 Sandwich  Board  Advertising    One  of  the  chapters  in  the  book  talked  about  putting  on  Gold  Buying  Events  at  a  local  hotel  or  community  center.    In  the  book  I  mentioned  that  newspaper  and  radio  advertising  were  an  excellent  way  to  attract  sellers  to  such  an  event.    But  many  of  you  starting  out  just  don’t  have  the  funds  to  do  that,  so  there  is  another  way.    Look  at  the  photos  below:    

                   I  saw  this  sign  a  few  days  ago  (in  early  May  2011)  when  I  was  on  my  way  to  meet  some  friends  for  brunch  on  a  Sunday  morning  after  church.    This  fellow  had  about  6  of  these  signs  spread  around  town  –all  near  busy  intersections.    So  I  went  by  the  hotel  and  spoke  with  him.  I  asked  how  he  was  doing  and  he  said  he  had  been  there  since  yesterday  and  had  seen  about  two  dozen  people  each  day.    That  was  pretty  impressive.        In  my  experience  the  average  person  brings  in  about  1  to  2  ounces  of  gold  scrap,  which  works  out  to  about  1  ounce  of  pure  gold.  Times  2-­‐dozen  (24)  that  is  a  lot  of  gold.    Even  after  paying  for  the  hotel  room  and  your  food,  you  would  make  somewhere  between  $10,000  and  $16,000  each  day.    Even  if  you  did  25%  of  that  amount  it  would  be  a  winner  ($2500-­‐$4000).    We  live  in  a  small  town  of  only  12,000  so  you  would  probably  do  even  better  in  a  larger  town.    

I  asked  the  gentleman  putting  on  the  sale  if  he  did  any  radio  or  TV  advertising.  He  said  no,  all  he  uses  were  the  sandwich  boards  and  he  also  emails  all  his  prior  customers  and  asks  them  to  tell  their  friends  he  is  coming  to  town.  So  I  called  a  sign  shop  and  looked  into  the  cost  of  sandwich  boards.    Here  is  what  I  found  out.    If  I  made  the  boards  myself  they  would  cost  me  about  $11  each  for  materials  and  the  sign  maker  would  charge  me  $12  per  sign  on  plastic  that  I  could  just  glue  on  the  board.    If  the  sign  maker  did  the  boards  for  me,  he  would  charge  me  $64  per  signboard.  So  six  signboards  would  run  me  $384  if  they  made  the  signs  and  $138  if  I  made  the  boards  myself  and  just  glued  the  signs  on.    The  signs  are  printed  on  weather  proof  plastic  and  the  sign  maker  said  they  would  be  good  for  about  2000  hours  outside  in  the  sun  and  weather  before  they  started  to  fade.    He  also  said  that  every  once  in  a  while  someone  would  steal  a  sign  so  you  should  factor  in  occasional  replacement  cost.
