In March I was a presenter at the Niagara County Science Fair that took place at Stella Niagara. I presented the “Ready America” program to students in 5
th, 7
th and 8
th grades. I showed the
students a sample Family Emergency Kit and discussed how they can help their family’s prepare for weather emergencies that occur in Western New York. I also was invited to be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting at the Ransomville Masonic Lodge. At the end of the month, we held a Skills Enhancement Training for American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR & AED at the Frontier Volunteer Fire Department in Wheatfield. 19 people participated in the course that was taught by Richard Silvaroli, NYS Fire Instructor, AHA Heartsaver Instructor and Volunteer Fireman with Frontier Volunteer Fire Department. I am also excited to be partnering with the Countryside Community Neighborhood Watch (CCNW) to present “Preparing Makes Sense” Workshop on Wednesday, April 18 at the Newfane Community Center. At this Workshop, I will be presenting “Map Your Neighborhood,” a program designed to build and strengthen disaster readiness among neighbors (developed by Washington State Emergency Management). Please see the attached flyer (page 4) about the workshop and consider registering to attend with your family, friends or neighbors! Please contact Valerie Haseley at 716.205.0076 or [email protected] if you would like to have a presentation scheduled with your group.
Volunteers Needed for Annual Beautify Niagara Saturday, April 21st
Volunteers are needed to assist with cleaning up, painting and raking throughout Niagara Falls. Individuals, families with kids, or large groups needing community service hours (scouts, students, etc.) are needed to participate in this endeavor.
Community Kick-off and continental breakfast will be held at 8 AM at the Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel (under the arch in front of Casino entrance). You will then be assigned to an area to clean up (volunteers will be provided gloves and bags). Then, enjoy a picnic lunch at Hyde Park Oasis at 12 noon. National Volunteer Week is April 15 - 21, 2012. The theme for this year is

Are you a City of Buffalo CERT member that would like to volunteer at tabling events throughout
the City of Buffalo during the summer? We would love to hear from you! Currently we have an
ongoing opportunity to participate in the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmer’s Market during the summer.
Anticipated dates include May 12th, June 23rd, July 21st, August 18th, September 22nd, and
October 20th. Please let us know if you’re interested in participating!
Border Community SERVICE is gearing up for another City of Buffalo CERT class that will begin
April 25th at 20 Elmwood Ave. We will meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30pm. CERT
classes in the City of Buffalo have a unique spin as we partner closely with the Buffalo Fire
Department. As such, we rely heavily on their expertise and they are able to teach the majority of
the course. Please encourage interested individuals from around Erie County to take part in this
CERT class – they won’t be disappointed!
We’ve signed on to take part in the City of Buffalo Clean Sweep Initiative again this year.
Through the initiative we are planning to visit 25 streets throughout the city to bring preparedness
literature to area residents. We’re looking forward to spending time all around our city this
summer!
This month we’re also planning stops at Catholic Charities for an emergency preparedness
presentation, as well as the Forest District Civic Association. As always, please contact Dana
Estrada at 205-0075 if you wish to have a presentation in the City of Buffalo. We look forward to
hearing from you!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The Niagara County Medical Reserve Corps has invited Niagara County CERT to assist with the Tour de Cure in Niagara County this year. This event, which benefits the American Diabetes Association, is the largest bike tour in Niagara County, with up to 1200 riders, and involves several courses ranging from 6 to 100 miles in length. All courses begin and end at the NCCC campus in Sanborn.
This year's Tour de Cure will take place on Saturday, June 2, 2012. The first riders will depart around 6:00 a.m., and the event should end by 2:00 p.m. They need at least seven CERT members to assist the medical staff in triage and first aid at check-in points along the course (locations TBD); there will be physicians at these points also, and CERT volunteers may choose to work in shifts.
Please let me know if you are interested in helping and I will forward your information to the MRC. Please call me at 205-0076 or email at [email protected]. Thank you, Valerie Haseley Niagara County Project Coordinator
