Introduction

The inclusion of English in the Enlace strategy brings a special focus of attention on the performance of students in the use of the foreign language, to prove they possess a basic level in a variety of contexts. In order to familiarise students with standardised exams Subdirección Académica delivered a booklet, with a set of questions during the reunion held in EST 22 “Armando Cuspinera” last November. The idea then, was to determine what students needed to reinforce, recap or even acquire in terms of English. With that diagnosis teachers of English determined strategies either individually or as department to overcome difficulties and provide students with basic tools to solve this kind of examinations.

As long as the date for the exam now appears as a closer event, a last effort would complete the main purpose of the strategy, which is to prepare students of Technical Junior High schools in Mexico City, for a good performance in Enlace. The second booklet with standardised exams focuses on multiple choice questions to explore formal aspects of English as well as reading comprehension abilities. The questions are organised into five units under the thematic and contents scope of the 2006 English Programme. The reason to adopt this syllabus relies on the fact that this one, works as the basis considered to elaborate the exam. Enlace explores basic knowledge of English and the 2006 English Programme provides, in terms of contents, a the range of language that corresponds to a basic level.

SA undertakes the great responsibility of promoting strategies that support teachers of English in their diverse tasks, such as the analysis of academic standards or special projects from which Enlace is just one concrete example. The booklet includes as a first major component, a brief description of reading comprehension strategies and techniques. They provide a basic and clear description for teachers who lack familiarity with them. A second element refers to multiple-choice questions for first, second and third grades. In each unit teachers will find questions referred to formal aspects of English, followed by a set of reading comprehension questions.

We suggest to adapt as much as necessary to actually help students to prove that they are able to perform as expected by all people immersed in the teaching of English in public schools.

I practice some sports, sometimes I play basketball,I play volleyball, I tried soccer once. I also like to spend time at home, I sometimes watch TV, check the news, and watch soap operas. I really like journalistic programs.

My favorite music is Latin music, I enjoy listening to salsa, to samba, to Cuban rhythms and I also like dancing.

I really don’t like going to crowded places, for example Christmas shopping, I think it´s horrible to be with people stepping on you all the time. I hate when people try to force me to do things.

I really don’t like milk, I hate sea food, I don't really like Chinese food but sometimes I can stand it. What I can’t stand is raw food, that´s from Japanese food.

I hope you got to know me.

Walnuts the Dog

Story By: Andrew Frinkle

“I’m ready for the responsibility.” Adam had said last week. Today, that meant they were choosing a new dog.As they drove up to the place, Adam was filled with excitement. He’d wanted a dog for years, but his parents hId always said, “You’ll love it fIr a few months, and then we’ll have to take care of your dog.” Finally, at age ten, he was getting his dog.

They entered the animal shelter and were greeted by a friendly blonde woman who explained the rules: they could go in the back, they could take a look at dogs, and then they could request to meet one in a small room where they could introduce themselves to the dog. She, like his parents, also explained how important it was to choose a dog for life, not just for a short time.

Adam hardly heard what she said. He was all geared up to choose his new puppy. Once she was done speaking, she smiled tiredly and led them to the back. Dogs were yipping and barking in their cages. A lot of them sounded lonely. Some didn’t even get up to greet them when they walked by.Adam’s father walked beside him, sending a critical eye at the papers hanging on the cages that explained the breeds, the medical issues with the dogs, and the ages of the dogs. He shook his head when he saw a few of them.

“It’s heartbreaking. Someone got these dogs, loved them, and then moved on without them. People get divorced; lose their houses, move away, or just get too busy for them. The dogs suffer for people’s mistakes.” His father sighed.“We won’t make that mistake.” Adam promised.“No, we won’t. Once we choose one, it’s part of our family. Family doesn’t throw away family. We didn’t toss grandpa out when he was sick. We took care of him until the end.”Adam nodded. He remembered helping grandpa a lot, just little things mostly, but he had been part of their family. Thinking about grandpa, he saw a small dog with sad brown eyes and big whiskers that reminded him of his grandfather.

“How about that one?” Adam suggested, reading the name tag. It said, “Walnuts.”His father read the papers hanging on the clipboard next to the nametag. “He’s three years old, healthy, and housetrained. Your mother will be pleased about that last part. It says that he likes to chew stuff, so we’ll have to train him what’s off limits.”“He looks like grandpa.” Adam’s father laughed. “I can see that. Your grandpa would have probably been yelling if he heard us say that, but I can see that.”They met with the dog in the private room, and it was love at first sight and at first play. Adam took Walnuts home that afternoon. Mom loved him right away, too. Adam was responsible for Walnuts for the rest of the dog’s life. He took care of his dog and even took him off to college with him.

Achoo! by Cynthia Sherwood

Achoo! We all sneeze sometimes. Sneezing is a reflex that your body does automatically. That means you cannot make yourself sneeze or stop one once it has started. When you sneeze, your body is trying to get rid of bad things in your nose, such as bacteria. You have extra germs when you have a cold, so yousneeze a lot more. You might also sneeze when you smell pepper!

Inside your nose, there are hundreds of tiny hairs. These hairs filter the air you breathe. Sometimes dust and pollen find their way through these hairs and bother your nasal passages. The nerves in the lining of your nose tell your brain that something is invading your body.

Your brain, lungs, nose, mouth, and the muscles of your upper body work together to blow away the invaders with a sneeze. When you sneeze, germs from your nose get blown into the air. Using a tissue or “sneezing into your sleeve” captures most of these germs. It is very important to wash your hands after you sneeze into them, especially during cold and flu season.

Do you ever sneeze when you walk into bright sunlight? Some people say that happens to them often. Scientists believe the UV rays of the sun irritate the nose lining of these people so they sneeze.

If someone nearby sneezes, remember to tell them “Gesundheit!” That is a funny-looking word which is pronounced “gezz-oont-hite.” It is the German word that wishes someone good health after sneezing.

1. Which parts of your body work together when you sneeze?

A) Brain, lungs, nose, mouth and upper body muscles.B) Brain, arms, teeth and tongue.C) Face, legs, chest and ears.D) Nose, mouth, eyes and stomach.

2. What does the German word Gesundheit mean?

A) I wish you God’s blessings.B) I wish you a good day.

A) Scientists believe that UV rays of the sun not irritate the nose lining of these people so they sneeze.B) Scientists believe the UV rays of the sun irritate the nose lining of these people so they sneeze.C) Scientists believe D) Some people say that never happens to them.

4. People sneeze because…

A) they want to do it.B) your body is trying to get rid of bad things in your nose, such as bacteria.C) they don’t wash your hands.D) they smell salt.

A Trip to the Eye Doctor Story By: Judie Eberhardt

Tammy came home from school one day with a note from her teacher, Ms. Jones. The note said, “Tammy is having trouble seeing the board.” “Maybe Tammy needs to have her eyes examined.” After mom read the note, she asked Tammy how long had it been since she was having trouble seeing the board. Tammy said, “I think it’s been about a month.” “Why haven’t you said anything?” Mom asked. “I’m calling Dr. Gray and making an appointment for you tomorrow after school,” said Mom. Tammy went to her room and began to worry. I don’t want to wear glasses, Tammy thought. She was afraid the girls at school would make fun of her. That night Tammy tossed and turned and did not sleep.

The next morning Mom said, “Don’t forget we are going to see Dr. Gray after school today.” Tammy said, “I don’t feel well.” “Maybe I should stay home from school.” “Oh no,” said Mom. “You are not going to try to get out of going to the eye doctor.”

Mom picked Tammy up after school and went to Dr. Gray’s office. When Tammy went in to see the doctor, she was so nervous. The doctor told her and her Mom that Tammy was having trouble seeing things from far away. She explained to Tammy that she would need to pick out some glasses to help her see well. Tammy’s face showed a huge frown. “What’s wrong?” asked Dr. Gray. “I

Tammy and Dr. Gray found some brown and black glasses like hers. Tammy put them on and read from far away for Dr. Gray. “Everything looks so clear!” said Tammy. “I really like my new glasses.” Tammy went to school the next day and put her glasses on to read the board. She expected the girls to laugh at her, but the girls said, “Tammy your glasses are so cool!” “I wish I had glasses,” said Heather. “Me too,” said Susan. Getting Shots Story By: Andrew Frinkle

Gary winced as he saw his brother get a shot in the arm. Shots were horrible things. They always brought out the largest needle they could find, and then they pumped you full of goo that made your arm hurt for three or four days. Shots were nearly as bad as getting blood drawn. Gross!

“Why do we need to get shots?” He wondered aloud as the nurse prepared his injection, setting it out carefully on a tray. She smiled. “That’s a common question.” She squirted a little bit of the injection out into the air.Gary shuddered. “So? What’s the answer then?”

She tapped the syringe. “These are vaccines in here. They prevent serious illnesses.” “How?” Gary wasn’t impressed yet.The nurse smiled. “Here’s how: vaccines contain weakened forms or dead forms of the viruses. When they are put into your body, your immune system reacts and goes into defensive mode.”

“What does that mean?”“Well, your body makes special soldiers called antibodies to attack the viruses. The problem with antibodies is that they are designed to fight just a single type of virus. So, antibodies can’t help with every illness.”“That seems silly.”

“It might, but they’re like machines that do one job really good, instead of a lot of jobs just sort of well. Anyway, once you have antibodies for a certain illness in you, there are always a few waiting on the benches to get called into duty if that disease tries to attack.”

“So getting shots makes antibodies which keep me safe from a disease.” Gary summarized.

Page 39: Booklet Two.docx  · Web viewAre Salinas. The Salinas. 10. What's her occupation? ... Nice neighborhood.1 bedroom, ... He was wearing a cap, ...

“Yes, and you have many kinds of antibodies in your immune system. All these shots you get over the years add up. They protect you from all the worst diseases around. Sadly, you have to get the shots to make it work. That’s the trade-off.”“I guess that’s not too bad of a price.”“It’s a few days’ soreness to make you safe for a lifetime.”

SHOPPING IN LONDON.

John tells us about his favorite places for shopping in London. When I visit London one of my favorite things do to is shopping! I really enjoy searching for a bargain in the sales, and buying something new to wear on a Saturday night. I also like doing window-shopping. It’s nice and it doesn’t cost a penny! Sometimes I spend hours just walking around a market and having a chat with my friends.

There are lots of different places to go shopping in London. One of the most famous places is Oxford Street, but be careful, it gets too busy sometimes. If you want a more relaxing shopping experience, go to Covent Garden. There you can have a cappuccino, and watch some street theatre at the same time.

Some people like shopping in department stores. The most famous one is London is “Harrods” in Knightsbridge, but for me, it’s not modern enough, and it’s too expensive. The best of all the big department stores is “Selfridges” in Oxford Street. It’s a shoppers’ paradise, nice clothes, and the prices? Well, at least I can look, can’t I?

If you go to London, you can’t miss Camden Street Markets. It’s busy exciting, trendy, and there are lots of bargains! You can buy cheap jeans and cool second-hand clothes in the morning and then get a tattoo and a body piercing later on! And when you get tired of shopping, you can get some Chinese food for $2 pounds or $3 pounds, sit by the canal and drink a coke. What could be better?

1. According to the text…A) Window-shopping is free/very expensive.B) One of the most famous places to go shopping in London is Hyde Park/Oxford Street.C) Harrods is too expensive/not very expensive.D) In Camden Town you can buy new clothes/used clothes.

HOW MUCH?

Jane was at the gift shop near the exit of a theme park. She’d spent all day playing, eating snacks, and drinking sodas. Now, it was time to spend the last of her allowance on a few nice things to take home with her. If she had money left over, maybe she’d even go ahead and buy something small for her little sister.

Jane looked over the items on the shelves. There were so many cute things! There were hats with her favorite characters on them, plush dolls from the coolest movies, and all sorts of pretty jewelry items, too. Maybe she’d get her sister a pencil or a keychain, but that was only if she had enough money. She sighed. “There are so many things, but so little money”.She only had twenty dollars left, which seemed like a lot to her, but she didn’t see much in the store for less than seven dollars, and those were small items. What could she get her sister? There it was. Her sister’s favorite character was a pink lizard with goofy eyes. It was from “A Lizard’s Tail”. Jane looked at the price of Pokey the Pink Lizard. It was $6.95. “About seven dollars”, she said, “that gives me thirteen more dollars for myself”.

It didn’t take her long to find two more things she liked, a keychain for $5.95, making about thirteen dollars, and then a pen set for $6.95, making it twenty. Very pleased with herself, she took her purchases up to the counter and waited in line. Adults and other children were standing nearby, and she thought they were a little envious of how well she’d shopped, but maybe she was just imagining things.

When it was her turn, she put the three items on the counter and waited for the cashier, a kindly old man, to scan the three items in and hit the total button. “That will be $ 21.04”. The old man announced. A strange, sinking sensation ran through Jane’s gut. “Twenty-one dollars? I added, and it should be twenty.”“Plus 6% sales tax.” He informed her helpfully.

Page 47: Booklet Two.docx  · Web viewAre Salinas. The Salinas. 10. What's her occupation? ... Nice neighborhood.1 bedroom, ... He was wearing a cap, ...

“But I only have twenty, and….” She pulled a quarter, a few nickels, and a dime from her pocket.

“You’re still sixty-four cents short. Would you like to put back one of your selections?” Hearing that was like a punch in the face. “No, I want them for twenty dollars.”The man glanced around the store to see no one else in line and sighed. He dug a pen set out of the drawer. One pen was missing. “I can give you this pen set for a dollar off. It’s missing one pen.”“Deal!” Jane said excitedly. The Closet CreatureBy Kelly Hashway

Bump! Bump! Scratch!Adam opened his eyes and pulled the covers up to his chin. He stared around his room, searching the darkness for the thing that was making those scary sounds. The closet door moved as something banged on it from the inside.“Who’s there?” Adam asked in a shaky voice.

The closet slowly began to open. Adam jumped out of bed and ran to the closet door, slamming it shut with his palms. He grabbed his desk chair and propped it against the door handle. Then he ran out of his room and down the hall. His brother’s door was wide open, and Adam jumped onto David’s bed.“Adam?” David asked in a groggy voice. “What are you doing in here?”Adam tugged on David’s arm. “There’s something in my closet!”“You probably had a bad dream. Go back to bed.”Adam yanked the blankets off the bed. “It wasn’t a dream. I was awake, and the closet door starting opening by itself!”David sighed. “Fine. But when we don’t find anything, you have to promise to leave me alone for the rest of the night.”

Adam nodded. David reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a flashlight. Then they headed to Adam’s room.Adam stopped in the doorway. He could hear something scratching his closet door.“Do you hear that?” Adam asked.David nodded. He walked over to Adam’s bed and pulled the case off one of the pillows. He opened the pillowcase.“You open the door very slowly, and I’ll grab whatever it is.”Adam slid the chair to the side and pulled the closet door open a crack. Something banged against the door, trying to force it open. Adam took a deep breath and opened the door a few more inches. A small furry creature ran right into the pillowcase.“I got it!” David said, closing the pillowcase and holding it in the air.“What is it?” Adam moved closer as David peeked inside.David put the pillowcase on the bed and an orange cat climbed out.Adam scooped the cat up. “Apricot? How did you get trapped in my closet?”David laughed. “The poor cat. If I was locked in your closet with your stinky shoes, I’d be banging on the door to get out, too!”“Poor, Apricot,” Adam said. “You were probably more scared than I was.”

Foggy FigureBy Kelly Hashway

Justin and Mary woke up early, even though they were vacationing at their uncle’s lake house. The night before, Uncle Thomas told them about the Foggy Figure that haunts the lake. Justin and Mary were determined to see the ghostly creature before their vacation was over.“Is it foggy outside?” Mary asked, as Justin peered out the window.“Yup! Let’s go!” Justin let go of the curtain and rushed to the door with Mary on his heels. It was only 5:00AM, so everyone else in the house was still asleep. As they crept through the kitchen to the back door, Mary sniffed the air. It had the faint scent of coffee and something sweet. She shrugged it off and followed Justin out the door, down the back steps, and out onto the boat dock. The fog had settled over the lake, making it impossible to see anything.“Do you see anything?” Mary asked, leaning forward for a closer look. “Nothing. Do you think Uncle Thomas was just trying to scare us with that story?”Uncle Thomas did have a good imagination. He’d been telling Justin and Mary stories for years, but this was the first scary story. Mary had a feeling it wasn’t made up.Mary shook her head. “Remember what Uncle Thomas said? The Foggy Figure haunts the lake. We’re on the dock. Maybe that’s why we can’t see him. The people in the story were in boats.”“You want to go out on the water?” Justin asked.Mary looked around; trying to find Uncle Thomas’s boat, but the fog was too thick.

“Mom and Dad will be really angry if we go out on the lake alone in this fog,” Justin said.

Page 63: Booklet Two.docx  · Web viewAre Salinas. The Salinas. 10. What's her occupation? ... Nice neighborhood.1 bedroom, ... He was wearing a cap, ...

Mary shrugged. “Maybe we don’t have to go anywhere. We could sit in the boat while it’s docked. That wouldn’t be dangerous.”“Okay.” Justin crept toward the end of the dock. He could barely see the outline of the boat. “I’ll go first.” He carefully lowered himself into the boat and then reached for Mary’s hand.Mary climbed into the boat and sat beside him. She was getting nervous now that they were on the water. “See anything?”They looked around, and gradually, the fog began to lift. Mary turned around and screamed. “The Foggy Figure!” It was in the boat with them!Justin and Mary hugged each other in fear, but then they heard a laugh. Justin leaned toward the Foggy Figure. “Uncle Thomas?”“I knew that story would get you two out of bed early enough to take a boat ride with me.”Mary sighed, happy there was no Foggy Figure after all. Justin looked relieved, too.Uncle Thomas laughed. “What do you say? I packed a breakfast for us.”Mary smiled. She had smelled coffee. And Uncle Thomas had packed pastries for them, too.“Let’s do it,” Mary and Justin said.

When I woke up this morning, I found my dog, Fox, waiting for me. He wanted me to take him for a walk. I was too hungry, so first I had breakfast. I had a glass of milk and a piece of toast. Then I washed my teeth and put on a track-suit and a heavy coat, because it was really cold outside. Fox was already impatient. We both went out, and walked to the park near home. “Ana Finds an Apartment”

Ana, her husband Mario, and their four-year-old son, Antonio, just moved to North Carolina. They need a temporary place to call home until they get settled into their new surroundings. Right now, they are staying in a hotel not far from Mario’s job. Ana begins a search for an apartment for the family to live in. First, Ana picks up an Apartment Book at the local newspaper stand. The Apartment Book contains listings of all the major apartment complexes in her area. Ana starts by looking at the prices for apartments in the Apartment Book. Then, she reads about the amenities that each apartment complex offers. For example, some apartments have a clubhouse. Some have a gym, which is also called a fitness center. Some have a pool. She wants the family’s new apartment to be nice, but she does not want to spend too much money on it. Ana and Mario are trying to save money to buy a house. After considering prices, amenities, and locations, Ana finds several apartment complexes that she thinks the family will like. Ana calls the apartment complexes. She sets up appointments with the apartment managers to see the apartments she thinks are interesting. Ana makes five phone calls in total. When Mario gets back to the hotel from work, Ana shows him the list of apartments. “These look good,” he says.
