This international conference (ICPAM 2014) and workshop (IWRERP2014) has provided a platform to publish this booklet in the midst of his students. We feel that this is the appropriate time to felicitate our professor by bringing all his students between the two covers of this booklet. This booklet will serve as a memory to one and all and provides us a means to connect wherever we may go.

Prof. Anil K. Bhowmick is a Professor of Eminence and former Head of Rubber Technology Centre and former Dean of Postgraduate Studies and former Dean (Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy), IIT Kharagpur. He was also a foreign students’ advisor of the institute. He was previously associated with the University of Akron, Ohio, USA, London School of Polymer Technology, London and Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. His main research interests are: Thermoplastic Elastomers and Polymer blends, Nanocomposites, Polymer modification, Rubber Technology, Failure and Degradation of Polymers, Adhesion and Adhesives. He has more than five hundred publications in these fields, 35 book chapters and seven co-edited books. He was also co-editor of the special issue of Polymer and Composite Characterization of the Journal of Macromolecular Science (USA). He was the 2002 winner of the “Chemistry of Thermoplastic Elastomers” award and 1997 winner of the “George Stafford Whitby” award of the Rubber Division, American Chemical Society for innovative research, and 2001 K.M. Philip award of the All India Rubber Industries Association for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of rubber industries in India. He was also awarded NOCIL award 1991, JSPS award 1990, Commonwealth award

1990, MRF award 1989 and Stanton-Redcroft ITAS award 1989. He is on the Editorial Board of Journal of Adhesion Science & Technology (USA), Journal of Applied Polymer Science (USA), Journal of Materials Science (USA), Polymers and Polymer Composites (UK), Rubber Chemistry and Technology (USA), Polymer for Advanced Technologies (Germany) and Natural Rubber Research (India). He holds twelve patents including one US and one German patents. He brought many projects to the institute and developed many indigenous items for the country. He has guided forty two Ph.D. students and many masters’ and post-doctoral students. He is a Fellow of National Academy of Engineering, Indian National Science Academy and W.B. Academy of Science and Technology.

He is currently the founding director of IIT Patna.

Professor Bhowmick is another face of perfec-tion. From preparing an “envelop of a letter “ to dealing with a critical situation in a disciplined way, he has no other contender. While he is strict regarding work, however, at the same time, he is very encouraging, caring and concerned other-wise. In him I got to find an excellent teacher, a perfect guide who showed the proper way to life and a really good friend with whom I shared my happiness and sadness. Sir, thank you so much for infusing within me the confidence of being what I am today and what I am doing today.

I feel proud and happy to be one of Prof. Bhowmick’s research students, who encouraged me to do atomic force microscopy way back in 2001, and ours was one of the very early papers on AFM of rubber composites. This shows how he is thinking ahead in his research topics and how he is caring his students. Rubber Technology Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, is the epicentre of research in elastomer field in India where I began my journey in 1986 with Prof Bhowmick as one of his first PhD student funded by a DST project. In the midst of all leading scientists there, I was in a world of complete immersion, constant discussions and engagement in science. I recall Dr. Bhowmick - a very hands on and self-effacing person- always found time to conduct research in the lab. A man of principles and a superb scientist, he always remained engaged with his students and was very supportive of his researchers.

An eminent scientist in the field, he pioneered many innovations in elastomer research. Re-search is always a central part of his life, and that is the secret of his success. This passion for research has rewarded him with many chal-lenging roles including his current role, and also the community with many profound long lasting outcomes. Thank you Prof Bhowmick for all your support and inspiration during my study. I believe many of your students have floated their research boats like me with you for a journey to know the unknown and have seen the impact of it.

After my Ph.D. and a postdoctoral fellowship in Japan, I decided to work with Prof Bhowmick at IIT Patna as a postdoctoral research associate in 2010. I was working in IIT Patna from 2010-2012. During this period I got an opportunity to interact with him while conducting respon-sibilities like Laboratory Start-up activities for Polymer Engineering Laboratory and Materials Research Laboratory & management, research and teaching activities which led to significant gains in my professional experiences. It was a great opportunity for me to learn various aspects of academics through my interaction with him which complemented my training abroad. Prof Bhowmick is a versatile researcher with thorough knowledge base who can inspire and motivate creative independent thinkers. He possess great leadership qualities to move any hurdles ahead.
