Borrisoleigh Charity Cycle
Borrisoleigh Charity Cycle beganin 2004 as a fundraiser for theplayground which is now sited inthe Town Park. The plan was toget local people to seek sponsor-ship to complete the 25 mile cir-cuit through Thurles, Templemoreand returning to Borrisoleigh. Ona sunny September day over 50cyclists successfully completed the route and inthe process raised almost €8,000 for the play-ground development.
So successful was it that people were verykeen to continue the event and so was born theBorrisoleigh Charity Cycle. Over the last 10years the event has grown in popularity andapproximately €100,000 has been collected forvarious charitable organisations since it all be-gan. For the last few years the cycle has alsoincorporated a more challenging 50 mile cyclefor the more serious athlete which has helped toincrease the number of participants. The sup-port of the local community and businesses forthe event has also ensured its continuing suc-cess.
An offshoot of the Cycle has been the settingup of a training group of cyclist from the locali-ty and surrounding areas that meet up a numberof times during the week and a training spin of40 to 60 miles a couple of times a week duringthe Summer months is not uncommon. TheBorrisoleigh Cycling Team jersey has becomea familiar sight at many cycling events aroundthe county and the country including the SeanKelly Tour in Waterford and the Ring of KerryCycle.
On the June bank holiday weekend this yearmany members of the group took on the ulti-mate Irish cycle challenge by cycling from Mi-zen Head to Malin Head a total of 640kilometres over 4 days by various routes. Onthat weekend we had cyclists cycling South toNorth, others cycling North to South and evenone group of four cyclists that decided to short-en the trip so to speak and complete the journeyin three days. Thankfully all groups were suc-cessful and finished the trips safely and ontime. This was a huge undertaking and in-volved a lot of training spins in very poorweather conditions since January includingmany cold dark nights spinning around thestreet circuit in Templemore. Great credit isdue to all the cyclists and also those peoplewho provided on road support for them overthe four days of the event.
This year’s cycle is being organised as part ofthe Borrisoleigh Festival 2014 and will takeplace on Sunday 5th of October. This yearsevent will be a 25 mile cycle only and registra-tion will take place at 11.45am in the Square. The cycle is in support of Down SyndromeTipperary which is affiliated to Down Syn-drome Ireland. This organisation provides in-valuable support and assistance to families ofchildren with Down Syndrome. Hopefully thisyear’s event will once again be a very success-ful and accident free occasion.

Historical Society
As most of you will be aware this So-ciety was formally established lastyear. Our first significant project in-volved the organisation of a Histori-cal Walk -" Down Memory Lane"through Borrisoleigh on the 5th ofOctober 2013. This event featured inthe Gathering Festival 2013. It was aremarkable success as was evidentfrom the numbers attending (over200) age profile and gender balanceof the participants. Despite our bestendeavours, we were victims of ourown success and only succeeded incompleting half of the intended route.
Since that event, the Society has en-joyed many and varied events whichare widely spoken about throughoutthe local and wider Community. Wehad a lovely series of Lectures in theParish Centre during the Winter of2013 and the Spring of 2014. We alsohad some very enjoyable
Outings/Field Trips in recent months.Needless to say this is work inprogress and we will soon be prepar-ing our Autumn/Winter Programme.
In the meantime there is the matter ofpreparing for "Down Memory Lane"Part 2 which again will form part ofthis year's Festival Programme. Wehope to use the same format as lastyear with a mix of local Speakers anda few non locals. It is proposed tocomplete The Square, Upper Street toIlleigh Road and finish in PallasStreet.
Let's hope the October sunshine oflast year will return but more impor-tantly that your good selves will re-turn in even greater numbers so thatwe can all travel together in mind andbody "Down Memory Lane"
The Historical Walk scheduled for the 2014 festival has been cancelleddue to circumstances beyond our control. There will be live music instead

Bush & BriarRamblers
The Bush & Briar Ramblerswere established as a directresult of the Gathering Festi-val in Borrisoleigh in October 2013. Fol-lowing the festival walk on the Devils Bit,organised by Teresa Murray, a lot of in-terest was shown in forming a group, thusthe Bush & Briar Ramblers were born.
The Devils Bit is held dear to our hearts, not only for its wonderful walking terrainand views but also, as the place weevolved from and has been adopted as ourspiritual mountain and its image can beseen on our group badge.
We are a walking group setup to promoteand encourage walking as a leisure activi-ty. Our goal is simple, “To Get PeopleWalking”. Whether it is hillwalking or alevel walk that you wish to do, we try tocater for all.

At the White Gypsy Brewery, we make good beer. Our long term aim is to make that good beer frommalt and hops grown locally and to sell as muchof that beer, within 40 miles of the brewery door.
We believe that for any community to be a stableenvironment in which people can live, work andhave the prospect of a future, there needs to somedegree of sustainability.
And what could be more sustainable than the food we eat or the beer we drink. The more we produce that’s closer to home, the closer the money stays tohome. People’s lives improve and the sense of well-being increases leading tostrong, vibrant communities. It’s about taking control of our future one smallstep at a time.
So when you drink our beer, we thank you; not only for supporting us but alsoour aims to create a local beer industry, which is both sustainable, proud andIrish.Slainte
