Book Club Discussion Guide 1. Throughout the story, Amora reaffirms that all she’s ever wanted is to be a good queen to her people. Do you believe that she will make a good queen? Why or why not? 2. Kaven’s main goals throughout the novel are to disband the monarchy and to make all forms of magic available to everyone. Do you think he was justified in each of these goals? 3. Because Kaven is his brother, Bastian feels a deep sense of guilt for not having returned to Zudoh earlier to try and help his people. He has a moment where he breaks down and Amora tells him, “We are not the mistakes of our family,” while also confronting the guilt she feels about her family and what they’ve done. How do you feel about this quote? Do you believe that you any responsibility for the actions of your family? 4. If you had to live on one of the seven islands and practice only its form of magic, which would you choose and why? 5. 1. Throughout the book, we see the effects of how the kingdom of Visidia is adapting to the changing laws that now allow them to practice any form of magic. Which island do you think adapted the best? Which do you think will struggle the most?

2. After striking a deal with Blarthe, Amora withholds from Vataea the truth of his capture. After leaving the crew in anger, Vataea eventu-ally forgives Amora and promises that they can try to rebuild their relationship. Did you think her forgiveness was warranted?

3. Due to the Montara curse, Amora spends a large portion of her time trying to avoid Bastian until she is fully herself again, so that she can trust that whatever she feels for him is real. Do you think this was fair to him, considering that he was forced to remain close to her—and not return to Zudoh to help repair his home, which like he longed to do?

4. Amora makes a decision early on to try and be the type of queen her people wanted to see, and to not be fully herself for the sake of preserving her kingdom. How did you feel about this? Do you think that if Amora were a king, she would have faced the same judgment?

5. Do you think Amora’s journey in this book was easier or more diffi cult than her journey throughout All the Stars and Teeth?

6. At the end of the novel, Ferrick sacrifi ces himself to break the Montara curse. Did this seem in character for him? What did you think of his decision?
