Transcript of Bomb Calorimeter
Course Code: MEF420L2 Program: BSME
Course Title: ME Laboratory 2 Date Performed: 02-03-14
Section: ME42FA4 Date Submitted: 02-27-14
Name: Laurente, James Aaron R. Instructor: Engr. Pampola
Conclusion:
Therefore, I conclude that a bomb calorimeter is a type of constant volume calorimeter. I have
learned that bomb calorimeter is used to measure a particular reaction of combustion fuels and
determines the enthalpy of combustion for hydrocarbons. I also learned the process happening
inside the bomb calorimeter; first it uses electrical energy to ignite the fuel then as the fuel is
burning, it will heat up the surrounding air, in which expands and escapes through a tube that leads
the air exposed to the calorimeter. When the air is escaping through the copper tube it will also heat
up the water outside the tube. Then, it’s the moment that the temperature of the water prohibits for
calculating calorie content of the fuel.
Recommendation:
In this experiment, I recommend you to carefully read all the procedures and safety guidelines
in order to avoid errors and accidents. Although bomb calorimeter is made in a very hard material,
always be aware that it literally explode inside the container and any amount of fuels placed inside it,
will react in various outcomes that might be dangerous if the fuel is in bigger amount; thus, this
experiment requires the help of instructors or any laboratory personnel who were knowledgably and
familiar to the operation of bomb calorimeter.
