About Appalachia

Page 2: Bon Appetit Appalachia!

When you eat locally-grown food, you are connecting with the people who planted, tended, and harvested it, the farming seasons and cycles of life in the Appalachian Region. Farm-to-Fork restaurants offer a link between farmers, farm communities, and ancient food-production practices, as well. If you’re curious to try delicious dishes that salute the food culture of Appalachia, the Region boasts countless options.

Nestled among green rolling hills in Hart County, Kentucky, Country Girl At Heart Farm is an eco-friendly farm and bed and breakfast serving delicious seasonal meals made from local, natural, and organic ingredients. Their Full Country Breakfast changes daily and is based on the innkeeper’s choice – usually beginning with fresh fruit hand-picked on the grounds. The Harvest Table Restaurant, in Meadowview, Virginia, was named the ‘Greenest Restaurant in the Blue Ridge region’, by Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine. Their philosophy and practice of operating as greenly as possible contributed to the designation, but the major reason is most certainly their commitment to offering diners local and sustainable meals prepared from the freshest seasonal ingredients they can find. There are a host of other farm-fresh restaurants and eateries to satisfy a visitor’s palette in this heritage-rich region of the country, as well.

In many parts of Appalachia, agritourism revolves around vineyards and wineries. The Southern Tier and Finger Lakes areas of upstate New York are home to more than 100 wineries and numerous wine trails.

Southeastern Ohio has the Appalachian Wine Trail which features eight wineries, many of which also provide local food and some, such as Heritage Vineyards Winery & Guest House in Warsaw, have lodging available, as well.

Virginia’s wine country is divided into regions across the state, three of which are wholly or partially in Appalachia – the Heart of Appalachia; the Blue Ridge; and the Shenandoah Valley regions.

The heart of White County, Georgia has always been known for Babyland General Hospital and Alpine Helen, but now visitors can enjoy the “fruit of the Vine” along the Unicoi Wine Trail featuring award-winning wines at Habersham Winery, Sautee-Nacoochee Vineyards, Serenity Cellars, The Cottage Vineyard and Yonah Mountain Vineyards.

With its varied climate and well-drained soil, Pennsylvania is home to a dozen or so wine trails (clusters of wineries), designed to give travelers a distinctive experience and showcase the diversity of the state’s winemaking traditions. One of them – The Lake Erie Wine Trail – is home to the nation's largest grape-growing territory outside of California. A drive through this scenic area will transport you to a bygone era, with friendly people, quaint Victorian towns, and some of the best wine Pennsylvania has to offer.

Western North Carolina has become such a wine-rich area that the Sustainable Appalachian Viticulture Institute was formed there in 2010 to promote the growing of cool-hardy and disease-resistant grape cultivars in the

23 mountain counties of the state.

Wine tastings and delicious local food make the wineries and vineyards of the Appalachian Region an enticing destination for visitors!

Appalachia has become rich with “agripreneurs” – entrepreneurs in the farming and food business. This includes hundreds of farmers, farm families and farm communities throughout the mountain region.

One agripreneur is Dale Hawkins, farmer and chef in Rock Cave, West Virginia. Hawkins has helped develop the “New Appalachian cuisine” using local ingredients and traditional cooking methods in new ways. Having organized a group of family farms in the area under the brand “Fish Hawk Acres,” he and his partners offer an extensive line of prepared foods made from local ingredients. Some items – such as chicken and beef pot pies – are cooked in beautiful Fiestaware bowls – which are also a West Virginia product, so even the packaging is local.

In Stokes County North Carolina, Keep Your Fork Farm owners, Rick Smith and Jane Morgan Smith, grow Black Winter Périgord Truffles, called “black diamonds.” They were part of the 2011 National Truffle Festival in Asheville and were also featured on Martha Stewart’s television program after she visited their farm. In keeping with the local food initiative in the area, the truffles are featured in the restaurant of a local Appalachian winery. The owners have a strong commitment to preserving the scenic beauty and sustainability of small farms in their area.

Other types of mushroom cultivation – especially shiitakes – and the gathering of wild mushrooms, such as morels, has become a growing niche food industry in this region. Visit one of these agripreneurs and see how they are keeping Appalachia’s heritage authentic and progressive.

Once the hop-growing capital of North America, Cooperstown, New York now boasts four breweries, a living-history farm museum, a world-class cider tourism destination, and two wineries, in addition to a sophisticated array of regional attractions, dining venues, and recurring festivals and events. Two Cooperstown destinations are featured on this map-guide: The Cooperstown Beverage Trail which is a hub for local craft beverage-making and tours, and The Farmers’ Museum, which preserves and depicts the region‘s rich farming heritage that has been integral to the economy for more than two centuries, well before baseball became America's pastime.

With the recent easing of state laws, distilling spirits – one of the oldest of Appalachian traditions – is making a comeback. Building on local assets of grain and fruit production, clean and abundant water, and a heritage of distilling lore, the Region has recently given rise to many new distilleries.

In Asheville, NC, Troy & Sons Distillery makes legal moonshine at Southern Railway Wheelhouse. Also in North Carolina, citing their Appalachian roots as their commitment to environmental and energy sustainability, the

Mauney brothers recently opened their Southern Artisan Spirits distillery in

their great-great-grandfather’s hosiery mill in Kings Mountain where they make Cardinal Gin from

organic ingredients. Stay tuned for their small-batch bourbon!

South Carolina’s revised micro-distillery laws led to the establishment of the Dark Corner Distillery in 2011 in Greenville. Using the name ascribed to the upstate area of

the state since the 1800s, the distillery makes 100-proof moonshine in a copper still. Housed in a historic building, they have a tasting bar and a museum dedicated to the history of that part of their state.

The Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine Distillery in Gatlinburg, is the first federally licensed distillery in the history of East Tennessee. The distillery is a family business that utilizes locally grown and milled corn that is transformed into such products as “Ole Smoky Original Moonshine,” “Ole Smoky White Lightnin’,” and “Ole Smoky

Moonshine Cherries.” If you are interested in seeing how it’s done, Ole Smoky offers distillery tours.

Experience one of the oldest traditions of this culturally-rich region by visiting one of its unique distilleries.

Farmlands form a patchwork along the Appalachian Mountain range, creating a quilt of rural authenticity. The Region’s agricultural tourism offers bountiful opportunities to glimpse country life, indulge in farm freshness, shake hands with local farmers and sample the foods they produce, and even get your hands dirty if you choose.

The Appalachian Region has long been known for its agricultural abundance. Local foods are treasures of global importance. Take a farm tour while visiting and bring the bounty (and knowledge) of the local food movement to your table! Many farms in the Appalachian region offer farm tours, fall festivals, farmstays, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and other local events.

For almost 20 years Belle Chevre, in Elkmont, Alabama, has been handcrafting fine French style goat’s milk cheeses. Tasia Malakasis founded the creamery and has developed award-winning recipes. Visitors to the creamery may take a self-guided tour with no call-ahead notice and learn the ins and outs of how the goat cheese is made.

Numerous farms in Appalachian Pennsylvania offer farmstays with an emphasis on farm activities and food for families. Mountain Fresh Creamery, in Clermont, Georgia produces all natural (no hormones or antibiotics), non-homogenized Milk, Chocolate Milk, Low Fat Milk, Buttermilk, Ice Cream, and Butter. They invite you to visit with and try their products that taste the way that nature intended them to taste!

Nectar Hills Farm, in the Central Leatherstocking region of New York State, raises grass-fed meats which are sold in their store in Cherry Valley and at regional and local restaurants, stores, and farmers markets, as well.

Sickler Farm, a 140-acre farm in Moatsville, West Virginia, grows spring flowers, vegetable starts, mums and pumpkins. They offer you-pick vegetables in the summer, hay rides, a pumpkin patch in the fall, and welcome farm visits.

Farmers markets are an integral part of the local food network throughout Appalachia. They embody an Appalachian food culture that embraces farms and establishments that are independent, sustainable and active. Farmers markets build, sustain, and help define community. These markets are a great way for visitors to connect with the people, land and culture of Appalachia.

The Farmers and Artisans Market, in Floyd County, Virginia, is sponsored by the SustainFloyd organization and is located in a timber frame pavilion constructed with wood that was harvested by a local horse logging company. The market features locally grown produce and handcrafts. While

shopping at the market, visitors are treated to music being played on the pavilion stage – one of many stages that are part of Floyd’s nationally acclaimed music festival, FloydFest, which takes place in July.

Western North Carolina Farmers Market in Asheville is another example of the way local food can engage the

community. This permanent facility offers space for farmers from all over the North Carolina mountain region and is the largest open-air market in the Southeast. Similarly, the Capitol Market in downtown Charleston, West Virginia, has both indoor and outdoor market space allowing for year-round visits and shopping.

Whether it’s the Athens Farmers Market in Ohio or the Gatlinburg Farmers Market in Tennessee, the Region’s farmers markets are great places to experience the culture and traditions of Appalachia.
