Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions

By 2016, Bosch has produced over 7 billion

MEMS sensors.

Quantum leaps in computing power, device miniatur-ization, growing energy efficiency and the wide avail-ability of wireless networks create an ideal basis for connecting an ever-increasing number of objects, devices and production systems to the Internet of Things. This paves the way for fully new benefits, applications and markets for your products. Hav-ing Bosch as your partner in this rapidly changing environment gives you a head start on the compe-tition, as we are a global market leader in MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) sensors, one of the key technologies of the IoT. Our portfolio ranges from connected devices to end-to-end solutions for all fields of application, with a focus on Industry 4.0 & Logistics and Connected Mobility.

Connected DevicesWith application-specific sensors and proprietary algorithms, our devices trans form raw data in real time into customer-relevant information. All appli-cation data is processed with low-power technology components, and is transmitted using the low-ener-gy radio technology of your choice. In addition, we offer actuators for switching, controlling and auto-mating your systems.

Complete SolutionsWe can offer complete solutions including sensor devices, data transfer, and integration with cloud platforms and other services. Relevant information can be displayed in an app, or integrated into your company‘s backend system. This makes it possible to extend your existing product and service portfoli-os, and paves the way for new business models and revenue streams.

The Internet of Things is ready for your products. We bring them to life.

No other technological development is likely to have such a dramatic and lasting impact on our business world as connecting products and devices via smart sensors. One of the players driving the Internet of Things (IoT) forward on a global scale is Bosch. Our extensive experience in electronics, sensor technol-ogies, and software opens up completely new oppor-tunities for your business.

Sensors. Analysing the world with more than five senses.Tiny MEMS sensors monitor the physical environ-ment of your product or system and transfer this in-formation to the virtual world. Their microscopically fine structures can be used to measure acceleration, yaw rate, the earth’s magnetic field, temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, light, sound, and gas. The sensors are equipped with microcontrol-lers, miniature batteries and radio chips, and are intelligently programmed.

Software and algorithms. Maximizing intelligence and battery lifetime. It’s the software that makes our devices smart. Cut-ting-edge algorithms process the large amounts of in-formation generated by our sensors, and ensure that only fully relevant results are provided to the user or the connected system. Thanks to context awareness, our devices only need to operate a subset of sensors at a specific point of time. This allows us to provide products with highly extended battery lifetimes and enables per-formance that is simply not possible with standard off-the-shelf sensors.

We bring things to life to enliven the industry.

A humidity sensor observes that the level of humidity in the process is rapidly decreasing.

The sensor’s intelligent software suspects that a water pump is malfunctioning.

As the world’s largest supplier of MEMS sensors, Bosch produces more than one billion sensors a year.

Enormous experience in tiny sensors

The integrated wireless chip con-nects to the service application.

Service personnel replace the damaged pump before process efficiency can de-crease any further.

Connectivity. Anytime. Anywhere. Via any available technology. In the Internet of Things, connectivity is the key. Each application area has its own requirements. These depend on the volume, flow, and speed of the sensor data, as well as on the distance over which it needs to be transmitted to its destination. Choosing the most suitable connectivity technology requires a deep knowledge of existing wireless solutions and future technologies. Experience in the telecommu-nications industry gives us a strong competitive ad-vantage.

Taking action. Tending to issues before they turn into downtime. The information provided by sensors and transmit-ted by chips initiates action in the physical world: Service staff learns about a malfunction before a machine or entire plant has to stop production. Pro-cess parameters adapt to a changed humidity level to compensate the new conditions. Bosch has ex-tensive expertise in connectivity products enabling predictive maintenance and provides customized solutions for all requirements.

Wirelessly connected production is the way of the future. It enables machines to monitor and opti-mize themselves and production systems to follow instructions given by the products that they are manufacturing. Small batches can be manufactured cost-effectively and with optimal capacity utilization. In addition, we supply you with logistics processes that monitor themselves. Integrated sensors make it possible to track the location, flow, and condition of goods and vehicles at all times. Bosch develops and uses end-to-end-solutions and powerful devices that enable such efficient processes. This way, we are transforming from a lead user to a lead provider.

Application Examples ▶ Condition monitoring: Continuous monitoring of

machines’ relevant state parameters to optimize efficiency, uptime and utilization.

Industry 4.0 & Logistics. Efficiency, produc tivity and control every step of the way.

The software recognizes early on when maintenance is necessary, pre-venting unexpected downtime.

The software documents rough handling, falls, moisture, unusual temperatures, or opening of the packaging and transmits all the data wirelessly to the logistics center.

Packages with integrated sensors that register acceleration, humidity, temperature and light optimize the flow of goods.

Sensors wirelessly gather machine performance data

on a continuous basis.

▶ Predictive maintenance: Proper monitoring of operating conditions is essential for optimizing maintenance. Planned downtimes significantly in-crease overall equipment efficiency (OEE), and make production planning more flexible.

▶ Logistics: Smart sensor devices monitor goods across the supply chain. The increase in trans-parency results in a reduction of transport dam-ages and an improvement in quality.

Benefits ▶ Reduced maintenance cost ▶ Increased overall equipment efficiency ▶ Easy-to-use “plug & play” solution ▶ Optimized planning of maintenance process ▶ One-stop solution including software and

services ▶ Optimized logistics processes ▶ Transparent monitoring of goods

Imagine driving into a city and finding available park-ing space without searching at all. Our smart parking sensor recognizes which parking spaces are avail-able and reports their exact location to drivers via a smartphone app. On top of that, our new retrofit eCall plug improves safety throughout your journey. The smart sensor device is designed for crash de-tection of passenger vehicles and can be retrofitted to any type of car. Drivers can just plug it into the standard 12V socket and download an app to their smartphones.

Connected Mobility. More comfort and safety on the road.

Application Examples ▶ Smart Parking: Intelligent sensor devices moni-

tor and communicate parking space availability in cities.

occupancy ▶ Usage for on-street and off-street parking ▶ Enables new parking features such as search,

navigation and reservation ▶ Fast emergency services in the event of an

accident ▶ Easy and fast installation ▶ Valuable information for insurance companies

and owners

Sensors transmit the status of the parking

lot to a gateway.

In the case of a crash, sensors in the car can

transmit the user’s location and even trigger

an emergency call.

With an app, drivers can access relevant

information and find an available parking

spot within seconds.

Rapid-response teams can quickly locate accident sites.

The TDL is attached to the shipment to measure and record all relevant parameters, making the de-livery process of goods visible and traceable. These figures are documented and visualized through a mobile application. As each of the parameters can be individually configured, any transgression of set limits is traceable and clearly assignable to the stations throughout the entire transport process. The TDL provides added value for every logistics project, creating trust between all partners and providing important data for the optimization of the logistics process.
