BOWMAN WOODS BULLETIN March 2017 Edition Dear Parents, Thank you for signing up and participating in our spring conferences this week. Conferences provide an excellent opportunity to hear about the many great things happening at school and to exchange information that will help make your child’s last trimester the most successful. Babysitting will be provided again on Thursday, March 2 nd in our gym from 4:00-7:30. High school students involved in SODA will be playing games with the students. Students may be dropped off at the gym during your conference time unless the teacher asked your child to attend his or her conference. The teachers enjoyed a delightful meal provided by parents last night. Thanks to all of you who helped with that. A special thank you to our hospitality chairs this year, Becky Decious and Carey Buresh. Thanks to all of the school volunteers who helped last month. We could not function without the many extra hands in the classroom, lunchroom, working with small groups of students or one-on-one, helping at the volunteer workshop, assisting with special events or field trips, or serving on our PTO. Thank you for continuing to record your volunteer hours. We know you do not volunteer for recognition, but it really helps our district to reflect the many hours our amazing volunteers are here making a difference for all students. We are currently leading the district in volunteer hours, but there are many buildings getting close to our numbers. Thank you for recording your hours! It truly is important. February was full of many wonderful activities including band, orchestra, and musical programs featuring our fifth graders. We capped the month off with our Sock Hop last Friday night. That was an evening of pure fun. Thank you for the parents who stayed with their children that night. It really makes a difference having you at these evening events as they are organized to be family events. A special thanks to our PTO and Sock Hop committee who made this a wonderful night for all. Please find their names on page three. Thank you for those of you who were able to send diapers and wipes as our February outreach. We will continue this outreach for March as well. It is a great need for local agencies. As always, thank you for sharing your delightful children with us. Sincerely, Tina and the Bowman Woods Staff

Spring Pictures – March 30th Our photographers will be here on March 30th to take casual/informal pictures

A few weeks after picture day, your student will bring home a picture packet

that includes pricing information. Simply send in the remittance for any

pictures you would like to keep and return the pictures you do not wish to

keep. Buy one, buy all of them, or return them and purchase none. The

choice is yours! This is an excellent fundraiser for Bowman Woods, but you

are under no obligation to purchase pictures.

Parents, please help by not dropping your child off at

Thank you for your cooperation on this safety

issue.

IF YOU HAVE NOT

REGISTERED YOUR

KINDERGARTNER

FOR SCHOOL NEXT

FALL, PLEASE CALL

447-3240.

ARRIVING LATE TO SCHOOL For the safety of the student, all students arriving after

8:30 AM, whether they are tardy or coming from an appointment, are required to be signed into school by an

adult.

Lost and Found is rapidly growing! Please come by the multi-

purpose room to check and see if anything belongs to your family!

Thank you.

Attention Active Volunteers - Take some of the stress off next August by being ahead of the game! Starting now, those that fill out the Volunteer Registration Renewal Form will become an ACTIVE volunteer for 2017-2018 school year. No need to do a volunteer orientation again if you've done it once! This will enable you to start the next school year with ease knowing you've already renewed your registration and will be on our email list for volunteer opportunities.

For those that would like to become active volunteers even though it's late in the school year - By filling out the New Volunteer Registration Form and meeting with Karla Terry for orientation, you will now become eligible for volunteering the rest of this school year AND next school year! The end of the year is always filled with great volunteer opportunities, and by becoming an active volunteer now, you will be able to know all the available opportunities.

If you would like to know more, please email us at [email protected].

Thanks!

Redemption News Keep those Box Tops and Hy-Vee receipts coming in! We have our first winner of the

redemption Pokémon race on the lunchroom bulletin board: 2nd grade Hatfield’s

class. At this time, 3rd grade Davidson’s class is not far behind in second place and

third place is a close race between several homerooms. The first three homerooms who

“catch” all the Pokémon on the board win a hot chocolate party at the time of their

teachers’ choosing. So don’t hold onto those redemption items—we don’t want a hot

chocolate party in May!

While we collect Box Tops and Hy-Vee receipts throughout the whole year including

summer, there are a couple important dates to keep in mind. Box Tops has two

submission dates in the school year in which all the Box Tops we have collected get

mailed in to General Mills. They then send our school a check for the amount

submitted; once in the fall and again in the spring. For the Box Tops to count yet for

this school year, the spring date submission is March 1st. Box Tops turned in after

March 1st will then be on the fall check for the 2017-18 school year. The Hy-Vee

receipt deadline for this school year is March 31st for all receipts dated May 1st, 2016

through March 31st, 2017. Receipts turned in after March 31st will then count toward

next school year. Every single Box Top and receipt helps provide money to our

school. Keep collecting, and if you are holding onto a bunch, please turn them in

ASAP!

As always, thanks for your support!.

Library Invite Parents are invited to the library during conference nights until 7 PM on February

28 and March 2 if you would just like to come look around, see our new Think Tank

Makerspace robots and games, or find out more about free Grant Wood AEA

Resources. Students are welcome to come and show their parents around, but

please do not send students to the library by themselves.

Our library picture books and non-fiction sections have undergone a bookstore type

transformation so that students can find books by topics rather than by Dewey

decimal system. Come see for yourself!

We have added several games and robots funded by the Linn-Mar Foundation, so

that students are able to do STEM rotations. Come play for yourself!

I can show you the free resources you and your students can use for ClipArt,

Music, eBooks, online encyclopedias and videos. Come learn for yourself!

I can show you programs your students might be using during library class on our

school Symbaloo! Come code, type, play, and learn for yourself!

See you there!

UPCOMING EVENT!

The Stories Alive Program is funding a district visit from author/illustrator Betsy

Lewin. She will be coming to Bowman Woods on April 20th to speak to students in

K-3rd grades. A book order form will be sent home soon to students in K-3 for

anyone wishing to buy a book and have Betsy autograph it while she is here. The

order form is due to the library by March 8.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
