ANNOUNCEMENT.

The Medical School of Maine, by an Act of the Legislature, is placed

under the superintendence and direction of the Board of Trustees and Over-

seers of Bowdoin College. By their joint authority all the degrees of M.

D. are conferred.

The 66th Course of Lectures will begin February 4th, 1886, and con-

tinue twenty weeks ending June 24. The introductory lecture will be deliv-

ered at 3 o'clock P. M., by Prof. Stephen H. Weeks.

Especial attention is called to the lengthening of the term, also to the

important announcement that Dr. Albion G. Young, Secretary of Maine

State Board of Health, will, during the coming session, give a short course

of Lectures upon Public Hygiene.

MEANS OF INSTRUCTION.

The specimens of Normal, Morbid and Comparative Anatomy are an-

nually increased in number. The Museum has lately been thoroughly re-

arranged and enriched by purchases abroad.

The Chemical Department embraces every article of apparatus essential

to a complete illustration of the principles of Chemistry.

A new laboratory has recently been furnished for special courses in

analytical chemistry, urinary analysis and toxocology. These courses are

strongly recommended to every student. They will be entered upon im-

mediately after the closing of work in the dissecting room.

The lectures in Physiology are illustrated by Auzoux models and by

experiments.

Instruction in Normal and Pathological Histology is afforded without ex-

tra charge. A short course of Lectures upon Microscopy will be given by

the Demonstrator of Histology. Students owning Microscopes are re-

quested to bring them for use in their classes.

Students are advised to prepare tor their Anatomical and Physiological

studies by the dissection of the cat, dog, rabbit and frog, using Wilder &

Gage's Anatomical Technology, Foster & Langley's Practical Physiology,

oi- Huxley & Martin's Biology. Abundant Dissecting Material Ls furnished

at cost.

CLINICS.

Medical and Surgical Clinics will be held every Saturday Morning dur-

ing the last half of the term, beginning at nine o'clock and closing at half

past eleven.

All examinations in thepresence of the Class are made without charge. All

surgical operations are gratuitously performed.

TERMS OF ADMISSION.

Candidates for Matriculation will be required to give evidence that they

possess a good English education. Those who are graduates of Colleges,

Normal Schools, High Schools, or have passed the entrance examination

to any recognized College, on presentation of their diplomas or matricula-

tion tickets, will be exempt from examination. Examinations will be held

on Thursday, February 4th, at 9 o'clock, A. M.

The Fee for admission to the several Courses of Lectures, payable

strictly in advance, and by cash only, is $78. Matriculation Fee, payable

each term, $5.

Pupils who have attended two full courses of Medical Lectures, one of

which has been in this School, are admitted to all subsequent courses with-

out payment of any Lecture Fees.

Students who have attended two full courses at other regular Medical In-

stitutions, are required to pay $25 for admission to their first course of

Lectures at this School, in addition ta the Matriculation Fee.

The Graduation Fee, (which is not returnable), including the Diploma,

is $25. Fee for Analytical Chemistry, $10.

No student will be allowed to attend any Course of Lectures in this School,

without the certificate of the Secretary. Members of the Medical Profession

are cordially invited to attend the Lectures at any time.

Graduates of other Schools, who have been engaged three 3-ears in the

regular practice of medicine, may receive a general ticket upon presenta-

tion of their diplomas and payment of the Matriculation Fee. Students

are expected to remain till the close of the term.

EXAMINATIONS AND GRADUATION.f

Students and particularly candidates for graduation will be examined at

least twice each week in each department by its Professor.

The Faculty, believing it to be desirable for students to pay especial-

attention to the primary branches during the first portion of their course ofstudy, in order that they may be better prepared to appreciate the moreadvanced subjects in the latter part, voted nine years ago, that any studentmight present himself for examination in Anatomy, Physiology and Chem-istry (any or all), at the regularly appointed time for examination, providedhe previously presented to the Secretary satisfactory evidence that, at the.

close of the current term, he had completed at least twelve months of

actual study, and had attended a full course of lectures in this School.

Those who are examined in Anatomy are required to present evidence that

they have under competent instructors dissected not less than two parts.

The same requirements will be enforced in the cases of those who are ex-amined in this department at graduation. Five years ago they voted ad-

ditionally that any student may present himself for final examination in

Materia Medicaand Therapeutics, and in Obstetrics, at the regularly appoint-

ed time for examination, providing he previously presents to the Secretary

satisfactory evidence that, at the close of the current term, he shall have-

completed at least two years of actual study and have attended two courses

of Lectures, the second of which must have been in this School. An offi-

cial record of the result of the successful examinations shall be kept bythe Secretary. The successful passage of an examination will not exempt

a student from faithful attendance upon any exercises in any department

during subsequent courses.

The examinations for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine are held by their

Faculty of Medicine at the close of the course of Lectures. Degrees are con-

ferred.

The candidates must be twenty-one years of age, and must have de-

voted three years to their professional studies under the direction of a reg-

ular Practitioner of Medicine. They must have attended two full courses

of Lectures in some regular, incorporated Medical Institution ; and the last

course previous to examination must have been at this School, and fifteen,

months time must elapse between the beginning of a Student's first course

of lectures and his graduation. They must deposit with the Secretary of

the Faculty satisfactory certificates of good moral character, and of having

pursued their medical studies for the required term. They must also pass ;i

satisfactory written and oral examination in Anatomy, Physiology. Sur-

gery, Chemistry, Materia Medica, Pharmacy, Obstetrics, Pathology and

Practice. They must also present a Thesis or Dissertation on some medi-

cal subject, a fair copy of which must be deposited with the Secretary of

the Faculty at least ten days before the commencement of the examination

at the close of the Lectures. These copies are preserved in the Medical

Library.

Students on arriving should call at once on the Secretary of the Faculty

to enter their names, present their certificates, andpurchase their tickets. They

may also obtain from him all necessary information in regard to boarding

houses.

Price of Board from $3.00 to $5.00 per week.

These five officers constitute the Executive Committee.

The objects of the Association are the revival of the memories of

student life, the establishment and perpetuation of friendly relations

among, the graduates of the Medical Department of Bowdoin Col-

lege, and the advancement of the interests of medical education.

Any person on whom a degree in medicine has been conferred by

Bowdoin College may become a member of this society by signifying

his desire to this effect in writing to the Secretary, and paying one

dollar to the Treasurer, provided his character and professional stand-

ing be satisfactory to the Executive Committee.

The annual meeting is held at the Medical School on the day of

the graduating exercises.

It is hoped that all graduates of the Medical School of Maine will

immediately take the steps necessary to become members of the

Alumni Association, as the success of the society contributes to the

prosperity of their Alma Mater.
