A little piece of Calvin history left last June as we celebrated the retirements of Mary Bosman and Linda Dykstra. Fifty-nine years of Calvin’s history was affected by these two remarkable women. Were you one of their students? Take a moment and reflect on the impact these teachers made on your life. Like many of our retired teachers, both Mary and Linda will continue serving Calvin Christian School in the years to come. In addition, Mrs. Bosman looks forward to spending more time at her family’s cabin, in her garden, and with her grandchildren. Mrs. Dykstra’s daughter and family live in Minnesota so we foresee many trips for her to the “Land of 10,000 Lakes!” Both of these women were dedicated to their students, to their work, and to Calvin Christian School. They have been good and faithful servants.....they have left a legacy...and have now passed the baton on to others. We are very grateful for all they have done to make Calvin Christian School a better place! work nights (far left).

AfterIt was a summer of improvements for Calvin’s campus. With the

help of many hands - mostly volunteers - and over $100,000 in donations, Calvin was able to redo all 10 student bathrooms, add an accessible bathroom for guests and staff near the office, re-tile

the hallway floors, update lighting in classrooms and stage, paint classrooms, hallways, and bathrooms, replace drinking fountains, purchase lunch tables, and replace

computer lab computers! Thank You to all of our donors who supported these needs!

“The FALL AUCTION is a fun event for us to attend with family and friends. We enjoy our time with many past and present families. Calvin was influential in my life and the lives of my kids, and it’s nice to go back and contribute to this cause. This year was a lot of fun; there was good food, large attendance, and a lot of great items up for bid. We love to help out the Christian Education at Calvin and look forward to attending again next year. ” - Jerry De Young ‘64

GOD IS AT WORK AT CALVIN: enrollment remains strong with waiting lists in some classes, test scores still soar, and the authentic spiritual growth is contagious. Our facebook page is always full of CCS stories and happen-ings so you can stay in touch with Calvin’s community and events.

Outside of your financial and prayer support, your time and talent make a huge impact at Calvin! Calvin offers many volunteer opportunities to our families and friends. It could be helping a teacher with clerical work, reading to a student, or sharing athletic or hobby skills with our Middle School students during their Club period; the possibilities are up to you. Please consider blessing our students - our website has more information on serving. If your interest or talent isn’t listed, suggest it to us!

Parent Quotes

“I appreciate Calvin’s holistic focus. In addition to rigorous academics, [they] encourage confidence, integrity, and above all a thirst for the Lord.”

“I am confident my son will leave Calvin grounded in the Word of God as well as academically

surpassing any benchmarks set before him!”

“What we LOVE about Calvin is that it’s a family environment. It is a great place for our children to learn, build upon their faith, and grow! The teachers partner with the parents. And Principal Moes - along with the entire staff - are concerned about the students and their families.”

THANK YOU to our faithful donors for your generous support, for everyone who participated at the Fall Auction & Evening for Calvin, and the people who worked so hard for the benefit of the

school. These events brought in a combined total of nearly $100,000!

The CALVIN CHRISTIAN SCHOOL FOUNDATION began in 1983 to receive, accumulate, manage, invest, and disburse capital funds and properties entrusted to it. For over 30 years they have been returning interest from those funds back to the school, lowering tuition and thereby taking a portion of the financial burden off parents' shoulders. The current board (L-R Curt DeGraff ‘94, Brent Burghgraef ‘03, Zachary Roeda ‘03, Pam VanderMeer ‘91, Angela Oldenkamp ’97, Ruth Boss ‘71, Pam Peevy, Cheri Taylor-Lawton) has also been active in the recent capital improvements.

A majority of the Foundation’s donations come from memorials and estate gifts. Calvin has teamed with the Barnabas Foundation to offer free, confidential, Christian estate counseling to help you plan your assets to have a maximum impact for your family and Kingdom causes. If you would like more information, please contact Curt DeGraff, Director of Development, at (708) 431-2501 or at [email protected]. You can also visit calvinschool.org/giving.

CONGRATULATIONS to the recipients of the 2014 CCS Foundation Centennial Award: Natalie Bivona and Issy Neibert! They submitted an essay to the CCS Foundation with a proposal to enhance their school. As a result, a Wall Mounted Water Refilling Station was installed outside of the gym to help students, staff, and visitors stay hydrated. The refilling station is not just a water fountain, it efficiently refills reusable water bottles. As part of their research, Natalie and Issy found that the cost of the Station and its installation

would exceed the $500 award. To show their dedication to their proposal, they committed themselves to raise the additional funds.

JOSH ROEDA '97 is an electronic media manager at Faith Church, Dyer, IN. Through his position at Faith, he had the opportunity to go with a group to Rwanda, Africa. This trip opened his eyes to the impact and fulfillment of producing film and video for a higher purpose. Josh writes, "I'm encouraged daily to see what [God] is doing in his church around the globe. There are many more people to reach for His glory. I just hope and pray that He continues to use me in whatever way possible to further His Kingdom. He has blessed me with a life of doing something that I'm passionate about and I'm grateful". Josh really enjoyed getting back on Calvin's campus last Spring, filming a promotion video now up on our website’s homepage. He appreciates the friendships he made at Calvin; and

remembers great teachers, music class with Mr. Brummel, and Crazy Hot Lunch.

SHONTAVIA WEATHERLY '09 is currently a Sophomore at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. In high school, Shontavia was able to go with the French/Spanish departments of Chicago High School for the Arts to France and Spain. They were abroad for 10 days, and she loved learning about and being immersed in the different cultures, which allowed her world to become so much bigger. These experiences have played a big role in her decision to become a French major in college. The Lord has been encouraging her to be an encourager - having personal relationships with people, hearing their stories, and letting them know they are important and created perfectly by The Creator. Some of her greatest Calvin memories include Battle of the Books, The Book Nook, and the before and after-school workshops!

SARA (KRAMER) AHIOME '02 and her husband George were appointed as missionaries to Abuja, Africa last year. This past year, they have been raising support experiencing God's faithfulness through the process. With great joy and anticipation, Sara and George departed for their journey to Abuja in early Nov. They are truly passionate about the work they are beginning out there: they hope to identify, encourage, equip, and connect indigenous leaders to follow the Spirit in making the Gospel visible in their community. They ask for your continued prayer support! Sign up for their updates or to receive prayer letters by email at Calvin’s alumni page. In their words, "We often feel small and unqualified for the task at hand, but God

keeps reminding us that He is walking with us and empowering us step by step by His grace..."

LUKE SCHAAP '45, just celebrated his 83rd birthday. A retired chemist, Luke graduated in 1957 from Northwestern University with a Ph.D. in Chemistry. after being a part of the first official freshmen class at Illiana Christian High School. He continues to be an active member at Cottage Grove CRC where he has served as an Elder and looks forward to acting as a wise man in the upcoming "Journey of Joy." Luke has a lot of history with Calvin Christian School. His wife, Pauline (Klompien), who recently passed away, taught at Calvin from 1954-1959 until they got married. Pauline was also a CCS graduate ('50). All of their 4 children graduated from Calvin Christian School as well - Paul ('74), Ruth ('75), Jean ('78), and Mary ('81). Luke has many good memories of his time at Calvin Christian School, and CCS is grateful that Luke has shared some of those memories, along with many great photos, in the historical yearbook on our website.

CHANEL EASTER '11 is a current senior at Illiana Christian High School. She is a part of Calvin Christian School's Extended Care staff. Some of her favorite memories are the 8th grade trip to Springfield, 7th grade Indiana Dunes trip, picking apples in Kindergarten, family fun nights, and the annual Fall Auction. Looking to the future Chanel says, "I see the Lord working in my everyday life... Right now I am in the process of making college and future decisions and that causes me to have to seek Him and listen to what He says in order for me to walk in His path. I don't know exactly what He has in store for me but I know it's something great and I'm excited to find out what it is!". Chanel serves in the media, children and youth ministries at her church, and last winter

she had a lot of fun in the Right to Life march, helping end abortion.
