COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE - FRENCH SUPPORTER SQUADRON

Year 2002 has just started and, already, it seems to be one of the busiest for the French Supporter Squadron. Important projects are legion and will give every-one a chance to participate to any of them.

• The airshows already include two great events: Epinal, and, a week later, La Ferté-Alais.• The L Bird project still requires funds. Look for Sponsors. If you find the right words, potential sponsors will be coop-erative and will show it by a generosity that will surprise you.• The visit of France by painter Roy Grinnell and his wife will, too, be very important, and will most probably take place during June and July, ending at the Duxford Airshow on July 14. If you wish to help, please make yourself known as soon as possible.• The recruitment of new members is at the top of our goals. Colonels or Associate Members, only one word: RECRUIT ! Do not hesitate to ask me for registration forms, I will be too happy to help.• The selling of the splendid poster designed by painter Jean Bellis, dedi-cated to american aircraft in french colors, will call for some of your energy. Talk about it around you because upon this sale depends the amount of money that we will receive. For a start, I hope that every one of you will buy one. You won't regret it !• The translation of the French Veteran Heritage Book will also call for the participation of those who master the english language. A few pages every month will greatly help this project.

As you can see, there is plenty to do. From these accomplishments will come a great satisfaction, a feeling that, I hope, many of our members will enjoy at the end of this promising year.

A Happy New Year Everyone !

AMERICAN AIRCRAFT IN FRENCH COLORS

The poster reproduced here has been designed by our friend Jean Bellis, and produced by Editions Escadrille in collaboration with the FSS. Available today, it repre-sents 37 of the 86 american air-planes that flew, during history, under french colors.

Printed on a strong 200 grammes/m2 paper, and measu-ring 61 x 81 centimetres (2'x2,6'), it is offered at a price of 9,20 ($ 8,20) for FSS members, and

12,50 ($ 11,20) for the others (Plus P & P).

Almost 8000 american aircraft of 86 different types were provided to the french forces since the end of the thirties. The following list was established by colonel John

PERSONALIZED JACKETS

If one had to choose one single word to describe our friend Hervé Cherry, there is only one that would fit him : Creator. But the truth is that this single word would hide his numerous talents which go from drawing to model making, and include history of aviation, collecting world war two aviators' uniforms, and painting on canvas, paper, and any other material like leather, the subject of this article. I almost forgot ! When Hervé does not practice any of these pass-times, he becomes a doctor specialized in bone joints, arthritis, etc… in the good city of Marseille.

The few samples of his leather jacket paintings printed here show how talented Hervé is. His latest creation is the representation of a B26 Marauder of Groupe Bretagne 2/20, a personal order from colonel Henri Bourrassier who, as everyone knows, was a pilot with this aircraft and group during WWII.

Hervé works like in the "good old days", that is to say with a brush, like artists aviators of this era used to do, since, of course, they did not use any airbrush or computer help.

The eye, the hand, and the three hair brush were their only weapons. Those of Hervé are terribly effi-

cient and show such a quality that one could easily believe that

his paintings are war-time ones. Of all the jackets presented here, the magnificent F4U7 Corsair of Flotille 14F is for sale 450.00 ($ 500.00) for CAF members, or 500.00 ($ 560.00) for the public. Made of blue leather, this jacket also bears two authentic and rare patches. We strongly advise all amateurs to order it from the FSS P.X. very quickly !

A SECOND PA22 IN FRENCH COLORSFLIES IN THE USA

Colonel Al Stubbelfield is Deputy Wing Commander of the Ms Wing of the CAF. He's just made a dream come true by decorating his PA22 in french colors (1st GALTOM). Another aircraft of this type bears similar colors (KA-B) and can be seen in Huntsville Alabama.

Al obtained a video filmed by a french Captain in the fifties. This film, probably made in Dakar, shows the plane in flight, on the ground, and being maintained. It also shows the fleet being blessed. Al also has a picture of a plane of this type taken in the Museum of Dax. The pictures printed here show how successful Al has been with this paint work. A honor for the french wings. Thank you Al !

Al, who proudly wears the FSS patch on his flight suit, is currently employed by WorldCom Telephone Co. as a security specialist. His past is directly related to law enforcement since he was a police detective in Jackson (Ms). Before that, he enjoyed a 31 years career in the military police, and finished it with the grade of Colonel. Several of his parents were pilots with the US Army and the US Air Force. Al, started flying 4 years ago. If you wish to contact him, please use the address below:

DEATH OF JAPANESE ACEMASAJIRO "MIKE" KAWATO

Recognized as one of the best japanese WWII pilots, with 19 confirmed kills and 17 war wounds, Masajiro Kawato was especially famous for being the one who shot down Gregory "Pappy" Boyington during a dog fight. Pappy Boyington was forced to bail out and was picked up by a japanese submarine, and finished the war in a prisoners camp. Kawato carried on fighting until one day, his two-seater zero was hit by flak during an attack on an australian destroyer, and plunged into the ocean. His observer was killed, and he was himself left for dead. He floated for three days and finally landed on the south coast of New England. For three months, he survived on sweet potatoes, snails, and small lizards, until, one day, he was captured and sent to a prisoners camp in Australia. Kawato had been declared dead by the japanese authorities, and when he returned home, he could not resist the pleasure to go and visit the altar where the funerals had been held. Kawato was then 20 years old, and it took him years to regularize his situation as a "living" citizen !…

His aeronautical career did not stop there and he became a captain with Japan Airlines. In 1976, after years of preparation and at the cost of an important personal investment, he established a record by flying solo with a single engine Piper Comanche from Japan to California. The flight lasted 35 hours and the distance was in excess of 5000 miles. Kawato was welcomed as a hero and received several awards.

Kawato wrote a book that tells his WWII experience, and whose title, "Bye Bye Black Sheep", somehow, makes the balance with the one written by Pappy Boyington, "Baa Baa Black Sheep" !… Boyington and Kawato met several times after the war, and became good friends. Masajiro Kawato died last December at the age of 76 in the town of Federal Way, Wa, where he has been living for many years.

The picture above is from his book. It shows him with his friend Gregory "Pappy" Boyington, and was taken during their first reunion. These two heroes now fly in formation in the paradise of the lost pilots. Good bye Masajiro Kawato…

Aviation lovers know that watching birds is the best way to learn to fly. Spectators of the Couhé-Vérac airshow that took place on July 22 last year were fascinated by the stars of this show : Christian Moullec, and his four cranes.

Christian Moullec is a meteorology technician, fond of ornithology. For years he has been fighting to save species of migrating birds.

Inspired by the excellent movie "Fly away home", Christian was there when these birds were born. They took him for their mother, and he educated them day after day. Christian played his role fully, and his ultra light allowed him to fly in formation with his "children" the day they were able to take to the air. The result is a show full of poetry which pleases all spectators from the youngest to the oldest.

In 1999, Christian, together with his wife Paola, flew more than 1300 Miles to the Baltic Sea, to promote the survival of the wild geese.

More than a thousand people attended this airshow, including myself and my three year old son, Théo, who was able to admire these airplanes for the first time. The future will tell if this event gave him the virus which is the common point of all CAF members. A future Cadet may be ?… One thing is sure, as you can see on the picture above, Theo found an airplane that would fit him perfectly: A half scale Corsair which was built by mister Michel Bousquet, a plane that I have already presented in the June 1999 issue of our Newsletter.

The small airfield of Couhé-Brux with its 3000 feet run-way looked pretty good, and its President, Jean-Claude Bossebœuf had many reasons to be satisfied.

There were many aircraft, mainly aerobatics ones like the TB30 Epsilon of the Cartouches Dorées team, CAP 232, Zlin, Yak 52, Extra 300, Stampe SV4, CAP 231, Morane Saulnier 733 Alcyon, Cri-Cri, and Yak 18T fitted with loudspeakers that played some music that the pilot used for his show.

Other quieter planes completed the show : Broussard, Nord 3200, Chipmunk, Piper Cub J3, Aircamper Torpedo J3, a half scale Corsair, and two helicopters, a Lynx of the french Navy and a Gazelle of the Army.

A parade made of 52 classic cars allowed the pilots to salute the public, and made a nice conclusion to the day.

If Warbirds were not legion, the planes of this aviation known as "light" had an irreplaceable charm that pleases all amateurs of these mod-est provincial airshows where friendship and fraternity are the rule.

I wish to thank the organizers of this airshow, the military and civilian actors, and the birds of Christian Moullec.

By the way, do you know the common point between these airplanes, these cars, and these geese ?…

AERO FRIERICHSHAFENText and photos: Eric Janssonne

Friedrichshafen, this charming german city located on the banks of lake Constance, near the ger-man-swiss border, is an impor-tant place for german aviation, equivalent to Toulouse for France.

There, was established the famous Count Zeppelin, and, in the thirties, the fabulous flying-boats produced by Dornier, which were used by Lufthansa.

It is, therefore, natural, that the Salon International de l’Aéronautique Générale AERO should be tradition-ally held in Friedrichshafen, where many aeronautical companies are very active. This show has nothing to do with the Le Bourget one. It is exclusively dedicated to private and business aviation, and, for some time now, to the small industry of classic airplanes (Production of replicas and restorations).

From April 26 to April 29, 2001, nearly 49000 visitors came to visit the booths set up by 28 countries, and the excellent airshow during the week-end.

In the static zone, located outside the airport, in addition to companies or associations specialized in engine and instrument restoration, one could see the booth of the Historischer Flugzeu-gbau which specializes in the building of replicas of the early age of aviation or WWI. These replicas are exact to the smaller detail except for the engine which usually uses Walter-Minor motors, more recent and reliable than the original. One could see two of their three current replicas: The famous 1913 Etrich Taube which terrorized the inhabitants of Paris in 1914, and the reconnaissance bi-plane Albatros B2.

The airshow during the weekend gave everyone a chance to watch Warbirds and Classic planes that are based

in Germany, in Austria, or in Switzerland, like the team of Bücker Jungmann, the air display of a german collector's Stearman, or a T6 duo flown by Walter Eichhorn and his son Toni who is well known by the french public since he used to fly a Buchon at the La Ferté-Alais airshow.

Among the Classic airplanes presented were a magnifi-cent Junkers 52 operated by Ju-Air, a DC3 Dakota flown by Classic Air, both coming from Switzerland, the Corsair owned by mister Christophe Jacquard, the CN760 of Jean Noan, the Mustang owned by a swiss collector, Max Vogelsang, the C3605 of the german museum of techniques of SPEYER, and the splendid B25 Mitchell belonging to an austrian collector in Salzbourg. One may regret that despite its very good condition, this B25 does not bear any decoration other than its current sponsor's Red Bull (This collector also owns a Corsair, a Widgeon, a T28, and finally, his latest acquisition, a DC6 !

In a few words, a very good static display and a well furnished airshow, in the romantic scenery of the Bodensee, the nickname given by the germans to the lake of Constance. Everyone was pleased and we hope that many more will come to AERO 2002, next April.

IT FLEW !

Colonel Eric Jans-sonne just sent us the great news: On December 21, 2001, the Swiss Supporter Squadron's Stinson L5 took to the air for the first time since it was reas-sembled. The plane,

registered N-121MC took off from the small airfield of Hausen, in Switzerland, at 14:04 precisely, and landed again after an uneventful flight. Our swiss friends made themselves a nice Xmas present. Congratulations to them all !

KARL BUTIKOFER HAS GONE WEST

Karl Butikofer has left. Victim of an illness, he suddenly went West last month. This terrible news will, no doubt, shock those who met him during his stay in Toulouse, last June. Everyone appreciated his extreme kindness, his modesty, his open mind, and his friendly - but strong - hand shake whose controlled force was really impressing !

Karl had expressed, on many occasions, his satisfaction to participate in the celebrations organized for the project Mission 441 - Lest We Forget. He had loved his stay and told us about it several times.

The French Supporter Squadron, on behalf of all its members, sent a message of sympathy to his family and told them how sad we all are. Our sincere condolences to Butch, his family, and his friends.

WARBIRD PICTURES FOR SALE

The advert published last month about the sale of warbird pictures could let one think that this operation was strictly personal. This, of course, is not the case, and we are happy to confirm that colonels Claude Requi and Bernard Delfino have donated the product of the sale of these pictures to the FSS L Bird project.

We wish to remind you that these photographs, size 30 x 45 cm, are sold at the outstandingly low price of

7,70 each (+ P & P if ordered by mail), which is half the price normally asked for this kind of pictures. Too many different ones are available to print a list in this Newsletter, therefore, we ask you to contact the FSS for any information you may require.

CAF LOGO

As opposed to what readers of the December issue of Contrails may have been led to believe, the publication of the new CAF logo and the article that came with it on page 1 did not mean that this logo would replace the CAF shield. These wings will simply be used on CAF forms and some letter headings. The CAF shield will remain unchanged, except that the word "Confederate" will be replaced by "Commemorative". The colonel's wings will remain the same as before.

NAME PLATES

You will find, in the January 2002 issue of Contrails, a form that will allow you to order your new Name Plate. This is particularly important for Life Members who must send in this form as soon as possible. Regular members may also use this form today, but if they don't, they will receive their new Name Plate when they pay their annual dues to the CAF (Which, of course, is not the case for Life Members).

THANK YOU !

Colonels Didier Cardinal and Claude Requi wish to thank all members who voted for them during the FSS elections for the renewal of the Board of Administration. They thank you for your confidence and will do every-thing possible to serve you during their 3 years posting.

L BIRD PROJECT

As you know, the FSS Board of Administration and several members are working hard on this project so that it has all chances to reach a full success. After all, if our swiss friends managed to do it, it would be surprising if we did not reach our own goal !

To that purpose, we need to know the name of members who are ready to give some of their time and energy so that, once the aircraft has been purchased, they are available for any aeronautical event, and for the plane's life on a day to day basis.

You will sometimes have to drive over long distances to reach the place where the plane will be stationed, and sacrifice at least three week-ends per year. Please note that you will need to fulfil your promises and you will be asked to help, which ever role is yours, and everyone will need to get his hands dirty to wipe off oil stains, or sweep the hangar.

Once you have declared your intention to participate, you will need to faithfully respect this moral contract. No defection will be allowed. If you wish to participate as a pilot, mechanic, or simple assistant, please make yourself known as soon as possible.
