The Sound Transit Board voted Aug. 28 to purchase the Bonney Lake Park and Ride from Pierce Transit.
Pierce Transit discontinued service to the Bonney Lake Park and Ride in June 2012 by stopping the route 496 bus, which ran between the Park and Ride and Sumner Sounder Station. Sound Transit then picked up the route as ST Express Route 596, which will continue to take riders to the train station.
“We had some concern when we were cut out of Pierce Transit,” said Dan Morrison, city administrator for Bonney Lake. “But we were able to maintain the bus ser-vice through Sound Transit. We are really happy we can retain a park and ride here. It is good for Sumner, Puyallup and Bonney Lake that Sound Transit made the pur-chase.”
Sound Transit agreed to purchase the Park and Ride from Pierce Transit for $2,810,000. However, Sound Transit will receive a credit against the purchase price for $123,135 from Pierce Transit for repair work.
Winners of the BEST of the Plateau will be announced in the September 24th edition of The Courier-Herald. This is a great opportunity to say “THANK YOU” to all your loyal friends, customers and family for taking the time to vote.

Homestead Brew Specialty Coffee in Sumner has far more meaning for Keri Shiner than owning and
operating a business. It is way to remember and an inspiration for her life.
Shiner lost her son, Jared Trudeau, June 27, 2012, to a motorcycle accident. He was 21.
Shiner has turned the grief of her loss into a positive experience for herself and her daughter, Jamie Trudeau.
Shiner decided to purchase Homestead Brew located in McLendon’s parking lot when her daughter told her it was for sale.
Trudeau had worked at the coffee stand for the previous owners.
Shiner said she initially agreed to buy the stand because it would give her “something to do” after her son’s death.
“This stand is something Jamie and I can do together,” Shiner said.
Since purchasing Homestead Brew, Shiner has received advice, assistance and support from many friends and business associates.

“I truly believe that people and situations are placed in our life for a rea-son,” Shiner said. “I don’t believe in coincidences.”
Shiner said Patti and Howard Heyer, own-ers of the Dillanos Coffee Roasters that is served at Homestead brews, helped her take, “what was a reac-tion to a tragedy and the subsequent purchasing of the coffee stand to stay busy and heal,” and turn it into a viable business.
Shiner said Dave Rand with Dillanos and Lon LaFamme have also been extremely helpful through-out this experience.
She said Rand is her “right hand man” and LaFamme helps with mar-keting.
The stand has been remodeled with the help of Shiner’s husband and she said aside from a few minor
touches here and there, the stand is almost fully done.
The logo for Homestead Brew is inspired by the last photograph her son took on his phone.
On his second to last ride on his motorcycle, Shiner said he was out riding and snapped a photograph of Mount Rainier.
He later put it on his Facebook page and wrote, “awesome ride today.”
The stand’s logo is designed by Christine Felty
and is inspired by the image her son took that day.
Since opening less than a year ago, Shiner said the customers, whether they know the story of her son or not, “have been awe-some…. We appreciate it more than anyone knows.”
In the coming weeks, Shiner and her family will be working with East Pierce Fire & Rescue’s Benevolent Fund. The work they do with the fund will be in Jared Trudeau’s name.

Pierce County Councilman Dan Roach learned first hand that wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle can save lives – it saved his.
Roach was involved in seri-ous bicycle accident Aug. 23 while training for the Labor of Love Triathlon.
While turning onto the West Tapps Highway portion of the triathlon course, Roach was cut off by a dog. Roach hit the dog full on, and per-
formed what many bicyclists coin as an “endo” – short for end over end, when bicyclists are thrown off their bikes over their handlebars.
Roach broke his right col-larbone and three ribs in the crash, but did not suffer any head injuries because he was wearing a helmet.
He described the crash as a “hit and slam,” and that he did not skid too far on the road.
Witnesses on the road called the 911 for Roach.
Along with his injuries,
Roach’s helmet was severely damaged. “The impact hit the back right side of the hel-met, right behind the ear,” he said. A large piece of the helmet broke off because of the impact, and the helmet cracked through the middle.
Roach said the accident was “potentially fatal” because he landed on his head, and the crash would have been a “whole different story” if he wasn’t wearing his helmet.

National Alpaca Farm Days will be coming to the Plateau Sept. 27 and 28. Farms that are hosting free open houses for the weekend include Liberty Alpacas in Maple Valley, Polaris Alpacas in Tacoma, and Stellar Alpacas in Spanaway.
Alpacas are mainly used for their fiber, which the Alpacas Owners Association claim is lighter and warmer than wool. Alpaca fiber also does not contain any grease or lanolin like wool can, is hypoallergenic and water resistant.
Lorrie and Jeff Williamson started Liberty Alpacas farm back in 2007. “We needed to
get livestock for our prop-erty, and I didn’t want to do horses anymore,” Lorrie Williamson said.
Instead, the Williamson’s attended a National Alpaca Farm Day event, and when they saw the alpacas Lorrie said, “It was love at first sight.”
Liberty Alpacas is partici-pating in National Alpaca
Farm Days this year, and will have their farm and store open for those two days.
The Williamsons said there are two kinds of alpacas on farms.
The first kind of alpaca is called a huacaya (pronounced wa-Ki’-ah). Huacayas look like teddy bears, said Lorrie, and have shorter fiber than a suri.
Suris have longer fibers that, “hang down like dread-locks,” said Jeff Williamson, and tends to be curly.
According Jeff Williamson alpacas are normally shaved once a year around May or June, “and produce any-where from three to 12 or
14 pounds of fleece,” though eight pounds tends to be the average.
The Alpacas Owners Association reports alpaca fibers range in price from between two to five dollars per ounce of fiber.
However, t he Williamsons don’t sell raw fiber. Instead, they send their fiber to Bob and Danise Cathel in Sunnyside, who run Silbury Hill Alpaca farm and Spring Harvest Fiber Mill.
The Cathels started their mill in July 2013, and since then, “business has been booming,” said Bob Cathel, mentioning that they have
multiple months of back-logged orders.
The Cathels are sent fiber from all over Washington, and they process the raw fiber into yarn, which is sent back to farmers.
The Williamsons then make their own products from the fiber, “because it is more profitable than selling raw fleece,” said Jeff.
According to the Alpaca Owner’s Association, raw fiber tends to sell at two to five dollars per ounce.
Liberty Alpacas sells yarn for purchasers to knit their own clothes, as well as hats and socks the Williamson’s make themselves.

temporal lobe part of the brain. The temporal lobe is responsible for sensory input and when damaged, can dis-turb hearing, vision, verbal skills and long term memory,
as well as cause personal-ity changes, according to the Centre for Neuro Skills.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety report-ed there were 722 reported bicyclist deaths in 2012, 469 of those deaths, or 65 per-cent, were from not wearing
a helmet during the crash. Of the 123 deaths, 17 percent, were wearing a helmet when they died. It is not known if remaining 130 deaths, or 18 percent, were wearing a hel-met when they died.
According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety
Administration, bicycle hel-met use is 85 percent effec-tive at mitigating head and brain injuries and preventing deaths.
Additionally, a recent National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study found the highest source of
injury for bicyclists, 29 per-cent, is being hit by a car. The lowest cause of injury, at four percent, is when a dog runs out in front of a
bike. Roach said he does not
know whether or not the dog he hit was injured, or where it went after the crash.

September is a good time for lawn renova-tion. The hot, dry summer was a good indica-tor of the problem spots in your lawn as dry brown grass turns up where soil is compacted or full of boulders. Dig down into your brown areas to remove any clay soil, boulders or gravel under the surface of your lawn. Replace clay sections and fill in the space left from boulders with topsoil. Rake level then reseed or resod the area.
Q. Can saffron crocus be grown in our area? I love to cook with saffron but it is a very expensive spice. Anonymous, email
A. Yes! Saffron crocus or crocus sativus is an underused herb and easy to grow in our area. You will need to order the bulbs online as I have not seen them for sale at local nurs-eries and you want to make sure you get the crocus for culinary use. Find them at www.dutchgrown.crocus-saffron.html. and plant the bulbs as soon as they arrive so you can harvest the saffron this fall. These beautiful purple crocus bloom in the fall but should not be confused with the autumn blooming crocus (crocus colchicums) which are not edible. I suggest you plant and mark the location of the bulbs because after the autumn blooming the leaves will disappear. You will need at least 20 bulbs for a first-year harvest but if not all the bulbs bloom this fall just wait until next autumn for an increased supply. To harvest saffron, visit the bulbs on a sunny morning when the petals are wide open and pull the long red filaments or stigmas off with your fingers. Dry the threads indoors and store in an airtight container. Add these to a cup of hot broth or milk and let steep for 20 minutes. Now you have golden saffron for paella and Indian food or add this golden broth to mashed potatoes for a Midas touch on the holidays. Saffron is the world’s most expensive spice but not because it is hard to grow – it is the hand harvesting of the thread-like filaments that makes it pricey. Even if you don’t intend to cook with saffron, add some crocus sativus to
your garden for fall blooms in a rock garden or other sunny spot that has well-drained soil.
Q. I have a huge clump of phlox in my garden that grows about 5 feet tall and blooms each summer with clumps of white flowers. They smell wonderful at night. Over the years I notice I am getting fewer blooms. Do garden phlox need to be divided? If so, when? Thank you. L.S., Renton
A. Sounds like you are the proud owner of Phlox paniculata and the variety David is a mildew-resistant, white-flowering phlox that blooms at the end of summer. This perennial needs to be divided every few years or it will become old and cranky. Fall is the perfect time to divide phlox and other perennials. Dig the clump from the soil, cut off side sections into clumps the size of your fist and replant into soil that has been improved with compost. Be sure to retire the old center of the clump to your compost pile. Phlox can suffer from mildew on the foliage so give it a spot in a mostly sunny site with plenty of space to ensure good air circula-tion. A mulch on top of the soil each summer will keep the roots cool and the tops producing those fragrant, white domes of bloom.
Q. There is a vine that looks like a clematis that is huge and covering a shed in our neigh-borhood. It is very fragrant and nobody prunes, waters or feeds this monster of a plant. I would love to grow it as a screening vine along a fence. Do you have any idea what it could be? M.P., Puyallup
A. Sounds like you have met the Sweet Autumn Clematis or Clematis terniflora. This rapidly-growing vine becomes covered with small but fragrant white blooms at the end of summer and into fall. It is happiest when given lots of room to sprawl and like all clematis does best in rich, moist soil with its top is in the sun but the roots are shaded – growing a clematis on the north or shaded side of a stump or shed is the perfect location as the top will head for the sun-shine. Fall is a good time to add clematis vines to the garden and using this aggressive grower as a screen is fine if you don’t mind that it will lose most of its leaves each winter and dead brown foliage often clings to the stems.
Feed your lawn in the fall

Sound Transit Board, said that the purchase “means that East Pierce County can depend on its availability for the future. We all owe a big thank you to Sound Transit.”
Sound Transit reported that 416 boardings on average for route 596 per day.
Between April and June of this year, Sound Transit
reported there were more than 27,000 boardings on Route 596, a 24 percent rise from the same time period last year.
Sound Transit Route 596 currently runs from Bonney Lake to Sumner in the morn-ings between 4:55 and 8:00, and runs from Sumner to Bonney Lake in the evening from 3:52 to 6:52.

“Putin surely understands that try-ing to subdue Ukraine would be like swallowing a porcupine. His response to events there has been defensive, not offensive.” These are the words of the author, John J. Mearshimer, in his insightful article (“Why the Ukraine Crisis is the West’s Fault”) in the September/October 2014 edition of “Foreign Affairs.”
The author believes, and I agree, that the way President Obama and the European Union are handling the Ukrainian crisis is a major mistake. Their actions are based upon the ideal-istic belief that the principles of rule of law, democracy and economic interde-pendence should function in Ukraine rather than Realpolitik and geography.
U.S. and E.U. actions to bring Ukraine into the E.U. and NATO have forced Putin’s hand by making the Russians feel vulnerable. Russia does not want to invade Ukraine, nor does it want to control its population. Doing so would be extremely costly and unpopular. As Putin has said on numerous occasions, he wants Ukraine to be a neutral, free, stable and prosperous nation. Russia
needs to have a nonaligned Ukraine to give Russia breathing space from any attacks from the West.
Russia is no longer a superpower; it’s actually a declining power as its population rapidly ages. But Russia’s history and flat geography has meant that Mongols, Poles, Swedes, French, and Germans (twice) have invaded it numerous times in its history. Russia does not want the E.U. and NATO on its border.
President Obama’s speech about Ukraine in March of this year shows his idealistic and incorrect attitude: he was concerned that Western policy ideals “have often been threatened by an older, more traditional view of power.” That is Realpolitik of the Russians protecting their western flank from a potential invasion.
Mearsheimer gave pointed comments about those ideals: While Ukraine has the right to ally with whomever it wants, reality about East/West conflict over-whelms those rights. And while Ukraine has the right to petition to join the E.U. and NATO, the E.U. has the right to deny those petitions, especially since it’s obvious that Ukraine is not vital to its security interests, just as Georgia’s interests were not vital to the U.S. when
Russia invaded that country in 2008 and the U.S. stood by and watched.
Russia has as much right to feel secure as the United States did during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. President Kennedy weighed whether the U.S. should invade Cuba because the Soviets had placed medium-range nuclear mis-siles there. America felt threatened just as Russia is feeling threatened now by Western meddling in Ukraine.
I also found Secretary of State John Kerry’s response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea: “You just don’t in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on com-pletely trumped-up pretext” to be both ironic and hypocritical if we remember our invasion of Iraq by the G.W. Bush administration in 2003 because of a trumped-up fear of “Weapons of Mass Destruction.”
Additionally, President Obama also owes President Putin some slack in the Ukraine crisis, especially since it was “Putin who pulled Obama’s chestnuts out of the fire by forging the deal under which Syria agreed to relinquish its chemical weapons, thereby avoiding the U.S. military strike that Obama had

Families have resources to ensure kids’ success
Many thanks to Katherine Smith for her comprehen-sive and helpful coverage of the “fail” label for schools in Washington state. My understanding of all these issues has also been helped by reading the in-depth article in The Christian Science Monitor, entitled “Education Reform: Does it add up?” (can be found by Googling “Education reform CS Monitor”).
I think that too much emphasis has been placed on the importance of competent teachers. Academic success begins with parents who start when their children are infants to talk with them often about more than the tasks of daily life – to explain how things work, what is happen-ing around them, what is responsible, respectful, kind, just, honest living, and the value of learning and hard work. Add to that reading to and playing with children from an early age and they will be ready to benefit from what our teachers present to them in school.
Education, in its root meaning, is a “leading out” – leading students out of ignorance, but also bringing out in them the intelligence, wisdom, integrity, strength, and love that I believe they already have within them, rather than having to get them.
No matter what the outcome of this “game of chicken” is between state and federal lawmakers, we have the resources right now, within our own families right here, to be sure our kids are well-prepared for life. This is no time for discouragement.

As summer winds die down and the 2014 school year begins, the Panthers and Spartans have kicked off the fall sports season.
GIRLS SOCCER
SUMNERThe Sumner Spartans girls
soccer team reached the top of the mountain last year as the South Puget Sound League 2A champions. The team fin-ished the year with 18 wins, two losses and one tie.
This year, the Spartans move to the SPSL 3A.
“Our strength is our defense. We have given up only six goals in two years,” said coach Robi Turley.
Retuning to the field this year are seniors Alyssa Murray, SPSL first team, Brooke Lancaster, mid-fielder SPSL first team, Jamie Lange, goalkeeper SPSL first team and sophomore Jordan Thompson, defender SPSL first team.
Lange was honored as Goalkeeper of the Year. Murray was awarded with Most Valuable Player on defense.
“She is the anchor to our defense,” Turley said.
The team may be in a dif-ferent league, but the winning formula will likely be the same.
VOLLEYBALL
BONNEY LAKEDebbie Beckwith enters her
first year as head coach of the Panthers.
Beckwith has been an assis-tant coach for the past 22 years, all with the Sumner School District.
Beckwith said, “the bulk of (the) team from last year is returning.”
She added that the Panthers also have three players on the team who were on the team two years ago when Bonney Lake made it to the state tour-nament.
“We need to prepare our-selves to play at a high level every match because all of the teams in our league are com-petitive,” she said.
This season the Panthers returned seven players after four seniors graduated last year.
Some players to keep an eye on, Beckwith said, are senior middle hitter Vegas Casey, senior middle and out-side hitter Miranda Jeter and freshman middle hitter Carly Gibbon.
The Panthers opened their season hosting South Kitsap on Monday after the press

SUMNERThe Sumner volleyball team
made its second state tourna-ment appearance last year, ending their season with 11 wins and four losses.
This year the team will com-pete in the SPSL 3A league.
“There will not be any easy matches this year,” said coach Eric Stansbury. “We are work-ing hard in practice, challeng-ing ourselves to play at a higher level.”
Returning are seniors Kelsey Cornett, Taylor Comerford, juniors Heather Thompson, Kiandra Franklin and sopho-more Michelle Passmore.
Comerford also participates in Associated Student Body, and Passmore plays in the school band.
Joining the team are seniors Cassidy Kendall, Sam Petersen, Brooke Beddow, junior Hanna
Fox and sophomore Georgia Hinds.
GIRLS SWIM
BONNEY LAKEJerry Turner will be coach-
ing the girls swim team for Bonney Lake. Turner has been the coach for the boys team at Sumner and has also spent time as an assistant coach for both Bonney Lake and Sumner.
Turner said he expects, “great things from the girls as individuals and (in) relays.”
Turner said he spent the off season “adjusting (his) excep-tions of times to better suit the girls.”
Turner has also spent the off season, studying the rule changes that will be in place this year.
He added, assistant coach Jay Paulson has helped him throughout the summer.
Turner said 15 swimmers from last years team are returning minus a few seniors that graduated last year.

This week is National Assisted Living Week, an annual celebration
of activities and events fea-tured by the National Center for Assisted Living.
National Assisted Living Week started in 1995 to show senior citizens that their community cares for them.
On the Plateau, there are many organizations and resources designed around showing senior citizens both in and out of assisted living that they are cared for.
One of those organizations is the Enumclaw Regional Health Care Foundation.
Founded in 1982, the foun-dation has raised more than four million dollars to sup-port the Plateau community.
“Offering programs to all residents of the Plateau, regardless of age, is impor-tant to keep our community vibrant and healthy,” said René Popke, director of the Enumclaw Regional Health Foundation.
One of the programs the foundation offers to seniors and families is the Care Van. The Care Van can be sched-uled to take patients to their medical appointments and help them pick up medical prescriptions, and can pick up patients in Enumclaw, Buckley, Bonney Lake, Black
Diamond, Wilkeson and Carbonado.
Popke said there is a hydraulic lift on the care van, “so wheelchairs, walkers, and electric scooters are not a problem.”
Another program the foun-dation offers is Neighbors Feeding Neighbors, and is offered to people for those that are homebound or have trouble preparing their own food.
Neighbors Feeding Neighbors delivers a hot meal every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with the option to also deliver a cold meal for the days food isn’t delivered.
Plateau resources abound for senior citizens

Neighbors Feeding Neighbors has delivered over nine thousand meals since January 2013, said Popke, and a high number of their clientele are senior citizens.
Popke also said that Neighbors Feeding
Neighbors is limited to deliv-ering meals in Enumclaw because of the difficulty in meeting Food Department regulations while delivering so many meals.
“The more drivers we have, the more seniors we can serve,” Popke said.
The foundation also helps organize hot meals to be served at Calvary
Presbyterian Church for any-one that needs a meal. This program, called Full Bellies, serves food every Thursday evenings except the last Thursday of the month. Meals are cooked and served by various groups in the community, and are served from 5:30 to 6:30 in the evening.
Colleen Michael, the
original force behind orga-nizing Full Bellies, said that there are no questions asked of people who show up for food.
A separate event, put together by Pierce County’s Alzheimer’s Caregiver Conference, will be hold-ing its annual conference on Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church
in Tacoma from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The conference focuses on caregivers, family mem-bers, and friends who are caring for an individual with Alzheimer’s.
“The challenges fac-ing caregivers of individu-als with Alzheimer’s are incredible,” said Aaron Van Valkenburg, manager of Pierce County Aging
& Disability Resources. “Caregiving places incred-ible physical and emotional demands on spouses and families. While researchers continue to seek a cure, the best we can do right now is to provide the best support possible to those individu-als who continue to provide loving care to people with dementia.”

To celebrate her 93rd birthday, Goldie Woehrle will do some-thing a little unusual – she’s going skydiving.
Goldie got the idea from watch-ing her friend Jessica Nevin, 25, jump with Skydive Kapowsin five years ago.
“Ever since then, I’ve been really excited that I knew somebody that did something like that,” she said.
So two months ago, Goldie decided she’s going to jump from the plane on Sept. 27, simply
because “It’s something I’ve never done,” she said.
Goldie’s been a Enumclaw resi-dent since 1941, and worked for 20 years in the school’s lunch pro-gram, running the central kitchen at Kibler Elementary and cook-ing the main meal for the dis-trict’s students. Goldie retired in 1983, and currently lives at Living Court, an assisted living facility in Enumclaw. It was there where she got acquainted with Jessica.
Ever since watching Jessica jump, skydiving has been on Goldie’s mind. She followed sto-ries in the Seattle Times about
Felix Baumgartner, the man who jumped from 24 miles up and broke the sound barrier in 2012. Goldie cut out the news stories and mailed them to Jessica.
Goldie said she’s not worried about the jump, but she’s been anxious for the past few months, “twiddling her thumbs” until the day comes.
“I sprained my ankle sitting down a while ago, and a lady asked me if I was still going sky-diving,” Goldie said. “I said, ‘I can only die once.’”
Goldie is also trying to get her grandson, Austin, to go on the
same jump with her. One of Goldie’s hobbies is
poetry, and when Jessica jumped, Goldie wrote a poem for her. Now
that she’s about partake in the same experience, she’s drafting a poem for herself. Of course, Goldie said, she can’t finish until after her jump.
Goldie said writing and poetry is how she can remember so many of her memories.
“The only thing that worries me is that all my life, I’ve suf-fered from motion sickness. But I’ve got a solution. I’m going to stick a plastic bag right here,” she said, patting her shoulder, where she plans to carry the bags in her flight suit.

Of course, you knew already that you should eat right,
exercise regularly, not smoke, and not drink too much alcohol. Now a new study from Germany found even more evidence that you are well advised to fol-low these guidelines. In fact, your life could depend on it. Among countless other health benefits, peo-ple who maintain a healthy lifestyle have a significantly reduced risk of stroke, the study concluded.
A stroke occurs when one of the arteries carrying blood from the heart to the brain is either blocked or bursts. As a result, part of the brain does not get the blood it needs, and starts to die. When this happens, the brain either temporarily or permanently malfunctions, depending on the severity of the damage that has been caused.
While previous studies honed in on individual risk factors for stroke, this one looked at the effects of an overall health-promoting lifestyle. Conversely, by analyzing the combined
risks from less health-con-ducive behavior, a more complete picture emerges of what may actually lead to a stroke and how it could be prevented, the researchers suggested.
After reviewing medical data from nearly 24,000 people, and analyzing each person’s stroke-related risk factors, the research-ers found that improving diet and lifestyle choices could significantly lower the number of strokes that occur every year.
“Our combined risk fac-tor analysis indicated that about 38 percent of pri-
mary stroke occurrences could have been prevented in our study population if all study participants had maintained the healthiest risk profile,” said Kaja Tikk, an epidemiologist at the Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, Germany.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 800,000 people suffer a stroke per year in the United States alone.
The most significant
contributors to stroke-related risks were found to be smoking and weight problems. Fortunately, these are areas in their lives where people have a great deal of control, said Tikk. Weight loss and smoking cessation can be done suc-cessfully by the individual, and taking such steps has almost immediate benefits.
For instance, while smoking effectively doubles the risk of stroke compared to not smoking, most ex-
smokers can return to risk levels similar to lifetime non-smokers after a rela-tively short period of time.
The same is true for weight loss. Staying within (or returning to) a nor-mal weight range, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly to keep the weight off rank among the best measures for stroke preven-tion according to the CDC.
In terms of healthcare, prevention of stroke should be considered a priority.

NOTICEWashington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (re- ceipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d bu ye r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quan- tity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the de- livery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a cord by v isual iz ing a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet . Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. To make a f i r ewood complaint, call 360-902- 1857.

The Europeans are fac-ing a cold winter if the Russians decide to retaliate against increased U.S. and E.U. sanctions over Ukraine. Putin could decide to cut off
Russian natural gas and oil to western Europe. He has already banned western European food for a year in retaliation against them.
Because Russia recently signed a major and long-term oil and natural gas deal with China, Putin is feeling more secure about pressuring both Ukraine and the E.U. The U.S. is already stretched thinly due to unstable con-ditions in its pullout from Afghanistan and the threat of deeper involvement in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic
State.President Obama and his
administration have handled the Ukrainian crisis badly because they have favored idealism over reality. The U.S. has pushed the Russian bear into a corner regarding Ukraine and the U.S. and the E.U. are likely to get badly mauled as a result. Now is the time to change direction to a policy that deals in real-ity, not ideals. If we don’t, we may be the ones swallowing the porcupine rather than Putin.
