The Reason Franciscans Wear Brown Aleteia / J P Mauro

“In the beginning, brown was all they had: undyed cloth was the cheapest available. By canon law, the numerous religious orders existing within the Catholic Church each wear their own distinctive garb according to the customs and laws of the institute. While it can sometimes be difficult to keep track of them all, the most easily recognizable religious robes may be those coarse brown ones worn by Franciscan friars, which are usually tied with a three-knotted rope, and paired with sandals. We recognize a Franciscan’s robes from 100 yards away, but how did their brown color become the standard for their order? Living Simply – Franciscans friars live their lives in solidarity with the poor, takings vows of poverty and living with few possessions. The Rule of St. Francis does not prescribe any particular color to the order, but it does invite its members to “wear humble garments,” to “dress in cheap clothing.” The Franciscans serve the poor at their level and it would not help their mission to be covered in finery while serving the destitute. Earth tones reflect the earthly body – Every order which takes a vow of poverty does so in order to demonstrate that possessions are not what define us, and to follow the words of Christ in Matthew 19:21: Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give it to [the] poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” OFM.org, homepage to the Ordo Fratrum Minorum, cities a biographer who mentions the saint’s admiration of the plain lark, suggesting that brown reflects earthly life and the works of the order to relieve earthly suffering: “Its plumage is earthy. It gives example to religious women and men that they should not have elegant and fine attire, but rather wear dull colors, like that of the earth.” In the beginning, brown was all they had – St. Francis began his order about 811 years ago, in 1209. At the time the brothers’ robes were supplied by peasants, who often were not much wealthier than the Franciscans. The most common color worn by the peasant class of the dark ages were varying shades of gray and brown, depending on the source of wool that was used. Undyed cloth was the cheapest available. The robe worn by St. Francis preserved at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels is gray. The Franciscans, whose clothing is meant to be utilitarian and long-lasting, were unconcerned by color, but as their influences grew, brown simply became “their color.” The color served another purpose as well. When the order first began, the brothers lived among the leper colony of Rivo Torto near Assisi, and spent much of their time climbing the mountainous region of Umbria in order to bring relief to the needy. The friars would often sleep in dirt, and the brown color was useful in helping them to still look relatively clean. The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, a more recent branch of the followers of Francis, are known for their gray habits.” PONDERINGS FROM FATHER BILL Back in 2017, I conducted a pilgrimage involving 103 parishioners to Italy. There were so many inspiring destinations, including Assisi in relationship to this article about the religious habits of the Franciscans. The habit speaks to deep truths that the priests or religious represent, much as the Roman collar is a metaphor of the hope of Jesus in a darkened world. The prayers and Mass our group shared at the underground tomb of Saint Francis of Assisi will never be forgotten, nor will observing the display case of the eight-century old habit he wore in ministering to the poor. We also went to the burial spot of Saint Claire of Assisi, where her incorrupt body is encased and can be visibly seen. She and Francis had a spiritual connection to each other, built on getting each other to Heaven. Our parish is blessed to have their holy examples from 800 years ago and that of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta more recently, as the path to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Father Bill

Msgr. Henry O’ Carroll Council #444 of the Knights of Columbus in Newburgh is excited to announce that we are starting a Family of the Month program. This program will involve our four churches: Sacred Heart, St. Francis, St. Patrick’s, and Our Lady of the Lake, which we support on many levels. Each month, one family will be selected with the help of the parish priest. Churches and the months for the award: Sacred Heart – July, September, and March St. Francis – August, December, and April St. Patrick’s - October, January, and May Our Lady of the Lake – November, February, and June This will allow three families per church per year. At the end of the year one family from the group of 12 will be selected as Family of the Year. The family selected does not need to be a member of the Knights of Columbus. There are seven items that will be considered for the family selection. Is the family supportive of each other? Does the family spend quality time together? Does the family attend weekly mass together? Does the family pray together outside of mass? Has the family made significant contribution to the parish and church community? Does the family serve as a role model of Catholic family values? Parish Pastor Recommendation. There are no fees involved. Each family selected will receive a certificate and a gift from Msgr. Henry O’ Carroll Council that will be given out at a specified mass. There are forms you can fill out to nominate your family or another family you think would be deserving of the award. The form will be near a box in the back of each church where you can drop it off, or you can contact us by email at [email protected], or you can call Bill Kuntz with any questions at 201-697-9920. Thank you for your interest. Good luck to all families, and God bless all.

GREETINGS FROM HANOI, VIETNAM Hi Father Bill: Thanks for your good news. Very happy that now you have Father John Anthony as Parochial Vicar to help you with spiritual needs of God's People at the Parish of Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Surely, it is a big relief for you! May you both have God's many blessings. I am very sorry I am still in the situation of waiting for an international flight to return to the United States. My thoughts and prayers are over there each day. Please stay well. Father Peter Father Peter thanks for your gracious note. This has been an arduous time for all of us. Please be safe, and glad that Newburgh and our parish will be your retirement home. Keep me updated about your circumstances. God bless you. Father Bill Pope Francis’s Prayer to Mary During Coronavirus Pandemic O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to you and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

“Live Simply So Others May Simply Live” .........St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

“Hold fast to the rudder of faith, that you may not be shaken by the heavy storms of this world.” Saint Ambrose of Milan

LOOK UP Look up, O you of little faith;

Let doubting cease. The battle is the Lord’s; He works

In a mysterious way. ‘Tis not by might, nor power, but see

His Spirit move today. Unprofitable servants we; Our duty done, we must

Watch for His victory, So, fearful one,

Be still, and trust.
