From Outdoor LifeTwo Pieces for String Orchestra“From Outdoor Life” is in two stylistically contrasting movements, which provide pedagogical opportunities to explore a variety of articulations. The music is highly tuneful, based on a chromatic tonal palate. The movements are not overtly programmatic, but are clearly inspired by the western American landscape. The thematically and technically interesting content is well-distrib-uted among each of the string parts. The technical demands lie at or below the Grade 4 level.

BYRON ADAMS

Serenade in A MajorI have sought to honor the great Czech-American composer Karel Husa, my composition teacher at Cornell University, by paying an affectionate tribute to his music in particular and Czech music in general. To make my aim explicit, I have quoted two traditional Czech songs that Husa has used in his own music, as well as the opening bars of Smetana’s Má vlast. Finally, I sought to craft a score filled with lyricism, charm, and gen-tle wit, but leavened by an occasional touch of melancholy. —Byron Adams Instrumentation: Small Orchestra (Flute, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Strings 6-6-4-4-2) Duration: 22:00

In paradisum from Requiem SongsSoprano Solo or Unison Treble Chorus, Violin, Harp, and Organ or String Orchestra

The third song of Requiem Songs introduces the harp. The soprano melody is modeled very closely on the Gregorian chant based on this text. This song is consciously inspired in part by Fauré’s setting of the same text and also the Lux æternam of Nadia Boulanger. The song is in the radiant and serene key of F-sharp major, and almost completely diatonic. A gentle climax occurs on the text “habeas eternam,” and the song slowly winds down to its end, having laid to rest life’s struggles in the eternity of heaven. Duration: 4:00

Psalm 114Congregation, Cantor, SATB Chorus, Organ, and opt. Handbells

This beautiful psalm is a prayer asking God to guide us and to grant us freedom. It is filled with references to Biblical themes, such as the Israelites being freed from Egypt and God making them a “holy nation” (Exodus). Given the high number of refugees of many backgrounds in our modern world, this psalm speaks to us today, offering hope through prayer.
