American psychologist Jonathan Kellerman is one of the world’s most popular thriller authors. He has written over thirty novels, including stand-alone thrillers, children’s books and the bestselling Alex Dela-ware books, the very successful L.A. based crime series featuring child psychologist Alex Delaware.

Last month Headline published Evidence, Jonathan Kellerman’s 24th Alex Delaware novel. The author talks

to Book News about this latest creation, his hero Alex and his inspiration.

Evidence is Kellerman’s 24th thriller featuring psychologist Alex Delaware which makes him one of the longest running characters in crime fi ction.

Jonathan Kellerman: “Hard to believe he’s been getting into trouble for so long! Fortunately, unlike his creator, he doesn’t age in real-time. Alex arose out of my desire to - duh – Write What I Know. Since I was working as a clinical psychologist and psychology seemed a natural interface with crime detection. Since I detest books where amateurs show up the cops, I created Milo Sturgis as the professional anchor. “Kellerman writes the series so that the books can be read in

any order. Some people prefer to start at the beginning, but it’s really not necessary. The author says not to have favorites but is always partial to the most recent. So he advises to start with Evidence.

Even after writing over 30 inter-national bestsellers in the past 25 years, Kellerman isn’t suff ering from writer’s block. The love for the job keeps him inspired and motivated in his daily writing: “I love my job – almost everything about it. That includes the nice feedback I receive from readers, new and longstanding. Writing’s a great gig but it is rather isolat-ing, so it’s always a pleasure hear-ing what people like about your books. That said, my primary goal is to write the type of book I’d like to read. In terms of writer’s block, though I am sympathetic, I fi nd myself chuckling, recalling Robert B. Parker’s comment on the subject: something along the lines of ‘When you call someone to fi x your sink, he doesn’t say ‘Can’t come, I’ve got plumber’s block.”

It took Kellerman quite a while and some rejections to get his fi rst book, When the Bough Breaks, published in 1985. Asked for any tips for the aspiring crime author he answers: “My days as a psychologist taught me that free advice is worth what you pay. Writing’s such a personal thing and my feeling is that true writers are born to write, driven to continue even in the face of frustration. So if someone needs prodding, mentoring, etc, they should probably take up another line of work. Maybe plumbing.”

Inspired by (crime) authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Ross McDonald, Kellerman doesn’t want to compose lists of favorite

new authors as someone is bound to be left off . “Mostly, I read non-fi ction, as fi ction can be distracting while I’m working on a novel. Which is just about always.”

Psychologist Jonathan Kellerman has a few words of wisdom on why people love to read about crimes and evil: “The good ones represent the best of fi ction: strong characterization, robust story, something important to say about good and evil. I was reading an article a few months back, about some pretentious jerk who has a snooty radio show about books. (Who’d never actually written one.) He doesn’t like crime novels because they answer questions rather than leave them open-ended. Now, none of us appreciate pat endings but why not attempt to actually solve some problems rather than leave the reader with chaos, uncertainty, corruption, and disorganization? If I was out for all of that, I’d be a politician, not a novelist.”

Praise for Jonathan Kellerman’s work:

‘Kellerman has created a sympathetic and engaging character.’ – the Times

‘When it comes to psychological or even psychopathic themes JK leads the pack - partly because he is a clinical psychologist and partly because he is a damn good writer.’ – Guardian

‘Often mystery writers can either plot like devils or create believable characters. Kellerman stands out because he can do both. Masterfully’ – USA Today

‘When they’re this good, it’s impossible to get enough.’– Mirror

Early one morning a foreman shows up at the building site of a mega-mansion in one of L.A.’s most luxurious neighborhoods. Proceeding up unfi nished plank steps, he arrives at the master bedroom. There, lying on a blanket, are a man and a woman in a lover’s embrace, stabbed and bludgeoned to death. Who are the lovers? Why have they chosen a construction

site for their late-night tryst. Is the double murder simply a horrifi c example of wrong-place, wrong-time? Or were the victims stalked? And will the outrage be repeated?

Alex and his friend, LAPD detective, Milo Sturgis are called in and as they struggle to make their way through the alternative universe that is the

domain of the impossibly rich, they discover a scheme rooted in deception and evil beyond even their imaginations.

David Baldacci is the acclaimed author of fi fteen previous consecutive New York Times bestsellers. With his books published in over 40 languages in more than 80 countries, and with nearly 70 million copies in print, he is one of the world’s favourite storytellers.

True Blue is the start of an exciting new series for Baldacci, featuring an unjustly interned detective and her police chief sister. Mr Baldacci tells Book News about his latest creation:

Your latest novel True Blue introduces two new main characters, Mason Perry and Roy Kingman. Could you tell us more about them? And will there be more novels with this duo?“Mace was an undercover cop who was framed and went to prison. Her sister Beth is the

D.C. Chief of Police. Mace is a real fi rebrand maverick, used to going her own way. All she wants to be is a cop and now, as a convicted felon, she can’t be. She is tough as nails and has a personality that will never give up. She comes back to D.C. hoping to prove her innocence and become a cop once more.

Roy Kingman is a young lawyer and former basketball player. He’s spent his early career defending people who couldn’t aff ord an attorney. Now he gets paid big bucks to represent very wealthy clients. He fi nds his law partner murdered and that’s how he and Mace meet. There will defi nitely be more novels with these characters, especially Mace and Beth.”

Your worldwide popularity is partly due to your very fast-paced, complex plots. How do you achieve those?“Sweat equity. There is no formula. You just have to imagine each and every scenario and then write it as vividly as possible and make sure that in the end it all makes sense and keeping ahead of millions of readers hoping to fi gure it all out before you want

them to. No pressure, right? But I’m a very curious person who craves knowledge and information on many subjects. That is very helpful when you’re putting together complex plots covering myriad subjects.”

You write two new bestselling thrillers each year. How do you keep inspired?“I love to tell stories. Doing two a year is tough. I will never go the route where I hire other writers to write my books and then slap my name on them. That’s a cheat to the writer and the reader. After so many novels I still get tremendously excited with another blank piece of paper. This is obviously what I was meant to do with my life.”

Peter James combines a talent for fi endishly clever crime plotting with a deep interest in the world of police, science, medicine and the paranormal.

In Dead Tomorrow, the fi fth novel featuring Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, Brighton Police Force discovers three bodies off the

coast of Sussex, all missing vital organs. As Grace investigates the recovered bodies, he unearths the trail of a gang of child trafi ickers from Eastern Europe. Soon Grace and his team will fi nd themselves in a race against time to save the life of a young street kid, while a mother will stop at nothing to save her terminally ill daughter’s life . .

One hot date. One brutal abduction. One hell of a morning after...

The idea for his new novel, Target, came suddenly to Simon Kernick, and quite unexpectedly: “I woke up one night, alone and in an unfamiliar hotel room, and for some reason the fi rst thought that shot into my head was what would I do if I witnessed the kidnapping of someone who I’d only just met, while I was in their house, but out of sight of the kidnappers?

Would I intervene? Would I wait for an opportune moment and

call the police? Or would I pre-tend that it hadn’t happened -forget about it even - particular-ly if no one believed my story?

I like to think I’d intervene. But then again, maybe I wouldn’t. Either way, I couldn’t stop thinking about this scenario, and the implications involved. And as I turned it over in my mind, a story began to develop. I was working on another book at the time, but because this one seemed so full of potential, I began to work on it instead. And here it is: the story of an ordinary guy on a normal night out, who fi nds himself thrust into the centre of a dangerous criminal conspiracy, and who ends up risking his reputation, and then his life, to fi nd a girl he hardly knows.”

One of America’s greatest novelists dazzlingly reinvents the coming-of-age story in his most passionate and surprising book to date

Sinuously constructed in four interlocking parts, Paul Auster’s fi fteenth novel opens in New York City in the spring of 1967, when twenty-year-old Adam Walker, an aspiring poet and student at Columbia University, meets the enigmatic Frenchman Rudolf Born and his silent and seductive girfriend, Margot. Before long, Walker fi nds himself caught in a perverse triangle that leads to a sudden, shocking act of violence that will alter the course of his life.

Three diff erent narrators tell the story of Invisible, a novel that travels in time from 1967 to 2007 and moves from Morningside Heights, to the Left Bank of Paris, to a remote island in the Caribbean.

Although Auster himself was a twenty-year-old student at

Colombia in 1967, the novel is not autobiographical as such but mirrors the things that happened to him and the naivety and the intensity with which he set out discovering the world and discovering his own identity.

Invisible is a book of youthful rage, unbridled sexual hunger, and a relentless quest for justice. With uncompromising insight, Auster takes his reader into the shadowy borderland between truth and memory, between authorship and identity, to produce a work of unforgettable power that confi rms his reputation as “one of America’s most spectacularly inventive writers.”

Praise for Man in the Dark: ‘Man in the Dark is an undoubted pleasure to read. Auster really does possess the wand of the enchanter.’– The New York Review of Books

She’s always lived in the here and now, never giving a second thought to tomorrow.

But then suddenly her dad is gone and life for Tamara and her mother changes forever. Nestled next to Kilsaney Castle, their gate house is a world away from her childhood and Tama-ra, lonely and bored, longs to return to Dublin.

When a travelling library passes through Kilsaney Demesne, Ta-mara is intrigued. She needs a distraction. Her eyes rest on a mysterious large leather bound tome locked with a gold clasp and padlock.

Tamara fi nally manages to open the book. What she dis-covers within the pages takes

her breath away and shakes her world to its core.

Written in Cecelia’s unique style, blending a good story and down-to-earth heroines with plenty of laughs, tears and a little magic, The Book of Tomorrow is a mesmerizing tale of seeing the future laid out before you.

Before embarking on her writing career, Cecelia Ahern completed a degree in journalism and media studies. Her fi rst novel, PS, I Love You was one of the biggest-sell-ing debut novels of 2004 and a number one bestseller. Her other bestselling novels include Thanks for the Memories and The Gift, now available in paperback.

“ I feel an echo of the lightning each time I

fi nd a fossil, a little jolt that says, “Yes, Mary

Anning, you are diff er-ent from all the rocks on the beach.” That is why I am a hunter: to feel that bolt of light-ning, and that diff er-

ence, every day.”

Remarkable Creatures is Tracy Chevalier’s stun-ning new novel of how one woman’s gift tran-scends class and gender to lead to some of the most important discov-eries of the nineteenth century. Above all, it is a revealing portrait of the intricate and resil-ient nature of female friendship.

Tracy Chevalier, well known for her clever use of historical fi gures, fi rst heard of Mary Anning, who the Natural His-tory Museum claim to be “the most important fossil-hunter of all time”, during a trip with her son to a small dinosaur museum in Dorchester. She was enthralled by the idea of a poor, working class girl with an eye for fi nding fossils who started selling her discover-ies to the middle classes as a means to an end but ended up turning it into a thriving business.

Tracy describes Mary Anning as “a prickly, independent, prim and eccentric woman” who survived being struck by lightning as a baby which eligibly turned her from “a le-thargic baby in to a lively and intelligent one”.Tracy was fascinated by the unlikely friendship Mary

forged with educated, up-per class spinster Elizabeth Philpot, who herself now has a museum named after her, and how Elizabeth’s intelligence and sophistication counterbal-anced Mary’s rawness.

Having undergone some “on the job training”, Tracy de-scribes herself as an ‘amateur fossil-hunter’. During the hours spent scouring the beach of isolated and mysteri-ous Lyme Regis she says she learnt the “skill of patience” and the joy of discovery on fi nding fossils.

In Remarkable Creatures Tracy skilfully weaves together fact and fi ction to tell the story of how Elizabeth and Mary’s shared passion for fossil-hunt-ing and their discoveries man-aged to infl uence the work of Darwin and many other scholars of the time, to defi ne the age of the earth, introduce the concept of extinction and, not least, to pose a threat to the Creationist theory.

‘Chevalier recently stated that making fossils sexy was one of her chief aims in writing Remark-able Creatures. With this very en-tertaining book, she has certainly succeeded’ – Telegraph

Blinded by ambition. Seduced by Power. Destroyed by Rome. The wait is over… Robert Harris is back with a page-turning thriller. Meticulously researched and brilliantly written, Lustrum is an entirely self-contained novel, but it is also a continuation of Cicero’s story as told in Robert Harris’ bestselling Imperium. A third Roman volume will complete the trilogy in 2011. In a city on the brink of acquiring a vast empire, seven men are struggling for power. Cicero is consul, Caesar his ruthless young rival, Pompey the republic’s greatest general, Crassus its richest man, Cato a political fanatic, Catilina a psychopath, Clodius an ambitious playboy.

The stories of these real historical fi gures – their alliances and betrayals, their cruelties and seductions, their brilliance and their crimes – are all interleaved to form this epic novel. Its narrator is Tiro, a slave who serves as confi dential secretary to the wily, humane, complex Cicero. He knows all his

master’s secrets – a dangerous position to be in. From the discovery of a child’s mutilated body, through judicial execution and a scandalous trial, to the brutal unleashing of the Roman mob, Lustrum is a study in the timeless enticements and horrors of power.

Internationally acclaimed for his storytelling power and historical accuracy, Robert Harris will not disappoint his fans with this new book and will no doubt entice a new readership to discover his talents.

Robert Harris is the author of Fatherland, Enigma, Archangel, Pompeii, Imperium and The Ghost all of which were inter-national bestsellers. His work has been translated into thirty-seven languages.

After graduating with a degree in English from Cambridge University, he worked as a reporter for the BBC’s Panorama and Newsnight programmes, before becoming political editor of the Observer and subsequently a columnist on the Sunday Times and the Daily Telegraph.

The Whitney women of Salem, Massachusetts are renowned for reading the future in the patterns of lace. But the future doesn’t always bring good news – as Towner Whitney knows all too well. When she was just fi fteen her gift sent her whole world crashing to pieces. She predicted – and then witnessed – something so horrifi c that she vowed never to read lace again, and fl ed her home and family for good. Salem is a place of ghosts for Towner, and she swore she would never return.

Yet family is a powerful tie. So it is that fi fteen years later, Towner fi nds herself back in Salem. Her beloved Great Aunt Eva has suddenly disappeared – and when you’ve lived a life like Eva’s, that could mean real trouble. But Salem is wreathed in sickly shadows and whispered half-memories. It’s fast becoming clear that the ghosts of Towner’s fractured past have not been brought fully into the light. And with them comes the threat of terrifying new disaster. Inspired by a dream about an antique piece of lace Brunonia Barry was once given by her grandmother, The Lace Reader was originally self-published. Embraced by local Salem booksellers, the book was soon discovered by an American agent and within months it was on the New York Times Bestseller List.

Written with burning inten-sity in the last years of his life, 2666 has been greeted across the world as Roberto Bolaño’s masterpiece, surpassing everything in imagination, beauty and scope. 2666 is set in a fi ctional city on the US-Mexican border, spanning a twentieth century of corrup-tion, violence and decadence.

Hair-raising and enthralling, Amulet is another brilliant example of Roberto Bolaño’s art.

It is September 1968 and the Mexican student movement is about to run head-on into the repressive right-wing gov-ernment of Mexico: hundreds of young people will soon die.

When the army invades the university, one woman hides in a fourth-fl oor ladies’ room and for twelve days she is the only person left on campus. Staring at the fl oor, she recounts her bohemian life among the young poets of Mexico City–inventing and reinventing freely–and along the way she creates a cosmol-ogy of literature.

As they grow ever more hal-lucinatory, her “memories” become mythologies before completely transforming into riveting dark prophecies. Amulet is a highly charged and heart-breaking novel that embodies the violent recent history of Latin America.

Fans in The Netherlands are just now discovering the Young Adult fantasy series House of Night (HoN), following the adventures of sixteen year old Zoey Redbird. When Zoey gets Marked as a fl edgling vampire she must join the House of Night school where she will train to become an adult vampire. That is, if she makes it through the Change..

Could you tell us more about the Vampyre world you’ve created?I’ve created a wonderfully unique version of the vampyre mythos by basing my vampyrism on biology – thanks to my father who is a biologist. It is also a unique vision because my HoN society is matriarchal. The series was inspired by my agent, Meredith Bernstein. She said she’d like to see me write a series set at a vampyre fi nishing school. I’d been teaching high school English for more than a decade, so my mind naturally went to the YA genre, and the House of Night was born! The sixth book in the series, Tempted, was published last month. Do you have a favourite among the six books? And, will there be more?

PC: My favorite is Tempted.KC: My favorite is Chosen.

Yes, there will be more! We’recontracted for 12 HoN books.

Are there plans for screen adaptations? And if you could pick a cast, who would you prefer to play Zoey? The books have been optioned by Michael Birnbaum at Empire Pictures, though fi lming hasn’t begun. We really don’t have a cast in mind. It’s especially hard for me (PC) because I based Zoey on Kristin when she was a teenager, so all I see is a young Kristin while I write the books. I’m sure our producer will do a wonderful job choosing the cast, though!

Could you tell us something about the process of writing together with your daughter/mother? Kristin and I do a little brainstorming, and then I write the entire fi rst draft of the manuscript, making notes to Kristin in the text. Then I send the completed manuscript to Kristin and she goes through it,answering my comments and basically being sure I don’t make Zoey sound or think too old.

Kristin sends the manuscript back to me, and I go through it again before turning it in to our editor. It sounds like a long process, and it can be, but we enjoy it very much.

From New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris comes the next installment in The Sookie Stackhouse series. Anathemby Neal Stephenson

A work of astonishing scope, intelligence, and imaginationNeal Stephenson is the author of the three-volume historical epic The Baroque Cycle (Quicksilver, The Confu-sion, and The System of the World) and the novels Cryp-tonomicon, The Diamond Age, Snow Crash, and Zodiac. His latest novel, New York Times bestseller Anathem is now out in paperback.

Anathem delivers the best of Neal Stephenson: a fascina-ting far future world; complex, multi-faceted characters; and an intriguing, intellectually adventurous plot.

Since childhood, Raz has lived behind the walls of a 3,400-year-old monastery, a sanctuary for scientists, philosophers, and mathema-ticians. There, he and his co-horts are sealed off from the illiterate, irrational, and un-predictable “saecular” world, an endless landscape of ca-sinos and megastores that is plagued by recurring cycles of booms and busts, dark ages and renaissances, world wars and climate change. Until the day that a higher power, driven by fear, decides it is only these cloistered scholars who have the abilities to avert an impending catastrope. And, one by one, Raz and his friends, mentors, and teach-ers are sent forth without warning into the unknown.
