Ojibwe wordof the month:
Bois Forte has collaborated with Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) in a pilot program to provide Transportation Highway Heavy Occupations Trainings for Bois Forte Band members. In addition to Band members, the training was open to descendants of a Band member who are not a member of a Band, and a Band member’s spouse who is not Native.
On April 9, 2019, classes for the Commercial Driver’s
License (CDL) Class A or B training was held at the Hibbing Community College and was at no-cost to the qualifi ed students. The usual tuition for this or similar classes estimate $4,000 per student, which is a signifi cant savings and incentive to participate in the program.
The CDL training was only three weeks in the classroom with 40 to 50 hours of behind the wheel instruction - classes were offered evenings and weekends so
students could participate while they continue to work.
Upon graduation, students have an entry-level earning opportunity of $85,000 per year. If you combine the entry-level wages of
the six graduates, together they would make $510,000 in one year!
A Graduation celebration was held on May 22, 2019, at Fortune Bay Resort Casino that included six graduates and
seven students who are in progress of receiving their CDL.
Dave Anderson, TERO Training Offi cer would like to congratulate all the students and send out his gratitude to: all the Union

Be Courteous to Your Neighbors While
Celebrating the4th of July Celebrating the 4th of
July usually means big fi reworks, little fi reworks, snaps,
crackles, and booms. However, there are neighbors who may be negatively affected by all of this. Remember, there are Ogichidaa (Veterans/Warriors) who have served this great country so we may keep our independence who deal with post-traumatic stress (PTS) and fi reworks can cause them extreme discomfort.
The bangs, booms, cracks, and whistles can cause some bad memories for our Ogichidaa who have served in combat.
According to a spokesperson at the Veteran Affairs, “A simple knock on the door to ask your veteran neighbor if it would be o.k. to set off fi reworks is all it takes.”
Ochichidaa with PTS and fi reworks, in many cases, are not a good mix. So, be a good neighbor and at least let your Ogichidaa know what you plan to do to celebrate the 4th of July, so they can prepare themselves... Better yet! Invite them over to join you.

Letter from EnrollmentDear Band Member:
For this upcoming 2019 Bois Forte Per Capita year, I would like to send out some reminders about the upcoming Per Capita payment.

Address updates are always due by July 31st.
The following information is taken from the July 7, 2017 Per Capita Policy:
• CHAPTER 1: GENERAL INFORMATION:o GARNISHMENTS
• All Per Capita payments are subject to garnishment if any money is owed to the Bois Forte Tribal Government, its entities and the Northern Eagle Credit Union. • Please refer to the Policy for Deductions from the Per Capita Payments to Bois Forte Band Members.
• CHAPTER 2: PER CAPITA PROCEDURESo ANNUAL ENROLLMENT
DETERMINATION • A. Per capita payments are issued to all eligible Band Members enrolled as of March 31st of that year. New enrollees after March 31st will not be eligible for that year’s payment. They will begin accruing or receiving per capita payments the following year. • B. Furthermore, to receive per capita payments, eligible Band Members must be living as of August 1st. If the Band Member passes before August 1st, their estate will not be able to receive their per capita payments. However, if they become deceased after August 1st, their per capita payment will be disbursed to their estate accordingly.
o SECTION 2: ADDRESS AND NAME CHANGES • B. Address Changes 1. To notify the Band of the address change, Band Members must fi ll out the Address Update Form, which can be picked up at the tribal offi ces or found online at www.boisforte.com and downloaded from the

Address changes are required to be in writing. The following must be included if Band Members are not using the prescribed form, full name including maiden name, date of birth, current address, signature and date. 5. If the Band Member is incarcerated at the time of per capita disbursement, the Band Member will need to include the OID (Offender Identifi cation Number) on the address change. If the OID number is not of the address update, proper delivery of the per capita payment is not guaranteed and may result in the payment being sent back to the tribal offi ce.

EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 2019Minnesota Goes Hands-Free
What can’t I do with my phone under the new law?You may not hold your phone in your hand. Also, a driver may not use their phone at any time for video calling, video live-streaming, Snapchat, gaming, looking at video or photos stored on the phone, using non-navigation apps, reading texts and scrolling or typing on the phone.
What can I do under the new law?The new law allows a driver to use their cell phone to make calls, text, listen to music or podcasts and get directions, but only by voice commands or single-touch activation without holding the phone.
Will this make the roads safer?Yes, as drivers are not allowed to have a phone in their hand, it’ll be easier for law enforcement to see violations and take more eff ective action.
