COMBINED ANNUAL REPORTJULY 1 , 2018 – JUNE 30, 2019
BOSMA ENTERPRISES
BOSMA VISIONARY OPPORTUNITIES FOUNDATION
IN THIS ANNUAL REPORT, WE REFLECT ON THIS YEAR’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HONOR THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE TO MAKE THEM POSSIBLE. MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE WILL SHOW YOU THE IMPACT OF BOSMA ENTERPRISES’® MISSION ON HOOSIERS WHO ARE BLIND OR VISUALLY IMPAIRED.
Dear Friends,
It is an honor to pen our first annual report letter to you as CEO of Bosma Enterprises and Chair of the Board.
As a service-disabled veteran, Jeff’s pathway to leadership took unexpected turns over his decades-long military, non-profit and government career. But there is no other place he would rather be than leading an organization whose mission is to create opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired. We are humbled to further our shared quest to ensure the same equality of opportunity to all people who are blind or visually impaired.
Despite this year of transition, Bosma Enterprises continued to deliver exceptional, visionary solutions to clients and business partners alike. We packaged and shipped over 500 million exam and surgical gloves, produced 180,000 disposable medical kits and shipped to more than 700 locations around the world, all while maintaining a 99 percent order accuracy.
But 2019 was also a year of expansion, growth and diversification. We announced plans to expand our health and safety products while introducing our Good Works® commercial brand to retail and healthcare markets. Fifteen new employees who are blind or visually impaired joined our team, and we are particularly proud that more than 40 employees became Lean Six Sigma certified during our organization-wide professional development effort.
We are continuing to work aggressively in Washington, D.C. to advance legislation to ensure our continued partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Though slow, we are encouraged by legislative progress and remain optimistic we can resolve challenges posed by procurement changes in the VA. Meanwhile, we are pursuing an ambitious plan to diversify, innovate and mitigate uncertainty.
As you will learn in this annual report, Bosma Visionary Opportunities Foundation experienced a record-setting year in raising funds to support the comprehensive rehabilitation programs of Bosma Enterprises. We encourage you to join us at any one of our upcoming 2020 events. We are especially looking forward to celebrating our 10th anniversary of Dining in the Dark on April 4, 2020.
We would also like to extend an open invitation to answer any questions or simply to become acquainted. Call anytime at 317.684.0600 to arrange a time to meet in person.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Mittman Matthew HasbrookPresident & CEO Chair

IMPROVING PROCESSES GROWING THE ORGANIZATION
In an organization-wide effort to improve and diversify its business capabilities and create new avenues of employment for people who are blind or visually impaired, Bosma Enterprises has implemented Lean Six Sigma (LSS) business solutions across all of its various operations. To do this, more than 40 employees are now Lean Six Sigma certified. The effort will increase performance levels, revenue, employee morale and the overall quality of our products and services.
Lean Six Sigma gives organizations seeking continuous quality improvement an objective method to diagnose problems, a system to organize employee efforts and an improvement methodology that can be applied to a new or existing process. A person who is LSS certified understands how to implement, perform, interpret and apply these principles at a high level of proficiency.
This effort is increasingly important as Bosma Enterprises builds its focus on growing the organization and positively impacting the astoundingly high unemployment rate for people who are blind or visually impaired. As a result, LSS now is being applied to all areas of Bosma Enterprises, including our Foundation, business lines, programs and services.
Since implementing LSS at Bosma Enterprises, there have been increases in productivity and efficiencies across all areas of the organization. The packaging and logistics operations alone have seen a 25 percent increase in productivity.
The goal is to make continuous improvement a part of the culture of Bosma Enterprises — empowering employees to be a part of the process. With so many LSS certified employees in the organization at all levels, it allows all of us to speak the same language and pursue the same goals, using the same process.
These employee certifications were funded by a grant from Lilly Endowment to help Bosma Enterprises build financial sustainability and ensure future growth for our organization.
PROGRAMS OUTCOMES:
INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS BRING INDEPENDENCE
Over the past year, Bosma Enterprises has served over 800 individuals who are blind or visually impaired through its innovative programs. Our Community-Based, Center-Based and Community Employment Services continue to be a lifeline for Hoosiers who have lost their eyesight. These important programs provide critical training, allowing people to be self-sufficient.
Due to unique challenges and changes in government funding, Bosma Enterprises has developed new programs to address these challenges, ensuring individuals who are blind continue to receive services. All of Bosma Enterprises’ programs continue to be offered at little or no cost to our clients due to the generosity of corporations and people like you.
Vision Rehab 101, a new program, aims to serve people who are blind or visually impaired in a group setting. Last year, the program served 48 people who had nowhere else to turn for services. Clients participating in Vision Rehab 101 learned about adaptive technology, orientation and mobility, keyboarding, and independent living skills like cooking and cleaning.
Although the program is only one week, clients are exposed to critical training that allows them to cook safely within their homes, learn how to use their smartphones and other training designed to boost their confidence and abilities — helping put them back on a path of independence.
Another innovative program implemented last year was Tech Tuesdays. The program offers people who are blind the opportunity to take advantage of open lab times with our staff who are skilled in assistive technology. Last year, 24 Hoosiers who are blind or visually impaired participated during Tech Tuesdays.

This past year, Bosma Enterprises announced a very exciting step in the diversification of its lines of business. The new Good Works commercial brand will expand the organization’s health and safety products into the commercial retail market. Not only will Good Works® products make a difference for customers, but they will also positively change the lives of the people who pack and ship them, the majority of whom are blind or visually impaired.
According to the American Foundation for the Blind, there are 25.5 million adult Americans with vision loss. Along with the other challenges that come with blindness or a visual impairment, these men and women are facing a 70 percent unemployment rate. That is what makes this new brand and line of business so important to our mission.
The first product to launch under the Good Works brand is Good Works Ice Melter in convenient 10 lb. shaker jugs. The super-powered formula used to make the ice melter consists of a four-way blend of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride, making it possible to melt through ice in temperatures as low as -16°F. The specially-designed blue granules begin melting ice on contact and contain powerful corrosion inhibitors to reduce damage to ferrous metals. In addition, the blue-colored crystals are more easily seen against ice and snow, reducing waste and overuse.
Good Works Ice Melter will be available in Ace Hardware stores this winter season.
LAUNCH OF COMMERCIAL SALES WITH GOOD WORKS® BRAND
Dear friends and supporters,
Bosma Visionary Opportunities Foundation experienced a record-setting year in raising funds to support the comprehensive rehabilitation programs of Bosma Enterprises. In total, we raised over $1.1 million and have total assets in the Foundation of $10.8 million.
A new scholarship, the Lou Moneymaker Scholarship for the Blind or Visually Impaired, will support graduating high school students who are blind or visually impaired from Marion and Hamilton counties attending a post-secondary educational institution in Indiana.
We are proud to welcome 339 new donors to the Foundation. It is exciting to have them as part of our mission and changing the lives of Hoosiers. Additionally, our individual donors gave nearly a quarter-million dollars and provided 86 white canes for people who are in need. We were also able to welcome new grantors like Vectren Foundation, who gave to support our Student Training and Employment Program for high school students who are blind or visually impaired.
This past year, our special events: Dining in the Dark, Bosma Visionary Golf Classic and the Thomas C. Hasbrook Award Luncheon, raised nearly $370,000. We are looking forward to this year as we celebrate 10 years of Dining in the Dark with a masquerade ball. Mark your calendars now for April 4, 2020, as we toast cheers to 10 years!
Sincerely,
