From the Board

On behalf of the Club Board of Directors I would like to welcome everyone to Club Grandviews first edition of Bowls without Bias for 2017. We trust that everyone had a fantastic Festive Season and New Year and that your New Year resolutions are still going strong.

During the first few months of the new renovations being open we have experienced some minor problems/issues which the Board and Management have been constantly working on with the contracted builder to have resolved. These problems/issues should be completely resolved by the end of March.

At the start of February we held our Renovations Launch weekend, where we saw the band One Hit Wonders play to a large audience on the Saturday night which was great to see. On the Sunday we had the Family Fun Day with Barefoot Bowls, Face Painting & Tumbletown Kids play gym available all day and in the afternoon we had our very own local singer Georgina Dick performing her first ever live performance.

The Board hoped that all of the Members & Guests plus their families who turned up on the day enjoyed themselves.

The Club commenced Saturday Unplugged in March last year with a solo artists performing every Saturday night, which brought some atmosphere to the Club on a Saturday night. This year will see the entertainment move in a new direction on Saturday nights with Solo artists, Trio's & Big Bands similar to One Hit Wonders and Endless Summer Beach party which have performed recently at the Club.

We look forward to seeing you at some of the upcoming Saturday Night performances.

The 2017 State Mens Pennants started on 4 March. Grandviews is represented in 7 Grades. This shows that the Mens Bowling Club is only getting stronger with our Bowls Manager Cameron Curtis at the helm. The Women's Pennants commenced on 7 March with teams playing in Grades 3 &4. GOOD LUCK to all players and teams in this year's Pennants and

let's bring home some Zone/District Flags. GO THE GATORS.

As we head towards Easter in Mid-April. The Board and I would like to wish everyone a very safe and HAPPY EASTER. If you are travelling over the Easter period to visit family & friends please travel safe over this holiday period.

Our annual ANZAC Day Commemoration Service will be held on Tuesday 25th April 2017 at 10am at the Clubs Cenotaph.

Finally on Saturday 25th February the Club farewelled a LEGEND of Club Grandviews – David Hurst. David and his wife are moving to the Mid North Coast to start the next adventure in their life. We wish them all the best for the future and hope to see David back for some social games of bowls soon.

Men’s Bowling Club President’s ReportHello bowlers and welcome to a new year,

2017. The years seem to be going quicker and

quicker.

Club championships have kicked off and,

apart from some interruptions by the weather,

the games are progressing smoothly.

The pennant season has just commenced and

this year we will be fielding seven sides plus

two teams in the Pennant Cup. I am confident

we will have a successful season and even go

one better than last year and bring home a

State flag.

Our greens continue to be the envy of the

district and congratulations to Phil, Matt and

Nick who continue to maintain our greens at

the highest level possible.

Bowlers, don't forget our Turn the Joker

promotion continues on Thursday nights with

all proceeds going to the Men's Bowling Club.

Please give it your support. At the time of

writing, the jackpot stands at $9,250.

May I wish everyone good bowling and I hope

you all have an excellent year.

Women’s Bowling Club President’s ReportOur Bowling Program for 2107 is very full with two of our Club championships and one State event at District level already completed, albeit in very challenging weather conditions. Congratulations to the winners. Thanks to our umpires and controlling bodies who have been kept busy.

For the next two months we are competing for District Pennant flags. At the time of writing we have completed all games despite heavy downpours interrupting play. Immediately after Pennants the State events resume and take us through to winter. Grandviews will be hosting the State Pairs, on behalf of the District, commencing 29 May.

In addition to these competition events our social bowls continue to be well patronised on Tuesdays. Thanks to the Men's Bowling Club including us on Mondays and Saturdays. Also

to Phil for meeting all our requests for green space.

Whether it is coincidental or not the change in personnel in Women's Bowls NSW had seen a number of corporate governance initiatives including a revised Constitution and By-law for Clubs and a Code of Conduct for players and a Code of Ethics for Management committee members. In our attempts to implement these changes I hope we have time for bowls!

Women's Bowling Club Publicity ReportWell 2017 has proved very difficult for us with the weather conditions. The introduction of the weather graph has been initiated. We have to use common sense when appropriate. We first had the heat and humidity and then the rains came.

We must look after our bowlers. We have had many bowlers on the sick list. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

The ladies have been very thankful to the men who have helped out with coaching. To John Smedley, Cameron Curtis, Terry Payne and Terry Broderick a big thank you. Great to see the men and women working well together. All of our ladies are welcome to attend these sessions. Remember that you never stop learning.

Our club championships have commenced.

Ÿ The final of the Club Fours was won by Pam Robinson, Mary Teasdale, Kris Payne and Janice Shaw.

Ÿ The Major singles was played between Kris Payne and Ruku Rao with Kris the eventual winner.

Ÿ The District Seniors Fours was won by our team of Dawn McGuinness, Vonnie Hill, Kerrie Boughen and Beth Bray. They have progressed to the Region play-offs to be held in July.

Pennants commenced this week with our teams in the 3s and 4s. Good luck to all the

players. Great to have non playing managers, thanks Inez and Sheila. Social Bowls are still being played each Tuesday. It is lovely to see all the support from our non playing bowlers.

Well we all seem to have settled into our newly renovated club house. What a difference from the old place, thank you for your patience during the renovations. Now we need to continue to support this wonderful club. Something here for everyone.

We are in the process of planning for our Charity Day on May 15th. Our charity this year is DIGNITY a newly established charity that provides support for people in crisis and at risk of or experiencing homelessness by providing food, shelter, clothing, advocacy and education. Donations for this day will be greatfully received.

Our thanks to our Greenkeepers for the wonderful way they have presented our green and who are always so obliging. It is great to hear the comments from our visitors about our greens.

Stay well,

Toni Plunkett- Publicity Officer.

It has been generally a very positive start to the 2017 pennant season. Led by the success of Grades 2, 3 and 4 each having two wins from the first two rounds. It's terrific to be out of the 'blocks' early with the points on the board.

It just goes to show how much we have strengthend up, particularly in grades 3 and 4. The compatibility seems to be top notch and the enjoyment and club morale second to none.

The 1s have started solidly with a big come from behind victory away against Alexandria-Erskineville on that first rainy Saturday. Paul Rowe accepted the challenge to take my spot and skip the rink when I was crook.

Down about 1-9 to the wily, Bernie Melville, his quartet of Mick Rowe, Jay Short and Jason Douglas (Tamworth) ended up having a massive 25 shot victory to carry the big board with the other two rinks going down on the last end.

Last Friday night the 1s lost by four shots to Taren Point under lights, but get a second chance when they play them again on Friday

17th March. They then back up against South Coogee the next day in what will be a must win game at home.

The 6s have had a bye in the first round and a big win against Coogee, so are going well. Their next game is against Hillsdale away, which will be a tough test on the heavy greens there.

The 5s and 7s are dragging the chain with two losses each. The season is very much on the line and they will need at least one win each over the next two rounds.

Most of the sections take the top two sides, so there is always chances right to the end to grab a playoff spot.

FOURS PLAY TACTICS& DECISION MAKING

One thing that Billy Pearson has noticed a fair bit with the lower grade skips, is their propensity to attack the oppositions shot bowl, when they are only one down and nothing else much close in the head.

This is a recipe for disaster and certainly not good skipping at all, especially when playing to a big board. That's where the term 'building the head' comes from. Just because the opposition lead or second have 'bunged' one on the jack, unless the master board is all square, last end, one down is not always a bad thing.

Get one or preferably two good second woods, then you can start to attack the shot bowl, without fear of dropping a huge count if you

miss. The problem when you have only one second or worse, nothing else within the 'yard' stick, is that if you keep missing, the opposition can sit you out with his last bowl for a big count of five down or even worse.

Generally, keep your second and/or third mainly on the draw until you have a couple of good ones in the head, then once you have ticked that box, then you can start plotting more attacking ways of getting shot with very little or reduced risk of dropping more shots.

Other general information for the leads and seconds. Remember the KISS principle – Keep it simple. Draw shots inside the yard stick or 80cm like we have in the mat & jack box are the key. The thirds and skips cannot do it on their own and particularly without having good close bowls in the head and near the jack most ends. You can do it on social days, so DO it on pennant days.

Nothing wrong with playing a bad bowl, as long as your next one is better. Good correction is the name of this game.

Focus in the trial ends and the first few ends on

7

getting the correct grass and obtaining good rhythm. You won't play good weight, without having consistently good grass.

More so for grades 1-3, you have to be dialled in and ready to go from bowl #1, end #1. You can't afford to be rusty for 6-8 ends and ease your way into it. Against a top side, the game will be over!

LEADS

Ÿ Ideally, one inside a mat length and one past jack high (ideally in the 6” to 1 metre past the jack range is great).

Ÿ Never, two short bowls (short is anything more than three feet, less the higher up the grades you go).Must play accurate grass line as much as possible. Find the kindest side of the rink early on.

Ÿ Must be able to roll the jack to certain lengths accurately and liaise with the skip as to the best length for the team.

SECONDS

Ÿ Must play their best bowls when the lead fails with both their bowls

Ÿ If down, get second shot or least improve the head for the third to have some positive impact

Ÿ Must NOT have two short bowls (short bowl is defined above)

Ÿ If team is holding, must regularly add counters to up the pressure on the opposition

Ÿ Must get past the jack with at least one of his bowls if the leads has two bowls short of jack high

Must be good at the little 18” – 2ft conversion shots to be able to change the head up if it looks too inviting for the opposition

WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF WET WEATHER AND UNCERTAINTY

It was extremely disappointing that our 7s had to play one man short in round one after one of the players never fronted after some confusion as to whether bowls was on or off.

Don't ask me how eleven others could be there and not the 12th player, but suffice to say it's prudent that we review what should happen in the event of wet weather.

1. Zone 13 clubs are instructed not to make a decision before 11am generally unless it's cyclonic. Therefore, by the time a club makes a call and relays that decision, it's usually close to 11.15am.

2. Players should understand they should ring their Skips before the time to be at club. Don't ring the opposition club, as you will more than likely either call the wrong club or get the bar person who has no idea.

3. If any doubt, the skips should check with the side manager and the managers should be in touch with our bowls office checking status of game venues after 11am. This way the Bowls Office only has to deal with seven Managers…the Manager can deal with three Skips and the Skips can deal with their other three team members. Simple stuff really!!!

4. During daylight saving, clubs can delay the start of play until 2.30pm. So, in some cases, you just may need to go to the venue and wait it out.

NEW CONDITIONS OF PLAY FOR MEN'S PENNANTS & BOWLS NSW EVENTS

Please make yourself aware of these new Conditions of Play. The crux of the change means now, that the THIRD cannot be called up from the mat end to inspect the head.

However, the THIRD, may start each new end standing up with the Skip. He can stay there until it is his turn to play. He then cannot go to the head until he has played his second bowl.

The lead, second and third can all chase their second bowl as long as they are behind the jack when their bowls comes to rest.

2.29. Restricting Movement of Players

After delivering their first bowl, players will only be allowed to walk up to the head under the following circumstances:

2.29.1. Singles Game

After delivery of their third and fourth bowls

2.29.2. Pairs game

2.29.2.1. Leads: After delivery of their second and fourth bowls

2.29.2.2. Skips: after delivery of their second, third and fourth bowls

2.29.3. Triples Game (2 bowls)

2.29.3.1. Leads: after delivery of their second bowl

2.29.3.2. Seconds: after delivery of their second bowl

2.29.3.3. Skips: After delivery of each of their bowls

2.29.4. Fours Game

2.29.4.1. Leads: after delivery of their second bowl

2.29.4.2. Seconds: after delivery of their second bowl

2.29.4.3. Thirds: after delivery of their second bowl. The third for each team may stand at the head end until it is their turn to play.

2.29.4.4. Skips After delivery of each of their bowls

2.29.5. Players remaining at head end

When a player at the head walks up to the mat to deliver their first bowl, their direct opponent can remain at the head until that bowl has come to rest before walking up to the mat to deliver their first bowl.

2.29.6. Penalty

See also Law 13, Possession of the Rink

i. (i.) On the first occasion the umpire shall warn the player concerned. The skip of the team and manager/Coach in a sides game shall also be advised of the warning.

ii. (ii.) On the second occasion the end in progress shall be declared completed and the opponents awarded the number of shots the same as the number of bowls in use in that game.

iii. (iii.) On the third occasion the match shall be forfeited to the opponents.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017

Adverse weather has played some havoc already with our Championship calendar. Not to be deterred though, Major Pairs matches will continue as normal am & pm from the next available Sunday.

The second club fours semi-final between Glen Hillen's team and Cam Curtis' team will take

place this Sunday 19th March at 9.30am. The winner will take on Arthur Talbot's side the following Sunday all being well.

Nominations for many of the other Championships are on the notice board now, stapled together to save space. In the Major Singles this year, it is open to all players. With the Over 60s Senior Singles and Veteran's Singles, eligible members may play in either one, but NOT both.

CHALLENGE MATCH VS CITY TATTS

In mid-November, we had a visit from Ralph Johns' City Tatts group. It was our annual challenge and this year it proved to be a big victory to the Grandviews Gator boys who have now earned themselves a rematch against City Tatts at Greenlees Park BC in February.

The big victory earned us the right to the $1000 winner take all finals challenge to be played on Tuesday 21st February. Each side had ten teams of triples and would you believe that the games were split, five wins each and once the aggregate scores were tallied up, it was 216 shots apiece (a DRAW).

Prize money was split evenly and the Grandviews Men's Bowling Club donated those funds for a dry till for the David Hurst send-off night on Friday 25th February. It was a hugely successful night attended by many that knew David well and many that did not, but just wanted to enjoy the pre-pennant season get together, the great food, top entertainment and great friendship.

The Moon Report John Moon - Social Director

John Moon (The Tune Tycoon)

Stage 1 of our renovations is just about finished. We have had a few hiccups with the air conditioning leaking water and blackouts, but they are b e i n g i r o n e d o u t . M o s t members are very pleased with the result. The turnover has

gone up and we have a lot more space to put on special events.

*****************The Grandviews Mens Probus Club was founded 26 years ago and meets the first Tuesday of every month in the downstairs function room at 9am. We have a few vacancies at the moment so if you would like to attend as a visitor just turn up and someone will show you the ropes. To join the club you have to be a member of Club Grandviews, be a retiree and be male. The ladies have their own club.

******************Another club within the club is the Finess Bridge Club. If you can't play they will teach you. Contact Greg Eustace for details on a Friday afternoon or evening.

Fran get well soon. Lindsay and I want to have another long lunch with you.

Ÿ Who was the prominent member who played recently down the coast on one of those hot days before all the rain putting on the sun screen he thought was a bit tacky? Grippo can certainly give a MARSHmallow complexion.

Ÿ Congratulations to two old stagers of the Club on reaching 90 years. Harry Giltinan has already celebrated his and Lenny Smith still has a few weeks to go. I think he'll make it.

Ÿ Well done to Bicko, Big Kev & Sluggo on winning the final of the RSL Triples Division 1. They have earnt the right to play the winners of a south of the State team to be played in the beautiful Shoalhaven. Sluggo is interviewing would-be mangers now. I believe the incumbent, Bob Gray, has the inside running.

Ÿ Those who attended Hursty's send off really enjoyed a great night. David & Annie are retiring to Blackhead, north of Forster. I'm told the 'Bowlo' there is very exciting.

Ÿ Paul Rowe was a late replacement for an ailing Cameron Curtis in the first round of the No 1 Pennants against Alexandria-Erskineville. The runaway win of his rink 32-8 sealed Alex's fate. Opposite skip, Bernie Melville, must still be having nightmares. Does this mean Cam may have to settle for skip in the No 2s?

Ÿ With the start of the football season Grandviews Footy Tipping completion has almost 90 starters. Don't forget to have fill your card before Thursday night kick off. Can't wait until the end of year celebrations!

Ÿ Bowlers - is six months' notice enough to lock in Sunday September 10 for Frannies Day? Once again Kelly English and her team will be organising a fun bowls day in aid of the McGrath Foundation. More details to be provided closer to the day.

Ÿ Pennants are now into Round 3. There will be quite a few slow greens to contend with, so make sure to be conscious of reaching the head and remember if you're down make sure you're up

AN IRISHMAN'S ACCOUNT OF HIS FIRST DRINK WITH HIS SON.I was reading an article about fathers and sons and memories came flooding back about the time I took my son out for his first drink. Off we went to our local bar which is only two blocks from the house.I got him a Guinness Stout. He didn't like it so I drank it. Then I got him an Old Style. He didn't like that either so I drank it. It was the same with the Pale Ale and the Pilsener. By the time we got down to the Old Bushmills Irish whiskey I could hardly push the stroller back home

Coaching TipsHead-Building Principles

SKIPPERS

In building a head and most bowls games the skipper have control. Very good team play and cohesion can be achieved if the all team players have confidence in and understand the purposes of the shots called.

SHOT SELECTION

In most situations in bowls there is always more than one way to achieve a result. Shot selection depends on the skipper's assessment of his players ability, conditions, score, and risk involved. The opponents capabilities must be taken into account and generally expect that their next attempt will be successful.

BASIC STRATEGY

Ÿ Play the easiest hand to draw bowls into the head.

Ÿ Obtain a good 2nd shot. Your team is then only one shot down or holds 2 shots and also has two bowls in the head

Ÿ Try not to lose your bowl or be short and block the head.

Ÿ Be up when you are down, in particular the Second and Third players.

Ÿ Make every bowl useful. i.e. bowls in the head.

Ÿ Play with weight that allows your bowl to finish in a useful position if you miss your objective.

Ÿ Play the shot that gives you the most chances for success, rather than the perfect draw on the open hand.

Ÿ Play your opponents hand draw onto and use their bowls.

Ÿ Try to beat your opponents best or second best bowl. Progressively moving their second best bowl out of the head can create opportunities. If they have a very good shot (one that's hard to beat) create a situation so that it is then worth the risk in attempting to remove the bowl.

Ÿ Increase the pressure on your opponents and don't expect to hold easy/ vulnerable shots.

Ÿ Decrease your opponents potential success by covering bowls, blocking, playing their hand, draw another without increasing the target,

Ÿ Avoid building a target when holding.

Ÿ Create a target when down by drawing close.

Ÿ Have 2 or more bowls in the head. Be aware that they might both bowls may be hit out with a weighted shot from either team.

Ÿ Be happy with a score on an end and don't be too greedy. Many games are won or lost by a few shots. These may be the shots you lose if you give the shot away when holding ,e.g. +1 shot to -1 shot is worth 2 shots to the opposition.

Ÿ Be careful in placing all your bowls on one side of the head. An unexpected result or a good shot by the opposition will be costly.

Ÿ Drive with a purpose, not in desperation. Check the head before driving and attack easy targets.

Ÿ Consider the value of draw/drive when in trouble, rather than drive/drive or drive/draw. Create a target with a close “aggressive draw”. If you attack the head without a close bowl and miss, your opponent will almost certainly add another.

Ÿ 2 down is bad but not as bad as 4 down!!!

DID YOU KNOW?Many words now familiar to us were

adapted by the British from Indian usage,

including - shampoo, veranda, pyjamas,

khaki, pariah, bangle, thug, loot, polo,

bungalow and indigo.

ParaprosdokiansThe first time I heard about paraprosdokians, I liked them. Paraprosdokians are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and is frequently humorous. (Winston Churchill loved them.)

1. Where there's a will, I want to be in it.

2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you.... but it's still on my list.

3. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Golf NewsOur golfers think they're a pretty tough lot. but how do they compare with members of the English Richmond G.C. Now these are real die hard golfers! The notice below was posted, adjusting rules at a golf club in Britain in 1940.German aircraft from Norway would fly on missions to attack northern England. Because of the icy weather conditions, the barrels of their guns had a small dab of wax in the muzzle to protect them from clogging with ice. In addition to attacking industrial or other targets close to golf courses, as they crossed the coast, they would clear their guns by firing a few rounds at the golf courses. Golfers were urged to take cover.
