WelcomeWelcome to the Fall 2015 issue of BMAC’s Newsletter. Our theme is Fall Fun with BMAC. It’s been a busy and fun season for BMAC and we want you to have fun as you read through the newsletter. I’m sure you’ll see something that will make you smile, laugh, and touch your heart.

As we begin 2016, we have more excitement and fun to experience and I hope you will join us to be a part of this special group of people. The CIAA basketball tournament in Charlotte, NC, is right around the corner and occurs February 22 - 27. The annual BMAC March Madness get together is coming. Plus, we’re gearing up to plan for the 2016 Bike Tour and there will be other fun activities throughout the year.

A few weeks ago, you should have received a reminder email to renew your membership dues. If you haven’t already done so, please go online – www.bmacbulldogs.com - to make your payment or you can mail a check payable to BMAC to P.O. Box 96, Bowie, MD 20719-0096. Even if you’re unable to participate in all of the events or attend chapter meetings, it is important that your name remains on the membership roster. By simply paying your dues, you’re making a difference and contributing to the success of BMAC. Plus, we should stay connected because we’re more than a chapter, we are family.

You can also stay informed by visiting our website www.bmacbulldogs.com and our Facebook page. Our meeting announcements are always published on-line and you might even see a photo of yourself or someone you haven’t seen in a while from BSU.

In closing, I hope you had a nice holiday season and I wish you a blessed and prosperous 2016. See you soon.

This Fall BMAC has had tons of fun and laughter with all of our activities and events. We launched our Fall season on September 12th with the Sesquicentennial Inaugural BSU Bike Tour. It was a blast! Check out the article to read all about it. I’m sure you’ll smile, giggle, and LOL. Then we celebrated Homecoming and with it being BSU’s 150th anniversary it was sure to please.

BMAC was represented at homecoming events including the Scholarship Gala, the Parade, the Game (which we WON! Go

Bulldogs), and the Reunion Alumni Gospel Choir Concert. You can read all about the fun festivities in the Homecoming article. I know you’ll smile about our member spotlight which features Dr. Petrina Shatteen. Enjoy learning more about her.

We also awarded scholarships during the fall semester and you can learn more about the recipients in this issue. We attended the CIAA championship football game and held our annual holiday potluck meeting/celebration. We’ve attended church services as part of the campaign for “Let the Sesquicentennial Ring.” And we attended the final Sesquicentennial event – the Alumni Cruise in Baltimore. We’ve been really busy these past few months and it has been nothing but fun, laughter, and smiles. What a JOY!

The 2015 Bowie State University Homecoming was extra special this year because of the yearlong observance of Bowie’s 150th anniversary. To honor Bowie’s 150-year history, this year’s homecoming schedule reflected the theme “THE DYNASTY,” recognizing the university’s legacy of creating a dynasty of leaders impacting the world around them. There was a full schedule of events for students, alumni and friends. BMAC members were in attendance at the

following events:

October 9th

The 26th Annual BSU National Alumni Association Scholarship Gala – held at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD., celebrated BSU Legacy Promise Keepers. Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, Eric Roberson performed at the event.

70s/80s Group Reunion – was held at the Hampton Conference Center in Capitol Heights, MD, where alumni and friends reconnected and relived wonderful memories of their time at Bowie as well as brought each other up on what is currently happening in their lives today.

October 10th

The Legacy Parade - The parade route began at Ruby Tuesday’s on Excalibur Rd in Bowie and ended at Macy’s in the Bowie Town Center. The parade featuring the Symphony of Soul marching band and the Golden Girls cheerleaders led the parade, followed by festive university floats and community groups. Featured this year was The Golden Legacy (150th Year) Celebration float. Also as a special treat, several cyclists from Getting It In (GII) and Phase Cycling teams, who participated in BSU’s Inaugural Bike Tour, rode their bikes in the parade.

Bulldog Fest – held on the McKeldin Gymnasium Lawn featured a Grand Reunion Tent for Alumni, and music, food and fun activities for the entire family. Homecoming Game – The Mighty Bulldogs football team defeated the Hawks of Chowan University 17-14. GO BULLDOGS!!!

Bulldog Nation 5th Quarter – held in the Student Center, Wiseman Ballroom. Alumni of diverse ages celebrated the homecoming victory over food, drinks, music and dancing.

October 11th

Alumni Jazz Brunch & Reunion Gospel - held in Martin Luther King Jr. Communication Arts Center. Faculty, students, alumni and friends enjoyed a live jazz band over a tasty brunch followed by a Reunion Gospel Concert. In celebration of BSU’s 150th anniversary, alumni of Bowie State Gospel Choir came together to perform a special reunion concert. The mass choir featured 150 voices and sang songs in honor of their past choir directors. Five members of BMAC are also members of the Reunion choir. The concert was awesome and a perfect culmination to the 2015 homecoming celebration.

Mr. Jackson is described by many as a very well-rounded individual who loves music. At one time, he owned a studio in the area where he offered rehearsal and recording space for teens and adults who enjoyed creating lyrics for “Rap” and “Go-Go” music. Jermaine

also managed a band called “Main Reaction” for a season as well. On Saturday, September 12th, 2015 the Bowie Metropolitan Alumni Chapter (BMAC) made history by hosting the first ever bike tour for Bowie State University (BSU). The inaugural BSU Bike Tour was one of the events to celebrate Bowie State University’s sesquicentennial – 150 years of providing stellar education to hundreds of thousands of students. Not only was the bike tour the first ever for BSU, but also for ANY HBCU! What a proud moment for BMAC and our alma mater. The purpose of the tour was to raise scholarship funds for deserving students at Bowie State University and to support two charitable organizations, The SEED and Wounded Warriors. The event was a huge success with nearly 250 registrants participating in the tour and over 100

volunteers to support it.

Why was the event a big success?

An event of such magnitude with amazing results required months of planning, dedicated leadership, strategic partnerships, and support from a multitude of volunteers.

The event was co-chaired by three remarkable individuals – Colonel Eddie DeShields, Jr., Dr. Petrina Shatteen, and Sam White. It was a team effort. Colonel DeShields, was the initial chairman, had the concept and teamed-up with Dr. Shatteen to develop the vision. Dr. Shatteen enlisted her HRD students to begin project planning for the event. Dr. Shatteen is a member of the cycling group GII (Getting It In Cycling) and she reached out to them and PHASE Cycling for a partnership to leverage their expertise for a bike tour. GII and PHASE Cycling members include BSU Alumni and they generously offered their support. Their contribution was significant. Because of their expertise, it was polished and professional with every attribute that any experienced bike tour cyclist would expect.

About mid-way through the planning process, Colonel DeShields, was deployed to Afghanistan but BMAC decided to press forward and continue with the tour. This is when we were blessed with our two co-chairs – Sam White and Dr. Petrina Shatteen. They stepped in to bring the event to full fruition. They were amazing and words cannot express the significance of their hard work and determination to bring the tour to another level and make it a reality. Sam did a lot of the leg work to manage the various committees and to keep us focused on our tasks. He interfaced with the county to obtain permits and permission for the event. Dr. Shatteen was our bike tour guru and the key link to every aspect of the

tour. She exhausted every skill and ounce of energy she had to make it a success. She even recruited her husband, son and bike tour colleagues to carry out critical assignments for the tour.

The Day of the Event

Before the crack of dawn at 5:00 a.m., BMAC, GII Cycling, PHASE Cycling, and a multitude of student and alumni volunteers reported to BSU’s campus to set up for the tour. Registration opened at 6:00 a.m. and by then the campus was pulsing with cyclists ready to ride. You could feel the excitement in the air. It was electric. Our beautiful campus was flooded with cyclists and their professional bikes and you could see the BSU Bike Tour t-shirt all over campus. A beautiful sight!

To kick-off the tour, we began with an opening ceremony. Acknowledgements were made for every entity that supported the event including our sponsors – Giant Food, Wegmans, Bike Doctor, BSUNAA, ABM bottled water company, BSU’s Office of Alumni Relations, the BSU Sesquicentennial Committee, 2014 – 2015 Human Resource Development Project Management Classes housed within the Masters of Human Resource Development Program, GII, and PHASE Cycling. Their generosity helped to make the event possible and we are deeply appreciative for their contributions. We heard remarks from BSU’s Athletic Director, Clyde Doughty, Rosalind Muchiri, Director, BSU Office of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations, Dr. John Word, President, BSUNAA, Cindy Jackson, President, BMAC, and Richard Lucas, III, President, BSU SGA. To close the ceremony, safety instructions were delivered by Lloyd Mason, a member of GII. And, finally the ride began.

The tour started with a silent rider to commemorate the memory of the late Dr. Freddie Vaughns who passed away on the Fourth of July. Our silent rider was Kim Mason, member of GII and BSU alumnae. Following the silent rider, the tour registrants were released – the 20, 46, and 65 milers were off to a great start with a host of volunteers and BSU cheerleaders flanking the start line, cheering them on!!

All along the three routes, rest stops were outfitted with water, Gatorade, bananas, power bars, chips, and PB&J Crustibles to refresh the riders and the volunteers who were manning the rest stops greeted them as they arrived. The SAG (Support and Gear) was on alert throughout the event to assist any riders in need. The command center, led by Dr. Shatteen, was setup at the Student Center to communicate with the SAG and to get status reports on the condition of the riders. SAG support was provided by GII.

As the riders approached the end of the course, a host of volunteers were lined up all along Jericho Park Road to cheer them on to the finish line. What a day! The riders even rode in inclement weather. Even though the tour had to be cut short due to the heavy rainfall, everyone expressed the fun they had and how they can’t wait for next year’s ride scheduled for September 10, 2016. The event ended with a nutritious and delicious lunch for all of the riders in the BSU Student Center’s cafeteria. Everyone was able to fellowship, take photos and talk about their wonderful experience during the ride.

Congratulations BMAC and BSU and a million thanks to everyone who contributed to this worthwhile, historic, and thrilling event.

During the holiday season, BMAC distributed proceeds from the Bike Tour to the BSU Foundation for scholarships and two charitable organizations, The SEED and Wounded Warriors.

On December 3rd, a check was presented to the BSU Foundation at the BSU Alumni Cruise in Baltimore. BMAC was represented by President, Cindy Jackson and Correspondence Secretary, Dr. Shirelle Briscoe. The cruise was the last major event for BSU’s Sesquicentennial celebration. It was a great way to close out our 150th anniversary. We had a lot of fun. Congratulations BSU!

The SEED was able to purchase Christmas toys for children of low income families and distributed over 175 gift bags. BMAC’s President, Cindy Jackson, visited The SEED while the toys were being distributed. She stated, “It was a very proud moment for BMAC. I’m so pleased that we were a blessing to the community in this way.”

During the visit, Cindy was introduced to the founder of the SEED, Rev. James Jordan, one of the board members, and she was able to spend time with the Executive Director, Lisa Butler-McDougal and some of the staff.

Thank you BMAC for your wonderful contribution to the community.
