NEWS Alan Healy Coast 2 Coast Charity Bike Ride 2013 Jonathan Healy and six of his friends have finished their journey from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hoods Bay in Yorkshire. They started on the 28th June and finished on the 1st July (Alan’s birthday,) with the funds raised donated to Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Scunthorpe LINK, who looked after Alan in the last few weeks of his life. Tyre manufacturers in agreement over rally tread patterns Three leading tyre manufacturers have voluntarily agreed not to propose certain tread patterns for forest rally use after they were deemed too ‘aggressive’ during a meeting of the Stage Rally Tyre Working Group at the Motor Sports Association’s offices in Colnbrook. DMACK, Dunlop and Yokohama each submitted a provisional list of future gravel rally tyres but removed their respective Mud, DZ74R and A031 tyres following discussion. Hankook and Michelin were also present, while Khumo and Pirelli were unable to attend. It was confirmed that a Forest/Gravel Rally Tyre List of acceptable tyres for UK stage rallying will be issued for guidance in the 2014 MSA Yearbook and enforced from 2015. The manufacturers also agreed the template for a document detailing such tyres, which will help event scrutineers to check eligibility. Mike Broad, Stage Rally Tyre Working Group chairman, said: “I would like to thank everyone involved in these meetings for the constructive discussions that are helping us to make progress. The manufacturers understand that we are working to secure the future of rallying and appreciate that this entails reducing the impact of tyres on the forest environment. “Competitors can rest assured that we are not going to be taking away any major tyres at short notice. They should check that any tyres they have in storage comply with the guidance that will be issued in the 2014 MSA Yearbook. Opposite Lock Rally Due to be held at Manby, but cancelled following a further site visit by the organising team. Information from Slaithwaite MC said that the conversion of the airfield back to agricultural use had progressed much quicker than anticipated and there was no longer sufficient track remaining for a viable event. The club is searching for a suitable alternative in the hope that the event can continue in the future. Club Secretary The present post holder, Paul Rhodes, is to stand down after this years AGM in November, and so nominations for this position will be required. This will also mean that a new Secretary of the Event for Alan Healy Memorial Rally in 2014 will be required. The role is a secretary is shown in the MSA Motor Club Manual as: - Responsible for dealing with all non-specialist matters and correspondence and diverting to the correct official any matters requiring specialist attention Keeping the minutes of all meetings and circulating these to the members. Sending out notices of all meetings. Paul will assist the new incumbent prior to the 2014 event to ease the change over.

Lincolnshire airfields – ‘Bomber County’ The redevelopment of Manby, near Louth, sees this venue, along with Binbrook, Hemswell, North Coates, Hibaldstow, and Swinderby (Where Border MC ran the Torque BAC Rally along with Bury MC,) join the list of former airfields used for motorsport within Lincolnshire that are no longer available. The good news is Barkston Heath and Fulbeck are still able to host events and the investment put in by Richard Usher at Blyton has seen a purpose built circuit developed, although rallying is restricted to between November and March. Ludford and Wickenby were part of the Tour of Lincs and both were used on the 2013 Bruce Robinson Road Rally. Whether Twyford Wood (Called North Witham by the RAF) will ever see another event held there remains unsure, as the logging operations did a lot of damage, and Mablethorpe & DMC decided that the venue was unsuitable due to the breaking surface, though it is scheduled to be used later in the year by other clubs. Due to its location Lincolnshire had a great number of airfields during the Second World War, and the county has a proud aviation heritage, the best known being the Dambusters raid from Scampton, which has just seen the 70th anniversary honoured. WRC Rallying on British TV ITV4 has picked up the UK rights to screen highlights of the 2013 World Rally Championship, which will be broadcast on the Tuesday following each event with a repeat showing on Saturday mornings. The new ITV deal ensures the championship’s return to British television as well as guaranteed free-to-air coverage for the rest of the season. Each one-hour show will feature a comprehensive round-up of each leg of every round, plus driver interviews and reports from all the key stages. There is also expected to be extended coverage of the final round of the championship, Wales Rally GB, on November 15-17. Trackrod Rally Yorkshire - Sat 28th September Marshals, timing crews and radios required for Cropton The event will consist of Trackrod Rally Yorkshire, Trackrod Historic Cup, Trackrod BRC Challenge and The Armstrong Massey Land Rover Challenge, with the organisers hoping for around 150 entries. Signing on will be at the stage start from 0615 - 0700 and all the usual marshals goodies will be available. First car due at 0829. Thanks Tony Jones Commander Cropton 07792 375371 Future Club Events 2013 August 7th – Club night (DVD’s) Sept 1st - September Classic Sept 4th – Committee meeting 8:00pm prompt Nov 6th - AGM (All club members welcome) RAC Rally Championship A championship run over seven gravel rallies in England, Scotland and Wales and organised by the same team which runs the very successful Roger Albert Clark rally has been created following competitor requests for a ‘well-run, friendly, sporting series that is accessible and affordable to as many competitors as possible.’ The championship caters for cars from MSA historic Categories 1to 3 as well as cars prepared to FIA Appendix K. Additional classes accommodate cars built up to the end of 1986 as well as other pre ’87 cars that do not fully comply with historic regulations. To keep cost down are all one day events and management/ chase cars are banned. The bad weather saw 2 of the first 3 events rescheduled, but the one that did run, the Mid Wales Stages, attracted huge numbers of spectators. The Tour of Hamsterley is the next event with a capacity entry, including with over 60 historic cars. Rally GB – Good news for those in the North of the country Exciting plans for this year's new-look event include

A move to a new base in North Wales. 24 competitive stages culminating with the Great Orme. Return of night stages in Snowdonia. The return of spectator stages aimed at delivering a full day's top class family entertainment. Reduced ticket prices for 2013 plus a more flexible ticketing structure. Special discounted entry fees for UK crews.

More than half of the stages are either totally new or haven't been featured in the World Championship since the Nineties. Adding to the challenge and spectacle the opening three timed sections on Thursday evening will take place in darkness - a move that will find favour with the purists - as will the re-introduction of some classic Welsh forest stages in Snowdonia. Making the event more attractive to the wider audience now within easy visiting distance of the rally, both Saturday's and Sunday's schedule will include a family-oriented 'spectator stage' designed to bring the breath-taking action closer to the public. Details of these two very accessible venues will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Providing a fitting finale not just to Wales Rally GB but also to the entire 2013 FIA World Rally Championship, the event will reach its climax with a blast around the Great Orme early on Sunday afternoon. The revised ticketing structure is a result of extensive customer research. Prices of adult admittance to individual forest stages has been reduced to £15* (from £20 in 2012) while Day Passes have been re-introduced providing multiple stage access for just £33*. Moreover both tickets include a free programme priced at £7.50. The 'Kids for a Quid' scheme provides those aged between 9-15 with a four-day ticket giving access to all 24 stages for just £1*. Those aged 8 and under are admitted free. Sweet Lamb on Friday and the weekend's two spectator stages will be designated RallyFest Stages providing day-long family entertainment for all ages. As well as seeing the WRC stars and cars in action twice, RallyFest Stages will include a big screen, catering village, public address commentary, special displays, a Rally Dome, on-stage shows as well as other attractions. Individual tickets for these RallyFest Stages are priced at £25* with significant discounts available for families. The price for two adults and two children is £42* with an extra £1* for each additional child. Two shorter National Rallies will run alongside Wales Rally GB offering amateur competitors the chance to compete on the same stages and use the same Service Park as the World Championship contenders. Also that IMS was offering a special deal for UK crews keen to enter the main international event. Crews with British passports plus MSA competition licences will benefit from a discounted £1500 entry fee, reduced from the standard £2600. This, on top of the previously announced 'Road to Wales' initiative, which sees free entries to the international event being awarded to the leading drivers completing the MSA British Rally Championship, should guarantee attracting the best British crews back to the UK's premier rally event in 2013. The car has been the most reliable one he has ever owned, with only 3 non-finishes in 40 rallies, and the smiles per miles value has been great, but he now feels it is time to move on. At least the MKII Escort stands a chance of getting some work done on it. Stage Rally Championship 2013 Please be aware of the following: - The championship is open to all fully paid up members of Border Motor Club. Competitors can nominate any event they compete on to be a round and both drivers and co-drivers score points based on their class finishing position on any nominated event, with the best 4 scores counting towards the overall championship. 1st in Class - 20 points 2nd in Class - 19 points 3rd in Class - 18 points and so on up to 19th in Class 2 points 20th or less in class and starting an event 1 point

NOTE: Results are based on the finish in the class entered on an event and are irrespective of any awards received. It is the competitor’s responsibility to make sure that the Stage Rally Coordinator is informed of your nominated events and that he receives a copy of the results within 2 weeks* of the event running. *So that new members have the chance to put their results into the table should they want to, this is altered to the end of April. EVENT REPORTS London Rally For Heroes, Multi-venue 19th/20th April – Blair Bushby/Paul Rhodes retired Due to unforeseen circumstances, the crew were forced to retire on the road section to SS16.

Bickerton Skoda Hallamshire Stages, RAF Barkston Heath, 5th May – Sean Bailey/Wayne Langthorne 3rd O/A, 2Nd in class. Mel Hudson/Roy Bell 20th O/A 4th in class. Charlie & Paul Stephens 23rd O/a, 1st in class. Sheffield & Hallamshire MC obtained some more roads for this year which offered a different entry/exit to the sprint track, and meant that it was not all perimeter track left, right, left etc of previous years, as a lot of this area was used for servicing, which made a nice change. Of the Border Club members Sean Bailey had a fantastic day, and it is hard to believe that last year he was awarded a trophy for first novice on the same event. Mel & Roy thought he had retired after the first stage as he was seeded in front of them, but he was placed further up the starting order to avoid being baulked. Mel & Roy had a good day apart from being held up on some stages and on SS7 the BMW took a distinct liking for some tyres and cones, which lost even more time. With 2nd to 4th in class covered by 3 seconds, this was not good, but all in a days fun. Charlie & Paul Stephens continued with their class winning ways, finishing nearly a minute in front of the next competitor, and means they are currently leading the ANEMMC sealed surface multi-use championship.

TSW Border Classic, 12th May Encouraging that there was a larger entry than last year and positive feedback received from the competitors, so of who expressed an interest in the September Classic later in the year. As John Savage was in the throws of starting up a new business, thanks are due to Mark & Jayne Johnson and Steve Hill for all their assistance on the event. Shame it rained in the afternoon, but given the weather this country is currently having, it could have been called off due to snow drifts. The event is covered in more detail on the website or HERE Border Motor Cub marshals go to the Borders, 31st May – 2nd June. – Mark Johnson/John Martin Once again John Martin and I joined some marshaling friends of ours and journeyed North to the quick narrow lanes of the Scottish borders to assist with the infamous only closed road rally on the UK mainland, The Jim Clark Memorial Rally. Arriving on Thursday evening at the cottage we rent for the stay all the rest of the team were already on the beers, and after a couple of tins we unpacked and retired to bed. Friday morning came to fast, but after a good breakfast it was of to our stage, Blackadder, to start the setup ready for two runs on Sunday of the Reivers rally, which is the clubman event that runs after the main Jim Clark Rally. As the event uses public roads care has to be taken how much you can prepare of the 9.4 mile stage. After spending most of the day putting in stakes and taping up were possible we were called to help with the Abby St Bathens stage, which is run twice on Friday night after the Dunns town centre spectator stage. We looked after a twisty section including a jump, not an eventful first run through in daylight, but when night fell for the second stage things got a bit hairy as after being through previously, the crews were more confident, However even though some cars got out of shape at times, our section ran incident free. Roads opened at 11.30, then back to the cottage to bed. Saturday we helped with the Edrum stage, and were given junction 11 and 11+ on the famous jumps. After the first run of BRC, Challenge and National cars there was not much to report. The second run of BRC and Challenge cars went OK and then it was onto the Nationals. After most of the field had passed without incident, there was then a BANG and all the spectators ran up the hill. The road is lined with small trees and is a bit like a set of steps with five or six small jumps, but at 80 mph small becomes BIG. The BANG turned out to be a Subaru leaving the road and hitting four of the trees making a complete mess of the car; none of the panels survived the pounding. Thankfully both crew members were OK after being checked over by recovery, and after moving the bent car to a safe area, within 15 minutes the stage was restarted. On Sunday morning we returned to our stage to complete the rest of the setup bearing in mind the roads were still open to the public. All weekend the event suffered from the lack of marshals to the extent that some of the stages were cancelled, this also affected our stage. At 12.30 Saturday night we were looking at moving the start line to junction 4 to allow us to cover the stage safely with marshals. Thankfully we had enough to run the stage twice on Sunday, and had no problems on the day. A great weekend was had by all. If you want to see very quick cars on the public roads under controlled conditions then come and join us next year. Editor’s note: Local crew Stuart Ranby/Ian Bass competed on the Reviers section of the rally for the first time, and had an eventful weekend. They took a maximum time on SS1 after two punctures, which left them last of the field, but were climbing back up when on SS4 the sequential box didn’t select the next gear up a couple of times. The second one ‘buzzed’ the engine, leading to their retirement. Bill Cammack Memorial Trophy Rally, 22nd June For the second year in succession Mablethorpe & District Motor Club had to cancel this event They apologise to competitors who were looking forward to the rally. The organisers hope to find a suitable date and venue in 2014, and look forward to seeing competitors old and new.
