Government policy called Great Teaching, Inspired Learning required every

NSW school teacher to be accredited against the Australian Professional

Standards for Teachers.

Previously only those teachers who were accredited on or after the 1 October

2004 or who returned following an absence of 5 or more years were required to

be accredited.

Teacher Accreditation commenced in NSW from 25 January 2005

In 2010 all Education Ministers agreed to Nationally Consistent Teacher Registration.

Where ever you go in Australia, you will be required to meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as a condition of registration or accreditation.

In 2018, NSW will be party to the Mutual Recognition Agreement and the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement.

All pre-2004 teachers will be accredited on 1 January 2018

This is a one-off process designed to recognise the skills, knowledge and expertise of existing teachers.

All accreditation decisions at Proficient Teacher are made by Teacher Accreditation Authorities (known as TAAs)

The DoE is the TAA for all Government schools

Teacher librarians will be accredited by their TAA by recognising their teaching practice in the school

The Office of Children’s Guardian has established a timetable for all NSW teachers to have a new Working with Children Check clearance

Teachers apply on line www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/check and in person to Road and Maritime Services Office or a Service NSW office

Secondary teachers: - 1 April 2016 - 31 March 2017

Primary teachers: - 1 April 2017 - 31 December 2017.

Teachers existing academic and/or teaching qualifications will be recognised as meeting the requirements for accreditation.

(i) Exchange of information between TAAs and the BOSTES

(ii) Teachers will be provided with a log in and will confirm their details on the Teacher Portal of the teacher accreditation website.

Teachers will be sent an invoice in late 2017 for the 2018 annual fee

The invoice includes a range of payment options

The fee is currently $100

The fees are used to support the functions of teacher accreditation in NSW including:-Provision of targeted professional development-Managing quality assurance of all accreditation decisions-Determining entry into the teacher profession through provisional and conditional accreditation -Strengthening entry requirements to initial teacher education programs

All teachers are required to maintain their accreditation by undertaking professional development that is aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers

Professional development that is based on the Standards ensures that teacher’s professional needs are met

Teachers must complete 100 hours of Professional Development over 5 years (7 years for casual and part time teachers)

At least 50 hours of professional development must be QTC registered

A report is required to be completed at the end of the 5 year period.
