• Born in Hale’s Ford Virginia, 1856
• Born into slavery
• Had a white father whom he knew little about

• His family gained freedom in 1865 as the Civil War ended
• Worked in Salt Furnaces and Coal Mines early in life
• Attended Hampton Institute, established to educate freedmen
• Then attended Wayland Seminary to complete preparation as an instructor
• In 1881, became the first leader of the Tuskegee Institute, the new teachers college in
Alabama for the rest of his life and career (Tuskegee University Now)
