living in the Winton Area.
All four Elected officers of the student union

IMPROVING RELATIONS This is an opportunity for local residents to meet with Students
and discuss how to live more harmoniously in Winton and to subtly inform new students about local issues .
However, we don’t want to over-egg the nega)ve messages
because new students are already bombarded with messages from various sources:
- The Student Union handbook (informa)on about how to live in the community)
- The Bournemouth Uni handbook (including a system of fines and punishments for an)-social behaviour in the community)
- The University Police Officer (Andy) - Elected officers of the Student Union of Bournemouth University
(SUBU) We want to get a posi)ve response from new students to local
residents by genera)ng a sense of social responsibility rather than enmity. New students will know nothing of past issues, so this is an opportunity for both residents and students to see each other as human beings, and generate good will on which we can build future good behaviour.
Student Union of Bournemouth University is organising events in the community for freshers.
Councillor Anniina Davie says: “Meet us at the Winton forum to discuss local issues in the Winton Rec Clubhouse.”
Councillor Johann Edward says: “Here to help. Our surgery is the 1st Saturday of each month in Winton Library.“
Councillor Theo Stratton says: “Contact us! Write to [email protected]”

STUDENTS HELPING IN THE COMMUNITY Each year, between 4 and 500 students from Bournemouth University volunteer to help out in the community. In particular, Business Studies students have to do a one-day project in the community, such as litter picking, tidying up a park, cleaning graffiti, or re-painting children’s playgrounds.
If you have an idea for something you would like these student volunteers to do
in Winton – let us know.
Students will start their community projects in November, so we need ideas a.s.a.p. so we can organise events over the next couple of weeks.

SHOP WATCH UPDATE
Since our last update, Shop watch has clocked up a number of new successes. Tesco has now joined the scheme and a number of other local retailers are considering joining, including a jeweller, a coop, a salvation army shop. A prolific shoplifter has been given a 12 week prison sentence thanks to the scheme. The shoplifter was known by scheme members and banned from local shop watch stores. Despite the ban the shop lifter continued to offend, and the fact that the offender had already been banned under the shop watch scheme contributed to the custodial sentence.
