What is Bounce Rate?

• Bounce Rate is the percentage of single-page sessions ( i.e. a session is the period time a user is actively engaged with your website, app, etc. All usage data (Screen Views, Events, Ecommerce, etc.) is associated with a session.)

• Bounce Rate for a page is based only on sessions that start with that page.

Let's extend this example to explore the Bounce rate metrics for a series of single-session days for a website like sports.com

• Saturday: Football > US Football > NFL

• Sunday: NFL > Exit

• Monday: US Football > Exit

• Tuesday: Football > NFL > US Football

• Wednesday: US Football > NFL

• Thursday: Football > NFL

The % Bounce Rate calculations are:

• Page_Football: 0% (three sessions began with Page Football, but that was not a single-page session, so it has no Bounce Rate)

• Page_US Football: 50% (two sessions started with Page US Football, with one leading to a bounce)

• Page_NFL: 100% (one session started with Page C, and it lead to a bounce)

Exit Rate

• Exit rate as a term used in website traffic analysis.

• Exit Rate is the percentage that were the last in the session.

Let's consider the previous example to explore the Exit rate metrics for a series of single-session days for a website like sports.com

• Saturday: Football > US Football > NFL

• Sunday: NFL > Exit

Reasons for a high Bounce Rate

Few pages site with Thin Content

• If you've only few pages (like Home, About, Contact) of your site then visitors don't have much opportunity for more pageviews and Analytics doesn't register multiple pageviews unless users reload that page again.

• As a consequence, few page site have high bounce rate.

Incorrect Implementation of Analytics Code

• If you've a multiple page site with a long content but seeing high bounce rate then recheck that you've added the Analytics tracking code to all your pages.

User Performance

• Some user bookmark your site pages and they return the same page and leaves too from that page. This considered as a bounce.

Poor Site Design

• If your site landing page is full of poor content or advertisement poster then user don't stay too much time in your site.

• Optimize your pages with appropriate keywords and redesign them.

• Checked that your page Ads are relevant with page content.

• You should redesign your site landing page if necessary.

How to check Analytics code working or not

There are few ways to check your Google Analytics tracking code is working or not. If you've any doubt in mind then try one of the

option below to check your tracking code or set up your tracking code again.

Check Real Time Report on Analytics

• With the Real Time data, you can monitor the user real time activity on your website.

• If you see right data on this report, then your tracking code is correctly working.

• Now navigate to your site property to which you added your tracking code.

• Go to the Reporting tab.

• Select Real Time > Overview

Use Google Tag Assistant to Verify

• Google Tag Assistant is a free chrome browser extension that will help you to understand if Google Analytics tag are firing correctly or not.

• Google Tag Assistant also show you the tracking code that is currently active.

How to Install Google Tag Assistant

Before applying Google Tag Assistant

Go to Google Chrome Settings > Extensions > Get more extensions

Search for Google Tag Assistant & click on "Add to chrome"

Now go to google.com, search for "locally discover" and click on Google tag assistant icon then click on "Enable".

After clicking on the Record it's showing a Red dot and now go to your website.

when you're visiting your website the color of Tag Assistant is changed, now it's green and showing 1.

Click on the Tag Assistant again and hit the "Stop Recording"

Now click on the "Show Full Report" button.

Tag Assistant Different Icon Color Means

• A GREY icon with an 'x' indicates that no code was found on the page.

• A GREEN indicator will show if a valid tag was found. The number in the icon indicates the number of tags that were found.

• A BLUE indicator will show there are suggestions on improving overall tagging health.

• A YELLOW indicator will show that a tag was found with minor implementation issues.

• A RED indicator will show that a tag was found with critical implementation issues.
