Teddy Bear’s PicnicThank you to all the children, parents, caregivers and grandparents who attended the Kindy Club Graduation on Friday. Despite the heat it was a fabulous morning enjoyed by all.Children were presented with their graduation certificate before enjoying their picnic morning tea. It was great to be able to catch up with all our friends since we saw them last for Kindergarten Orientation. We played with our teddy bears and enjoyed bear cupcakes. Year Six Sport Gala Day at LMHSYear 6 students enjoyed a Sport Gala Day at Lake Macquarie High School on Friday. They all had an amazing time despite the intense heat, mainly due to the excellent catering from the high school including lots of ice blocks, hot dogs and cold drinks. Year 6 played games run brilliantly by Year 7 students, had a tour of the school and met their future classmates from other schools. I was proud of the maturity the students showed whilst representing the school and I know how excited they are to go to Lake Macquarie High School next year, particularly with all the exciting changes taking place!

Attendance Water Fun DayStudents are striving to be at school on time in preparation for our upcoming attendance reward.The final reward day for 2015 will include an hour of water fun. Activities include sponge throwing, sprinkler games, games with super soakers and even a giant slip and slide. Students involved will need to keep covered in the sun and will require a change of clothes, towel and a plastic bag to bring home their wet uniform.Every school day counts. Breathe Easy this Bush Fire Season With bush fire season well underway, we are urging parents and school staff to be extra prepared and aware of asthma signs and symptoms. Asthma Foundation NSW CEO Michele Goldman warned wood smoke poses a serious threat to people with asthma, particularly children. “Children, the elderly, and people with asthma and other breathing problems are usually the first to feel the effects of smoke,” Ms Goldman said. Parents and carers of people with asthma need to be on the alert during bush fire season because wood smoke can trigger a flare-up or even a potentially fatal attack, “she said. “During this period it is absolutely vital that people keep taking their asthma medication. We are advising all people with asthma to carry their reliever medication at all times and to take their preventer medication regularly, as it can take some weeks to be fully effective. “On days when wood smoke levels are high, people should consider the places they intend to visit and weigh up the risks carefully.” For further information visit our bush fire page or for asthma concerns phone on 1800 278 462. The NSW Rural Fire Service recommends everyone in bush fire prone areas to put their bush fire plan into place. Current information on the status of bushfires can be obtained on the Rural Fire Service website at www.bushfire.nsw.gov.au or call 1800 679 737. Tips to Reduce the Effects of Smoke on Asthma Visit your doctor to update your written Asthma Action Plan. Continue using your preventer medication and ensure you have reliever medication with you at all times. When there is smoke from a fire in the area, unless you are advised to evacuate you should stay indoors, and close all windows and doors. If you have an air conditioner, switch it to recycle or recirculate. If you are in your car, put the air conditioner onto recirculate to reduce your exposure to smoke. If you are exposed to smoke and your reliever medication is not controlling your asthma symptoms start asthma first aid: sit upright and try to be calm, using your spacer give yourself 4 puffs, taking 4 breaths between each puff. Re-evaluate after 4 minutes. If no improvement, repeat the 4 puffs. If your situation does not improve seek medical assistance.

Bush Fire Plan The Department of Education has identified that Booragul PS is in a bush fire prone area and must have a Bush Fire Safety Plan. As a result, I have liaised with the local Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Work Health and Safety to develop a plan. I have outlined the procedures below to keep you informed. Melissa Scully, Principal In the event of a bush fire: Step 1 - Students, staff and visitors will be alerted and remain indoors or move to the nearest indoor area as per lockdown procedures Step 2 - If notified, teachers will move all students to the hall Step 3 - if notified, teachers will evacuate students by walking to Speers Point Park, near the swimming pool. In all cases the Principal and the Director of Lake Macquarie West will liaise with the RFS in decision making. Clear notification for parents is essential. All messages of a potential bush fire threat and evacuation will be available on electronic notice boards and school website. In the event of a power failure, signs will be posted for parents on the main gates. The RFS have an informative app 'Fires near me' that may be of assistance. Teachers will have class rolls with them at all times. If you are able to collect your child at any time, it is a requirement that you sign out your child. Only authorised persons will be able to pick up children, please do not be offended if you are asked for photo identification. In the event of a bushfire and you are unable collect your child please remain calm. I will be on site with teachers until every child is safely placed with a parent or caregiver.

We would like to send out a special THANK YOU to Lisa

and the team at IGA Woodrising for their continued

support of our Kindy Club.

They have donated the fruit and vegetables each and

every Friday for the 2015 program and we are very

pleased that they will be supporting us again during

2016.

The children have looked forward to the fruit break each

week enjoying a variety of different things.
