The adventurer must deal with each type of adversary in a different

way.*Adversaries from nature require the use of physical strength and speed.

*When dealing with human adversaries, the adventurer must often be smart, powerful and strongwilled.

*If the adventurer is preventing himself or herself from accomplishing the goal, he or she usually succeeds through courage and determination.

Some adventure stories revolve around a group of characters who combine their individual strengths to accomplish the goal. At the end, when the quest is complete, the characters have grown in some way and are stronger because of the trials they have endured.

Sierra grabbed the chain and pulled. She stared up at the rusty pulleys above her that showed no signs of giving in to her efforts. Determined, she reached higher on the chain, grasped it tightly, and pulled with all her might. The pulleys slowly began to turn with great rusty squeals, and the door began to rise. Water gushed through the opening, rushing toward the raging flames that threatened the town. Sierra watched as the flames were doused. Next, to keep the rushing waters from flooding the town, Sierra removed the rifle from her shoulder and carefully aimed at a large branch that held back boulders on the cliff. She squeezed the trigger, and the branch fell into the rushing water. The boulders immediately followed it, crashing down in front of the open door and stopping the flow of water. Relieved that the townspeople were safe, Sierra could continue her quest for the Golden Beetle.

MysteryA mystery is a story based on a puzzling crime.

The main character, the detective, must use common sense and intelligence to solve the crime.

Clues can be items such as fingerprints or notes, or the

witnessing of conversations or secret actions.

10

Some of the other characters in a mystery are suspects, people who may have committed the

crime.

Often the detective interviews suspects to learn who had the means,(ability) motive, (a reason) and opportunity to commit the crime

Suspense and red herrings are common elements of mysteries. A writer must capture the reader's attention and make him or her want to read on to learn the solution to the mystery. Dark and dreary settings can help add suspense to a mystery.

Red herrings, false or misleading clues, are sometimes included to direct a reader's suspicions away from the criminal toward other characters in the story who have a weak alibi or a strong motive.
