Bowel Interest Group Cost of Constipation Report2020

The Bowel Interest Group (BIG) in July 2020 have produced yet another illuminatingdocument for the cost of constipation There certainly seems to be evidence that theproblem is escalating with costs increasing year on year and the report undoubtedlyhighlighting how constipation continues to burden and deplete the NHS financiallyFor more than 20 years I have had first-hand experience within the field of boweldysfunction and appreciate the incredible services that are out there and providingtreatments that can only be classed as exceptional However I see no real signs ofa national effort to seek a solution to this important issue This could not be a bettertime to all work together by proffering ideas that can help to improve the currentsituation and reduce the ever-increasing costs of constipation to the NHS I wouldlove to hear about any local initiatives you may have Let us work with you to seehow we can take this forwardI will leave you with one last statement from BIG that really captured my attentionldquopound168m was spent by NHS England on treating constipation in 2018-19 This isequivalent to the cost of funding 7304 newly qualified nurses for a yearrdquo
