‘We become what we behold. We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us.’
Didier Faustino, Instrument for Blank Architecture
James J. Gibson
Because objects and environments have certain characteristics,
people will behave accordingly to these characteristics:
Perception drives Action
That is why we can steer ‘the world’ as in the activities and experiences of men with the ‘things’ we develop…..
4 generations of computers 4 generations of interfaces
At the end, the interface is the product: a stack of layers with their functions
Interface design……………. ……………Minority Report ……………Iron Man
Emerging issues
2 we produce to much emissions
3 we use to much energy
4 we expect much of new (energy) technologies
1 we get short of materials and natural resources
In the meantime we seem short of ideas
•how to continu designing products, buildings and cities
•how to proceed with this know-how
Option 1
Adding more heavy and more complex materials to reduce energy consumption results in - more weight, more transport, more emissions etc, - plus diminishing returns
Option 2
Generating our own, sustainable energy, to reduce the energy bills, comes with a too long return on investments
Option 3
Start adding intelligence: > matching energy supply with the energy needs > matching energy supply where the energy is needed
Internet of Things (IoT)
Ubiquitous computing
Swarm technology
Ambient intelligence
Smart dust
Internet of Things (IoT)
“The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it” Mark Weiser, 1991
Internet of people (man-to-man) Internet of services (man-to-machine) Internet of things (things-to-things)
Interaction: matching supply and demand Transformation: for information to operation
Not energy neutral, but ….. More energy efficient than man-to-machine interaction

Elektronische producten willen terugkeren naar hun essentie. Zodra je weet welk pad wordt afgelegd, welke stap in de spiraal zal worden gezet om een evolutie te versnellen, kun je ingrijpen.
