Preach the Gospel at all times, when necessary use words.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi
May 13th through the 17th I attended the Festival of Homiletics in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In case you’re wondering what in the world “homiletics” means, it’s a fancy word for preaching. So, the festival is a yearly event where pastors from all different denominations come together to hear really excellent preaching and lectures about preaching. Each year there’s a theme and the sermons and the lectures explore that theme. This year we wondered together about “Preaching as Moral Imagination”. The planners invited preachers in at-tendance “to embrace, once again, their identity as those called to give voice to God‘s vision of goodness and mercy, to recover and re-imagine leadership in the church that seeks justice for all”. This is the second time I’ve attended the Festival. I went to San Antonio in 2017. What I discovered in 2017 and what was also true this year is that the Festival is a feast and you can’t possibly enjoy it all. There’s just too much to take in. In part because there are always two sermons and a lecture happening at different locations at the same time all week. So you literally cannot be present for all of it. Yet the preachers and teachers are all extremely excellent and so it is extremely difficult to choose who to listen to. (I opted to buy the recordings so I could listen to what I missed later and re-listen to what I loved again.)
I certainly hope you have heard excellent preaching in your life. If you have, you know that hearing the word of God proclaimed with passion and truth can feed your soul and make you reimagine the world in which we live. For preachers it can be a bit difficult to get your soul fed, especially if your own voice is all you ever get to listen to. I am blessed, because I get to listen to Pastor Kristi Weber preach every other Sunday, so I’m not the only preacher I ever listen to. Yet it was very good to hear different preacher’s voices, especially voices that have a
perspective very different from my own. To hear from preachers of color, preachers from different backgrounds and preachers from different denominations, was a gift. All these voices helped me to rethink my own perspectives and wonder how the Holy Spirit might be inviting me to step out of my comfort zone.
One preacher, William Barber II, said, “The disciples were hiding in the upper room for a long time until the Holy Spirit called them out on Pentecost. Some of you have been hiding in your own upper rooms, but it’s Pentecost now and the Holy Spirit is calling you out!” Another preacher, “Melva Sampson, spoke of all of the reasons why she HAS TO preach. “I preach because I cannot unsee what I have seen. I preach because I cannot I unhear what I have heard. I preach because my mama never told me to be quiet!” All of the preachers reminded me that we serve a God of grace who calls us to boldly proclaim that grace to all the world. Toward the end of the week I made the comment that “My cup is so full I'm standing in a puddle and my socks are soaked.” So I thank you, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you for the privilege to serve as your pastor. Thank you for coming to church on Sunday and listening to me preach. Thank you that you have supported my time away for this week of Continuing Education as I listened to excellent preachers and teachers. I think this week will enrich my preaching and I hope it will, in turn, bless you. Blessings, Pastor Susan Haukaas

Plan to attend this annual event
and bring a friend. Each woman in Trinity is asked to bring a large
salad by 10:00 a.m. and uphold our reputation
of having an attractive and tasty assortment of
fruit, vegetable, potato, taco, shrimp, pasta,
rice, and other salads to be “topped off” by a
delicious bar for dessert.
Proceeds will enable the Trinity Women of the
ELCA to continue its annual benevolence to
Head Start, Safe Shelter, Red Willow Bible
Camp, Salvation Army, Lutheran World Relief,
Lutheran Disaster Response, Perry Center, and
Lost and Found Ministries, as well as Bibles for
Trinity’s third graders, confirmation flowers,
holiday food baskets and kitchen upkeep.

Young at Heart will road trip to Fredonia
Thursday, June 20, leaving the church at 10:50
a.m. All seniors are welcome to join the outing.
Each participant will pay $3 toward the gas
expense. Anyone needing a ride to the church is
asked to call the office by 9:30 a.m.

Vibrant Ministry Special Appeal Update
During Trinity’s Annual Meeting in January 2019, the Council
presented plans for vibrant ministry at Trinity that would
require additional funding to fully support. The extreme cold,
wind, and snow of early 2019 has challenged Trinity with added
expenses for snow removal and lower offerings corresponding
to decreased worship attendance. In April, Trinity launched the
Vibrant Ministry Special Appeal.
Goal: $109,000 by May 30 Update: Received by May 28 $23,000
Thanks to your generosity,
Trinity has paid all past due expenses and is current with all regular ministry expenses.
Trinity has also paid down $2,800 of credit card debt and
Paid down $2,500 of a loan borrowed from Trinity’s Reserve Savings Account
Additional gifts for Vibrant Ministry have allowed Trinity to remain current with
spring ministry expenses.
Trinity is 1) sustaining current vibrant ministry with children and youth.
In June, Trinity’s Council will assess whether the congregation is financially ready to
2) begin enhancing vibrant worship by hiring a Director of Music Ministries, and
3) contract for replacing the roof of the education wing.

“God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and flowers and clouds and stars.”—Martin
Luther
Springtime and summer are a big deal in North Dakota. It is amazing to watch the prairie landscape awaken
after the barren winter months. Birds appear, the grass becomes green, and flowers, bushes and
trees burst with leaves and flowers. People are outside taking advantage of the longer days, warmer
weather, and sunshine.
We are consumed with enjoying all that the summer months have to offer. Families take vacations, kids
attend Bible and sports camps. We golf, we fish, we camp, we travel. Sometimes we miss worship.
As a reminder of God’s vibrant gifts, the Mission Resource Team distributed marigold seeds after
worship on May 19. Some seeds remain for you to take home and nurture as God nurtures us. It is
hoped that these bright flowers are a reminder of all of God’s gifts, and perhaps a gentle nudge to
worship when you can and support Trinity with your gifts as well.
Have a wonderful summer!!

To our Trinity Family,
Thank you for your loving and generous support and vigilant prayers during this year.
The 2018-2019 school/programming year was an amazing and full year for so many reasons. Throughout the
year, we had social and servant events on evenings and weekends and spiritual growth time on
Sundays, for both high school and middle school youth. We have had pizza get-togethers, movie nights,
hockey games, concerts, and Christmas shopping and wrapping for those less fortunate. Trinity’s Youth led Good
Friday worship and the Trinity Lenten project.
We participated in See You at the Pole (a national day of prayer), PULSE in the Barn, Middle School
and HighSchool CastAways and, of course, another group of outstanding young people was confirmed.
This year we also pulled off another meaningful JHS Baccalaureate service with our own awesome
group of HighSchool seniors and their counterparts from churches across this town. So many wonderful,
meaningful and fun things happened that we couldn’t possibly list them all.
Throughout this year and through all of the happenings, you have supported us and have loved us. We
are so grateful for another great year and most especially for you.
Here’s to summer!!
in HIM,
Kirstie Dobson and Trinity Youth
Sarah McDermid
Sarah McDermid has served as Trinity’s Director of Children’s
Ministries since 2007. It is with gratitude for her years of ministry and
with sadness for the loss her absence will bring that Trinity’s
Council received Sarah’s letter stating her intention to resign her
position at Trinity so that she can accept a new position as the
Spanish teacher at Jamestown High School.
A brief time of thanking Sarah was part of the last morning of
Faith Quest on Sunday, May 19. A fuller opportunity to publicly
thank her will be planned for later in the summer.
