Gloria GavrisAuthor of

E is For Election Day

Inspired by her two sons and love ofelectoral politics, first time authorGloria Gavris is on a mission to builda farm team of young engagedfuture voters, one book, one child ata time. “ In 2008 and 2012 my youngsons were often asking mequestions about those presidentialcampaigns” Gavris noted. “Why areyou watching another debate? Whatis a convention?” they would ask.

“Their curiosity, the lack of civicseducation and materials inelementary school and my love forcampaign season was the perfectopportunity for me to delve intochildren’s book publishing” Gavrissaid.

E is for Election Day is a fun, engaging and educational A-to-Ztour of election season vocabulary.Paired with vibrant, child friendlyillustrations pages such as B is forBallots, C is for Conventions, D is forDebates, F is for Fundraising, G isfor Grassroots Efforts, and, mostimportantly Y is for You teaches kidsthat everyone has the power tomake a real difference in theirgovernment.

Gavris grew up in a politicallyengaged family, campaigningtogether for her brother’s Senateelection and her father’s two runs forMayor in their hometown outside ofBoston. These childhoodexperiences inspired her love forelection season and her career as alawyer and lobbyist.

As a first time author and self-publisher it was important Ipresented a credible product foreducators and librarians. I soughtout distributors to give my book anational audience and applied forand received noted awards such asthe Mom’s Choice Gold Award forAges 9-12, recognition as a TopChoice Children’s Book from theMass League of Woman Voters andKansas State Reading Circle, aswell as other regional recognitionsfrom local book festivals etc. And ofcourse I’m proud of my latestPinnacle Book Achievement Awardin the category of Children’sEducation.

“Living within a short drive to NewHampshire provided me with anopportunity to promote my children’sbook at several presidential townhalls and political events”, Gavrisnoted. As her own souvenir, Gavrishas met almost all of the majorpresidential candidates and hadthem autograph a page in her bookthat resonated with their campaign. For example Jeb Bush signed, “C isfor Convention” hoping he would bethe GOP nominee, Bernie Sanderssigned, “G is for Grassroots Efforts”a hallmark of his campaign andHillary Clinton “P for Primary Day”hoping she would win NH’s inFebruary. “It’s been a lot of fun for apolitical junkie like me”, Gavris noted.

Her favorite part however is“meeting young children andengaging them in the vocabularyand excitement of election season. My school visits are the best part ofwriting this book! The kids are veryengaged this year and theirknowledge, questions and interest isvery promising for our future” Gavrisadded. With voter apathy at an alltime high, Gavris hopes her book willengage young voters today andperhaps lead to increase voterparticipation, voting and democracyfor tomorrow.

Gavris promotes her book at variouseducator conferences such as thenational and regional Council ofSocial Studies Teachers,International Literacy groups, LibraryAssociations, Reading Associationsand GOP and DEM events, anywhere there are educators orpolitically engaged folks, she tries toattend as long as her schedule andbudget allows.

How to Get Qualified Bloggersto Review Your Bookby Amy Harrop

If you are a self-published author, yourlargest hurdle (other than finishingyour book) is promotion. The bulk ofyour readership will no doubt comefrom the internet, which is a tremen-dous market to cover.

That can seem overwhelming, butdon't worry: there are ways to reachyour target audience and distinguishyourself from the crowd. One of themis through bloggers.

Don't underestimate the power of blog-gers in eBook promotion. It's safe tosay bloggers might be among themost important assets you have inyour marketing toolkit. They'll publisha review of your book and broadcast itto their followers, expanding your mar-ket reach in ways you could never doalone.

They'll also provide those crucial firstreviews, which you'll need before youcan even begin thinking about listingyour book in the big e-publishing mar-kets like Amazon.

But how exactly to go about gettingbloggers to review your books? Thereare a few simple rules to follow, andthe rest is just good old-fashioned per-severance.

Before you start issuing review re-quests, however, read this next sec-tion carefully. It shows you how to findthe right bloggers, whose followerswould be especially interested in read-ing your book.

The trick is finding the bloggers whoseaudience matches your own. The ex-panse of the internet may seem toohuge to handle, but the good thing is:it's large but it's also capable of incred-ible specificity.

In fact, when searching for bloggers toreview your book, you should feel freeto go beyond broad book genres andgo for niches instead.

Tailor your efforts to your book's nichecategory and you'll see better results. For example, "Young Adult" is a verybroad genre. So is "fiction". For some-thing more niche, try "Young AdultDisaster Fiction". If that describes yourbook, and there are bloggers out therewith the same area of interest, youmight have made a match made inheaven!

Finding bloggers in your niche isn'tonly a good idea, it's required. Ap-proaching bloggers who don't reviewyour type of book is a dead end, not tomention very annoying for that blogger. Before making a review request, readthe blogger's review policy. If theydon't have one, you can figure it out bybrowsing his or her review history.

Here are 3 ways to find bloggers inyour niche.

Do an internet search. Your bestfriend at this point is the search engine.Type in your niche genre + "blog" andstart digging around. This is definitelytime-consuming but you'll dig up somegems if you stick with it. Find a few,and start building your list of potentialblogger-reviewers. One essential tiphere is to use the "blogroll" featurethat's found on most blogs. For you,it's an instant web of potential review-ers.

Use Twitter. If you have a Twitteraccount and you haven't built it up,start doing so now. Once you have afew thousand followers, your tweetsmay get noticed by enough people sothat you can connect with potentialreview bloggers (or better yet: custom-ers!). If your book sounds interesting, people may even ask you for a reviewcopy!

Consider Reddit. If you're an expert ina highly specific niche, chances arethere's a thread for you. Become partof that community, interact, and youmay get some like-minded bloggerson there who will review your bookvery willingly, given you're both inter-ested in the same ultra-niche topic.

Probably the biggest mistake you canmake is to send a generic requestthat's impersonal and unmemorable. You are asking a busy blogger to readyour book, so it makes sense to crafta request that not only catches the eye,but also stands out from the rest.

In other words, think of your reviewrequest as an advertisement for youreBook. The aim here is to entice theblogger to want to review your book!

You should compose a letter that in-cludes the following items:

Explain how you found the blogger.Tell why you contacted the blogger (i.e."you're a fan of ***" and "I'vewritten a book about ***")Ask politely if they'd like to take a lookat your book.If you can, offer something in return, like a guest blog post (see below*).A Thank YouA summary of your book.Links to where the blogger can readan excerpt or a chapter, if you have awebsite. Some authors even create apromotional video and post it on You-Tube

Offer to do a guest post Like you, bloggers are busy people so they of-ten welcome guest bloggers on theirsites. Offer to do a guest post (let themchoose the topic, just to be nice), andeither make it clear you'd like a reviewin return, or hit them up later oncethey've gotten to know you as a guestblogger.

Either way, it's about forming a profes-sional relationship, with an end resultthat's mutually beneficial. In fact, thatpretty much sums up what you're try-ing to do here no matter which tech-nique you try. Marketing on theinternet is about forming relationships, remember. By the way, this is a goodreminder to get those social mediaaccounts up and running!

Good luck with your review requests!

How To Write A BestsellingBook And Publish Itby Mitchelle Carson

Writing a best-selling book is a writ-er's dream. Every passionate writ-er wishes that he or she could writea book that millions of people in theworld will want to purchase. Talent-ed authors would love to have theirwritings mean something impor-tant to the readers across theglobe. Unfortunately, many peoplepossess writing talents. Millions ofpeople write books, but only ahandful of them go on to becomesuccessful authors. The followingcontains information on how to bea bestselling author and publishbestselling book.

Tip 1:Be Passionate to no End

The most important aspect of suc-ceeding at any craft is passion. The road to success will be longand bumpy. A passionate persondoes not give up at the first sign ofopposition. Instead, a passionatewriter will get up and move forwardevery time he or she falls down. That means that a bestselling writ-er will keep going if someone re-jects a manuscript or does notinvest in him or her. The personwill seek to perfect his ideas andskills.

Tip: 2:Write Something Meaningful

The next step to becoming a best-seller is writing something mean-ingful. The writer could choosefiction or non-fiction, but the sub-ject must be a subject of high inter-est among the people. The subjectof the book could explain to peoplehow they can perform a specificaction to reach a higher point intheir lives.

The book could contain an excitingfictional journey. No matter whatthe subject of the story is, it has tostand apart from all other stories. Ithas to offer an element that noother author's story offers. Other-wise, the book will get lost in theworks that have already been over-ly created.

Tip 3:Get Assistance With the

Mechanics

A bestselling book has to meetgrammatical qualifications for it toadvance. Therefore, a person willhave to hire an editor or use spe-cialized software to make the man-uscript consistent with the world'srequirements. Some people willnot look at a book that contains anerror. Whether this viewpoint isright or wrong is not the issue. Theissue is that near perfection is re-quired for the bestseller's list. Awriter can hire a private editor whocan assist with the projects.

Tip 4: Choose an EffectivePublishing Route

The positive part of writing a bookis that many publishing servicesare available. Sites such as KindleDirect Publishing, XulonPress andLulu allow writers to self-publishtheir books for a small portion ofthe proceeds. The sites could pro-vide an aspiring author with anopportunity to shine. The self-pub-lishing process allows authors toskip the step that involves present-ing one's work to a publisher. Thewriter becomes the publisher andoffers his or her works to the world. One can enter the bestseller realmon one of these sites and thenexpand his or her profile from there.

Tip 5:Promote Your Book

Promotion is an integral part of thepublishing process, as a personhas little chance to advance with-out doing such. A self-publishingsite may offer a few ways for aperson to promote a new book. Forexample, KDP allows its writers tooffer their books for free for up tofive days. A writer can promote hisor her book by hiring advertisers orconducting self-advertisements onvarious websites, as well. Adver-tisements can be purchased for aslittle as $5 for a one time promotion-al blast, or $80 for a continuousblast. People will eventually sharea good book with their friends andfamily members, and the author'spopularity will spread.

Social media is an excellent way tospread the word about a new orupcoming books. Sites such asFacebook, Twitter and LinkedIncan help a person to build his orher network of readers and sharers.Becoming a bestseller and publish-ing a bestselling book are twotasks that require a tremendousamount of dedication and effort.Success will not come easy. There-fore, an aspiring author will need tounderstand that many obstaclesmay get in the way. The key tosuccess is having faith that one'sendeavors will lead to a satisfyingplace. Anyone who wants to knowhow to be a bestselling author willhave to start with that faith.

Personalize Your Foreword With Anecdotes To Make It More Powerful by Joseph C. Kunz Jr.

Anecdotes are an amazing literary devicefor writers, as well as marketers. They area deceptively powerful writing and market-ing tool. Using anecdotes in the forewordwill immediately make your book stand outfrom the crowd. When written properly, they can be very engaging, and grab andhold onto the reader's attention. This iswhat the foreword is all about. Hooking thereader with an interesting story, and thenreeling them in to make an emotional con-nection with the author of the foreword. Then hopefully the reader will want to con-tinue reading the book, and be more recep-tive to buying a copy.

What Is An Anecdote?

An anecdote is a very short and interestingpersonal story from a person's past experi-ences - that is used to illustrate a point. Itcan be an experience from the writer, orfrom someone they know or have heardabout. The anecdote, or mini-story, imme-diately puts the reader directly into themiddle of the action. It usually describesone dramatic moment in time. It is writtenas a way to show, or illustrate, a particularpoint (show, don't tell). They typically in-volve something that happened such as aproblem, or challenge, or mistake, or mis-understanding, etc.

How To Use Anecdotes In A Foreword

Here is one paragraph from a book fore-word that I wrote entirely as a personalessay. I utilize personal anecdotes toshow how the book had an effect on me -how I relate the information in the book tomy life. I reveal my real life story to showthe reader how I connect with the book. Iuse my personal story to illustrate a largerpoint about the content of the book. My jobas the foreword author is to show thereader that I made an emotional connec-tion with the book, and thereby the hope isthat the reader will make an emotionalconnection with me - and then develop thedesire to read the entire book. WallaceWattles wrote the book. You can read theentire foreword on my blog.

"But now, looking back at my family life, Ihave since come to realize that my mother, with almost no formal education, no careerskills, no money, and three small childrento feed, inherently understood many of thebasic concepts in this book.

My mother was not as eloquent as Wattles, and she didn't have much of an opportuni-ty to put Wattles' principles into practice. But me and my brothers were inadvertent-ly living and learning Wattles' conceptsevery day - through the actions of ourmother. She taught us that even in theworst of times, that by sticking to our sin-gle-minded vision to grow and thrive, thatwe will survive; and acting everyday withpurpose to achieve our goals, that our faithin each other and in our dream of creatinga successful life will help us succeed; andour gratitude to God for keeping us healthyso that we could keep working and study-ing, we would eventually be successful. And eventually, we were."

Anecdotes are one of the most powerfulmarketing tools available to the forewordauthor and the book marketer. Endorse-ments and testimonials from celebritiesand other famous people are probablymore powerful and will have a greaterimpact on book sales. But the forewordshould never be overlooked as an impor-tant part of the book's overall marketingplan. The marketing power of the forewordtypically comes from personal anecdoteswhich should be an essential part of acomplete and effective foreword.

One-A-Day Book MarketingGets Results for Authorsby Harriet Hodgson

How can you boost booksales? There is no quick an-swer to this question becausebook marketing is an ongoingprocess. Still, you can havesome marketing strategies andtake steps that will impactsales. Each day, no matterwhat is going on, no matterhow busy you are, you cantake a proactive step.

Keeping a book marketing logis one way to track your steps. That's what I do and the meth-od is working for me. I alsokeep and update a financialsheet.

Although I can crank out a man-uscript quickly, format it for sub-mission, post on social media, and send emails, my skills endthere. So I search for simplesolutions like keeping a booklog. Reading past entries mademe realize that my marketingsteps fall into several groups:reviews, social media, specialwebsites, "freebies," and newdirections.

Get Amazon reviews. Thiscompany is the largest bookseller in the nation. Websitevisitors pay attention to the re-views, so the publisher advisedauthors to get at least 10 re-views, and strive for more. As Idiscovered, getting reviews isslow. Friends who agree towrite reviews are often busywith their own lives. Some peo-ple are too busy to read a book, let alone write a review. Allowlots of lead time if you pursuethis route.

Tap social media. I found asocial media marketing servicethat looked like a good fit forme, and signed up for two pro-motions. The company is post-ing on social media andcreated two ads--services thatcost me just over $200. Al-though many people are re-posting, only time will tell ifthese efforts lead to substantialsales. According to my publish-er, sales are picking up.

Give books away. Surprisingas it may seem, giving booksaway is one of the cheapest, ifnot the cheapest, form of adver-tising. "Freebies" are cheaperthan print and television ads. Ikeep a supply of books onhand and have given them topotential reviewers and com-munity groups. As a formerpublisher explained, "Peoplefeel special when you givethem a book."

Use review websites. Your pub-lisher may post your book on awebsite that downloads freebooks in return for reviews.

But the people who receiveyour book may not followthrough with a review. My pub-lisher sends me the email ad-dresses for those who receivedmy book, and I send them anemail thank you. Hopefully, mythanks will prompt the personto write a review. You may alsocontact a professional review-ing service and pay for a re-view. If you do this, beprepared for a favorable or un-favorable review.

Follow leads. I donated booksto an elder network organiza-tion in my home town and TheSalvation Army, two organiza-tions that work together. WhenI donated the books, I offeredto give talks and workshopsthat expand my books. Bothorganizations have expressedinterest in this idea. In order tofollow leads, you need to be onthe lookout for them. Newleads can lead to new sales.

I am following my own one-a-day advice. Every day I takeone step to foster book sales. This approach has energizedme, led to new contacts, andgenerated more Internet list-ings. The one-a-day approachmay work for you.--------------------------------------Harriet Hodgson has been a freelanc-er for 37 years, is the author of thou-sands of articles, and 35 books. The Low Down onArticle Marketingby Michael Brito..Article marketing is an effective way tobroaden the online presence of anysmall business. By distributing articlesto multiple article directories on theInternet, your business can reap thebenefits ranging from an increase inweb traffic, lead generation, new cus-tomers and a solid reputation on theInternet. It’s a simple concept that hasthe potential to take your business tothe next level and higher. The foundation of article marketinghas evolved from a well-known strate-gy called Search Engine Optimization,or SEO; a practice where web pagesare optimized with keywords and pub-lished online in an effort to increasesearch engine rankings. There arethree steps to article marketing; re-search, writing the article and distribu-tion.ResearchThe first step is keyword research. It isvital to inundate your article with key-words that you want to rank well for inthe search engines. For example, as-sume I sell used DVDs online. I wouldresearch what keywords people aresearching for relative to the term DVD(i.e. rent DVD, DVD rentals, DVD, orbuy DVD). I would then make a list ofapproximately 10 or so of these key-words that I would want to sprinklethroughout my article. This step isrelatively simple and only takes about30 or so minutes; unless of courseyou are still on dial up.Writing the articleYou cannot just put together a glob ofinformation and call it an article. If youhave this skill, you can write the articleyourself or hire someone to do it foryou. The goal here is to write an objec-tive article related to DVDs; and natu-rally placing the keywords within thecontent of the article. The articleshould not be a sales pitch or anadvertisement. In fact, most articledirectories will not even accept arti-cles written with a “sales type” ap-proach.

The article should be written with theintention to educate consumers aboutsome aspect of DVDs. It’s alwayshelpful to have a catchy title for yourarticle. In addition to keyword rich article, asecond critical component of this strat-egy must include the distribution of awebsite’s URL, commonly referred toas back link. Most, if not all, articledirectories allow for an author re-source box where links can be easilyplaced. Publishing a website’s ad-dress at the end of articles will allowinterested readers to conveniently vis-it the site by clicking on that link.DistributionThis is the component of article mar-keting that takes some time. Thereare approximately 200 or so directo-ries online that allow marketers topost articles. It is good practice tomanually submit these articles to eachdirectory; as most directories havebanned article distribution via automat-ed software. Besides, by using auto-mated software, there is less controlof the article and the article resourcebox.Article Marketing Does More ThanYou ThinkArticle marketing does more than sim-ply reinforce your internet visibility.Unlike direct advertising, it actuallypresents an opportunity to educateyour target consumer group in an ef-fort to build long term, profitable rela-tionships with them. Paidadvertisements usually lose potencyand relevance over time. But a wellwritten article will continue to be repub-lished on various newsletters, web-sites, forums and blogs; and trigger aviral marketing effect that will last formonths at a time.

Benefits of Article Marketing• Anchor text. Most of the article direc-tories allow for the author to select theanchor text of the link in the author’sresource box. This is the primary val-ue of the links from the article directo-ries.

For example, if you are trying to rankfor the key term “internet marketing”,the anchor text would display “internetmarketing” but it would link to yourwebsite.• Relevant One Way links. Say good-bye to reciprocal linking. It’s ineffec-tive and doesn’t work anymore. Articlemarketing provides one way linksfrom web pages that are categorizedwithin the directory according to topicssuch as technology, weddings, com-munication or small business. Addi-tionally, most of the directories usethe article title as the webpage title;and rest assured that the title of thewebpage with your link has your tar-get keyword.• Website Traffic. Those who readythe article and our interested in it willclick through to your website andbring relevant traffic.• Viral Marketing. Most article directo-ries allow other webmasters to reprint(or republish) any articles within theirdirectory. Usually, republished articlescan be found in additional directories, niche websites, forums and blogs.• Mindshare. A click-through from atraditional link is just another visitor. But someone who has read an articleand clicked through from the author’sresource box link is generally a highlyqualified visitor who has been partlysold on the value of your offering.Meanwhile, even readers who do notclick-through have been exposed toyour message. You can help shapethe market, building awareness ofyour product or service. Finally, the ConclusionWith the recent buzz about article mar-keting, there should be no questionsas to why it is regarded as one of themost potent marketing strategies to-day. However, the fact of the matter isthat article marketing is only one com-ponent of a successful marketing plan.------------------------------------------------Michael Brito is an internet marketingconsultant for small business special-izing in SEO and web strategy. 3 Common Myths AboutBook-Buyer Retentionby Joseph C Kunz, Jr

The business concept of holdingonto, or retaining, past and currentcustomers, is typically not givenmuch thought by many self-publish-ers. But building a following of read-ers that will continue to read andbuy what you have published in thepast, and will publish in the future, isimperative for your long-term finan-cial success as a self-publisher.Therefore, implementing a book-buy-er retention plan, more commonly acalled customer retention plan, mustbe an essential part of every self-publisher's marketing plans. Hereare a few common myths surround-ing book-buyer retention that mighthave been preventing you from im-plementing a plan to help you retainpast and current readers and buyers.

Myth #1. Book-Buyer Retention IsNot Realistic Or Practical For Self-Publishers

One big mistake many self-publish-es make is attaching no or little im-portance to book-buyer retention. Many self-publishers see book-buy-er retention as too difficult to accom-plish, and as a waste of precioustime, to be of any significant value. However, my research has shownthat by simply retaining a small num-ber of committed readers and book-buyers, you can significantly in-crease your profits now and into thefuture. It can take quite a bit of timeto build this core audience. But aslong as you keep producing qualitycontent that they need and can ben-efit from, your audience will grow. Therefore, you must take the time todevelop that core group of peoplewithin your niche that you strive tobe the go-to-person for if you everexpect to become a financially suc-cessful author.

Myth #2. Book-Buyers Will ContinueTo Buy From You If They Like You

Being liked or trusted is not enoughin today's world where it is very easyto find an expert in a particular niche. And book buyers can easily get over-whelmed because of the increasingnumber of new books being pub-lished every day by likable and trust-ed authors. Therefore, you mustnever take your followers for grant-ed. The minute that you stop updat-ing your blog with new and relevantcontent, for example, you are takingthe risk that your readers and book-buyers will start to forget about you.Even the most loyal supporters ofyour brand can very easily be luredaway by other authors that are alsowriting within you niche and pursu-ing the same audience that you arepursuing. Therefore, in order to befinancially successful as a self-pub-lisher, you must keep remindingyour audience with new content andnew books, that you are the go-toperson within you niche.

Myth #3. It Is Possible To Hold OntoAll Of Your Readers And Buyers

Every self-publisher must acceptthe fact that not all readers andbook-buyers will stay with them forthe long-haul. Despite your contin-ued efforts of producing more blogcontent, videos, and new books, many consumers will always besearching for the next hot authorand quickly stop following you. Youcannot allow this fickle group to both-er you, or slow you down from yourmission of producing quality contentfor your audience. Nothing you do orsay will hold onto this group. Keepfocusing your attention and effortson your core audience. You owe it tothis core group to continue to pro-vide them with honest and informa-tive content that helps them solvetheir problems and improves theirlives. Therefore, a successful self-publisher understands who this audi-

ence is, knows where to find them, and constantly provides them withthe information that they need.

Conclusion

Self-publishers, just like any otherbusiness owners, must constantlystrive to build a core audience thatwill keep coming back for more. Andagain, just like any business, it ismuch easier, and takes much lesseffort, to keep selling to your follow-ers and those that have bought fromyou before. This core group is price-less. Understanding who they are,and where to find them, and know-ing what they need, and then provid-ing it to them, over and over again, will guarantee that you will buildsome level of financial success as aself-publisher.

Networking for YourTarget Audienceby Bette Daoust, Ph.D.

I know who the target audienceis for my books but I'm havingtrouble connecting with them. How do I network with my read-ers?

Networking is a very looselyused term. It can encompassmany forms such as face toface meetings, group meetings, virtual presentations, social me-dia discussions, and informalgatherings.

The bigger issue is that youneed to define your perfectreaders before deciding how tonetwork with them.

If you know they always go tolibrary talks, attend webinarsgiven by authors, or hang outon Pinterest, then you have thebasis for building a relationshipwith your readers.

Here are 5 tactics you can useto connect with your readers.

Be interested in them. Do nottalk about yourself, take thetime to learn as much as youcan when it comes to interests, wants, and needs. All of thesebits of information will help youto better target your approachto gaining your own following.

Talk in terms of reader bene-fits. Readers are only interest-ed in themselves and byconcentrating on what is in it forthem (WIIFT) you will have abetter chance of grabbing theirattention.

Be a part of the conversation.Add your comments without thesales approach, be the one thatshares readily. Readers will besure to find out more about youwhen you offer free advice andshare on a regular basis.

Be an advocate for the reader.Find reasons to support theirreading needs. Offer sugges-tions and even offer parts ofyour own work.

Direct them to some of yoursocial media platforms by ask-ing for input. Ask and you shallget followers and potential read-ers for your books.

With these tactics in hand, youwill still need to constantly feedinformation and follow up, andthrough, with conversations.Being there consistently showsyou are truly interested in them.Show up sporadically and youwill likely be dismissed as some-one who is just trying to selltheir wares.

So how can you be consistentwith keeping up on all the con-versations?

Start your day with a list of plac-es to visit and make comments.Add time snippets to your day toadd to conversations. At Au-thor's Success Guild, we add tosome of our social media plat-forms first thing in the morning, check the status a couple oftimes during the day to makesure there is nothing urgent toanswer and finally look at ourstatistics for our entries at theend of the day.

We use a number of tools tohelp us with the process. Weuse Tweetdeck for our Twitterfeeds, Hootsuite to do schedul-ing of posts and monitor re-sponses, and direct messagingfor our groups. Being informedabout what is happening at alltimes keeps us busy and itkeeps us involved and respond-ing to reader needs. Youshould consider doing the same.

Create a Demand ForYour Book and IncreaseYour Bookselling Profitsby Al Galasso

There is nothing like the ex-citement and joy when yourbook finally arrives from theprinter and you are officially apublished author. You wantto tell the whole world aboutyour accomplishment andshare your book with every-one you know.

Before you give away copiesof your work freely to friends, relatives and interested par-ties, here is a marketing ployyou might want to consider.Getting your book into a book-store can be a daunting chal-lenge, but there is a way todo it that has worked forsome of the largest publish-ers. It has to do with creatinga demand. Here is the firstway to do it:

Instead of giving the peopleyou know copies of your book, have them call a number ofbookstores in their area ask-ing the stores if they carryyour title. Believe it or not, if abookstore receives a dozenor so requests for a title, theymay actually decide to carryit. Before you do this, be surethe book is available throughwholesalers and book distrib-utors like Ingram and Baker &Taylor so the stores can orderthe books.

Believe it or not, books havebecome best sellers whenthe authors knew thousandsof people all over the countrywho picked up a phone andrequested a certain title. Ofcourse, you can start on alocal scale and work fromthere.

Another way to create de-mand is to have people gointo the stores and ask topurchase the book. Manytimes these days, stores canorder titles that can beshipped to the buyer or thestore directly, and often atvery good discounts. In somecases, they can even be print-ed and bound right at thestore if it has the right equip-ment. When your friend orrelative purchases a copy, offer to autograph it for themto make it even more special.

When I was watching a PBSBritish comedy series someyears ago, I came up with asecond idea for creating ademand when you are doingan author signing. Again, itinvolves your friends and rela-tives. You want to make yoursigning as profitable as possi-ble but not enough peopleare showing up. So you hirea number of friends to standin line to get the ball rolling.Make certain you let the storeowner know what you aredoing before you attempt this.

When the friend comes toyour table he will give you asignal, such as a wink so you

pretend to personally auto-graph the book but are onlysigning your signature. Laterthe book is returned to theshelf and the store can sell itas an autographed copy tofuture buyers. When a line isformed at a bookstore, poten-tial buyers want to see whatis going on and real sales willeventually take place. Youcan turn a mediocre authorsigning into a successful one.

If you belong to a particulargroup, club or business, in-vite the members or businessassociates to help you in yourmarketing. You may be ableto sell many books to thesemarkets, at a discount, and insome cases the books canbe used to raise funds for theclubs themselves. This is awin-win for everyone in-volved. We had one NABEmember sell more than100,000 cookbooks in thismanner.

Remember that creating ademand sets the stage forsales. And, as I have saidtime and time again, follow-up is the key to book market-ing profits. At your signings orpublic events, be sure to giveaway a free report or gift andcollect the name and e-mailaddress of a potential buyer.Give them a postcard with alink to your website and thefree gift. They will appreciateit and you will get more salesfor your book in the future.
