. A permanent chemical bond connects thearrester core and the non-tracking silicone housing. Thisinvisible interface prevents moisture from entering duringsevere thermal fluctuations due to normal climatic andenergy absorption events.

Polymer housing: Non-tracking and hydrophobic silicone insulating materialis used for DA arrester housings. The DA surge arresterseries is available with standard or extra creepage dis-tance. The housing material has proven performance inlong term TERT and UV aging tests and proven resistanceto flammability.

Integrated design: Manufacturing integrates all components in a single piece.There are no glued interfaces. The design is void and gapfree ensuring peak performance under the harshest conditions.

Reliable and consistent ELDOur robust earth lead disconnect, (ELD) offers operational reliability and consistency. It was designed to operate in event of arrester failure, removing earth connection and fault from line. It can be shipped andstored restriction free.

Safe mode of failure: Our high energy arresters are tested in accordance withthe pre-failing mode of failure test in IEC 60099-4, 2009. This testing has proven the DA0 surge arrester series safeand predictable failure characteristics.

Quality: The DA0 series arrester is manufactured to internationalquality standards in Tyco Electronics production facilities.We perform 100% routine testing on arresters:1) Visual inspection2) Reference voltage test3) Partial discharge test

Bowthorpe EMP DA silicone surgearresters have been designed andtested to meet our customersdemands with reliability and offeringimproved operational performance. The DA development was based on30 years of experience in arresterdesign and manufacture within theTyco Electronics Energy Division.

The DA0 series is qualified to the latest revision of IEC 60099-4, 2009and all our reports are independently certified.

DA0 series

Qualification testing: Decades of insulating materials, arrester design and development experience has been combined to create the DA series arrester. The basic construction comprisesof high energy ZnO varistors, assembled within a flameretarded composite laminate tube. The following IEC 60099-4 design type tests have been carried out on the DA series arresters:

1) Insulation withstand tests on the arrester housing2) Residual voltage tests3) Long-duration current impulse withstand test4) Operating duty tests5) Short-circuit tests6) Internal partial discharge tests7) Weather Ageing Test8) Power –frequency voltage versus time characteristics

The silicone insulating material has been designed andoptimised for arrester application. The following additionaltesting was performed in the qualification of the silicone: 1) Tracking and Erosion2) UV testing3) Thermal endurance4) Dielectric testing5) Flammability testing.6) Long term water immersion testing

Production and Quality: All our arrester production facilities have implemented QCand QA procedures according to international standardsto ensure test programs that guarantee quality conform-ing products. 100% of all Varistors are tested and stampedwith unique varistor residual and reference voltage. Thefollowing tests are performed on varistors:

1) Residual voltage2) Reference voltage3) Long duration current 4) Physical examination to screen damaged varistors5) LOT test: High current impulse test6) LOT test: Aging test

At the end of the arrester assembly process, the followingmandatory IEC tests are completed on every arrester:visual inspection, reference voltage test and PD testing.

Temperature of samples (pre-heated): 60° C according to IEC 60099-4,Ed 2.2 2009. TOV Curve applies to an arrester which has a pre-stress appliedprior to TOV verification. This pre-stress is equivalent to one high currentimpulse of 65kA, 4/10 as per the operating duty test.
