ABOUT EIT ICT LABS

BOOSTING THE QUALITY OF LIFE BY ACCELERATING ICT INNOVATIONWith an ageing population and growing consumer empowerment, the call for a user-centric approach towards Health and Wellbeing enabled and supported by innovative and entrepreneurial ICT is imperative. Health and Wellbeing is an action line aimed at improving the quality of everyday life and sustaining a healthy lifestyle in the context of Ambient Assisted Living and Active Healthy Ageing.

AIM OF THE ACTION LINE HEALTH & WELLLBEINGThe action line Health and Wellbeing (AL HWB) wants to enable that people can live uncompromised,

comfortable, safe and active lives through to an advanced age as well as facilitate independent living

and prevent social exclusion. The action line focuses on providing meaningful and affordable services to

achieve impact on mental wellbeing, physical wellbeing and social wellbeing. In addition, it will provide

solutions to deal with various barriers such as cultural, social, legal & privacy, political and economic issues

associated with the market introduction of products and services and the scaling up of local initiatives and

ecosystems. Ultimately, investments will pay handsome dividends not only in generating very viable and

worthwhile opportunities but also in creating more affordable healthy ageing.

Population projections show that ageing is likely to affect the European Union. Pension, healthcare and

long term care pending will raise. Research is often centred around specific solutions for specific health

and wellbeing, at regional level, resulting in fragmentation. The Action Line Health and Wellbeing provides

ICT enabled breakthroughs to support the EU 2020 challenge: labor participation & independent living

increased by 2 Years.

Close collaboration in the EIT ICT strategy of the knowledge triangle Education, Research and Business is

crucial in achieving the overall goals of the action line. The main purpose of the End-of-Year event 2013 is

to give maximum showcasing space to all innovators from the AL HWB activities as well as the companies

of the HWB Business Community. The activity leads and participating companies of the HWB business

community proudly share their accomplishments.

1 TURN OUT BURNOUTThe ‘Turn Out Burnout’ activity of the Health and Wellbeing action line of EIT ICT Labs developed a framework for unobtrusive monitoring of stress and the context information about daily activities of a person, and provides the user with visual analytics about his/her stressors, thus allowing for timely interventions preventing burnout. The framework is now being validated in a study where stress coaches use it to prevent and fight burnout of their clients.Contact: Natalia Sodorova, [email protected]

2 COGNITIVE ENDURANCEThe ‘Cognitive Endurance’ activity of the Health and Wellbeing action line of EIT ICT Labs aims at the detection of mild cognitive impairment (first stages of dementia). On display: a live demo of the digital reminiscence therapy device together with the ‘smart-home in a suitcase’ (provided within the AHA Platform activity). Different activities of daily life will be emulated in the smart home environment and captured by the Cognitive Endurance application.Contact: Josef Hallberg, [email protected]

3 ACTIVE HEALTHY AGING PLATFORMThe activity ‘AHA platform’ of the action line Health & Wellbeing, is a distributed service independent platform hosting the application oriented services of the action line. The AHA platform can be used by new service-providers, and will lower their barriers for market-entry. The output is of interest for both SMEs and larger companies: it will allow them to focus on their own added value. This will increase innovation in the HWB area due to lower development and exploitation costs.Contact: Henk Eertink, [email protected]

4 HWB BUSINESS MODEL AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT The true value of the introduction of new technology and services lies in their business models. EIT ICT Labs’ Business Developing Acceleration demonstrates some approaches that were applied to the several HWB technologies. Aim was to support the development of valuable propositions to selected target groups, extract user requirements, develop potential revenue models and interest potential partners to participate in the activities.Contact: Henny de Vos, [email protected]

5 HWB POST-MASTER EDUCATIONThe HWB Post-Master education aims at delivering high quality technological designers, app developers, and health service researchers with a strong background in HWB. The activity started in 2012 with the Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e) and Imperial College London (ICL). In 2013 the University of Trento has been added to the programme and in 2014 the Tampere University of Technology will be included.Contact: Holger Kunz, [email protected]
