Corporal Chris Smith, a 14-year veteran of the sheriff's department, and Utz, a German Shepherd with almost ten years of service, were selected from hundreds of K9 teams throughout the state. Corporal Smith and Utz have tracked and apprehended more than 60 individuals during their tenure. The duo have participated in numerous drug arrests as well as given countless demonstrations at schools, service organizations and community events. "I'm very appreciative of the award," said Deputy Smith. "Utz is a fantastic partner and he loves his job protecting and serving the citizens of Boone County." A sheriff's deputy and his faithful crime fighting canine companion were recognized

for Outstanding Service by the Missouri Police Canine Association at its annual conference in

St. Louis.

Corporal Chris Smith, a 14-year veteran of the sheriff's department, and Utz, a

German Shepherd with almost ten years of service, were selected from hundreds of K9 teams
