Water, broad lowlands, forest-rich plateaus, and small march

localities with half-timbered houses and brick buildings give

the landscape between Brandenburg on the Havel river,

Friesack, and Neustadt/Dosse an unmistakable face. The

sparsely populated Westhavelland with its scenic diversity has

a wealth of nature and culture to offer visitors. The nature

park, located around 70 kilometers west of Berlin, that opened

in 1998 belongs to the richest waterbody regions in Germany

and is therefore especially suitable for ecologically-friendly

water-sport tourism. The Havel, which begins in Mecklenburg,

flows into the Elbe after its circa 341-kilometer-long course

by Havelberg. The Havel is the lifeline of the Westhavelland.

The largest contiguous wetland area in the interior of Western

Europe is located here. Within the framework of the Ramsar

Convention 58 square kilometers of the park in Brandenburg

and Sachsen-Anhalt are placed under international protection.

In September 2005 one of the largest European river rena-

turation projects began under the auspices of the Nature and

Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU). It is projected to last

16 years. The planned measures should preserve the unique

Havel landscape, enliven the river, and make it more attractive

for visitors and guests of the nature park.

Formed by Water

Intercontinental Flights

In the nature park many threatened and highly endangered

animals and plant species find their habitat. The region plays

an important role in inter-regional migration of waders and

water birds. In the spring and autumn thousands of Nordic

geese and swans, cranes, ducks, and scolopacidae find the

necessary water and nourishing resting places on their long

migration routes. The magnificent ruff – the heraldic bird of

the nature park – can be observed here at its mating games

during the spring. Very rare meadow breeders – Black-tailed

godwit, Common Redshank, Eurasian Curlew, Common Snipe,

and Corn Crake – are breeding birds in the nature park.

Beavers and European otters are just as at home here as a

notable number of amphibians, fish, insects, and plants.

Bogs, Ländchen, and Land Seizure

The 1315-square-kilometer nature park is above all shaped

by the Weichselian glaciation, which ended over 10,000 years

ago. Powerful glaciers and meltwaters formed the landscape.

In the low-lying areas large moors and wetland areas arose:

the Haveland Luch (bog), the Rhinluch (Rhin bog), and the

Dossebruch. A unique feature of the Westhavelland are the

ground moraine plateaus and terminal moraine »islands« –

the so called Ländchen. Like large islands they rise out of the

lowlands and lent themselves therefore to settlement through

villages and cities. In the 7th century the Slavic Hevellians

settled here. They were so called after the Havel. With the

German conquest by Albert the Bear in 1157 settlers came,

including those, among others, from the Lower Rhin region.

Since the 18th century the boggy land has been largely

drained by dikes, pumping stations, dams, ditches, and the

relocation of the mouth of the Havel. The reclamation of the

Rhin and Dosse areas led Frederick the Great, upon an inspec-

Increasing land reclamation and a partially industrialized

agriculture led to a decrease in species and landscape diver-

sity. Today the Westhavelland Nature Park should serve the

site for specific and sustainable uses of both man and nature.

Flying Machines, Microscopes, Retorts

»The surrounds of Berlin are poor in good training grounds

for gliding. The ideal of the latter is formed in a hill with

drops on all sides of at least 20 meters. Between Rathenow

and Neustadt and der Dosse there is a stretch of land, the

so called Ländchen Rhinow, that contains a large selection of

such hills.« Otto Lilienthal – the »first pilot« – was often in

Westhavelland between 1893 and 1896 because he couldn’t

find in Berlin any suitable training grounds for his ever better

constructed flying machines. With his machines dismantled he

traveled by train and horse-drawn carriage to the Rhinower

Mountains. From Gollenberg near Stölln Lilienthal could al-

ready fly up to 250 meters. On August 9, 1896 he was caught

by a gust of wind. Falling from 15 meters he broke his cervical

vertebra and died the next day in Berlin. The pastor Johann

Heinrich August Duncker, born in 1767, is responsible for the

renown of his home town Rathenow as the »City of Optics.«

The multiple-lens grinding machine that he developed allowed

for the rationalization of eyeglass and microscope production

and was ground-breaking for the further development of optics.

In 1801 he founded the Optische Industrie-Anstalt (Optical

Industry Institute). The city of Premnitz was until 1914 still

a small fishing village. After 1917 it developed itself into an

industrial center. Since the 1950s Premnitz was the most sig-

nificant site for synthetic fiber industry in the GDR and for the

entire East European economic sphere. The industrial center

RathenowPremnitz is at this time becoming more active.

Discover the Westhavelland

The Westhavelland is rich in historic houses, churches, and

technical monuments. The city of Brandenburg, which borders

the nature park to the south and whose cathedral was begun

in 1165, is regarded as the cradle of the march Brandenburg.

Those sites that are worth seeing include the castles in Kleßen

and Nennhausen with their gorgeous landscape gardens,

the post wind mills in Bamme, Prietzen, and Ketzür as well

as Germany’s last two functioning needle dams in Grütz and

Garz. In the newly configured toy museum in Kleßen not only

the little ones get their money’s worth. In Liepe the estate

with its farm store, gardens, and Slavic fortress invites guests

for a visit. Equally a detour to the Brandenburg Pferdezucht-

Hochburg Neustadt an der Dosse (horse-breeding stronghold

in Neustadt an der Dosse) is fully worthwhile. The mummified

knight Kahlbutz can be »viewed« in the early gothic church in

Kampehl.

Those with literaral interests can follow the traces of Theodor

Fontane. The march poet took inspiration from the Westha-

velland that he worked into his famous novel »Effi Briest«

among others. Until the middle of the 18th century all ship

transport between Magdeburg and the march occurred over

the Stremme, a former main arm of the Elbe. Thereby all

ships had to pass by the Castle Mitow, from which the traffic

was controlled. Today the visitors’ center of the nature park

Mute swans are the true wild swans of temperate Central Europe. In autumn they are joined by whoopers and Bewick’s swans. They come from their breeding grounds in northern Scandinavia and west Siberia, having covered thousands of miles to reach their wintering locations.

In 1978 the Buckow nature conservation station (today the State Ornithological Station of Buckow) was founded. The personnel work on protecting the worldwide endangered Great Bustard, whose roosters can weight up to 17 kilograms. The emphasis of their research is on questions of conservation on cultivated land. From the observation towers near Buckow and Garlitz one can see the courting and breed grounds of the Great Bustard.

on the site opens its doors by transmitting much noteworthy

information about the Westhavelland. The staff of the Nature

Watch are out and about acting as »intermediaries between

people nature«. They are the first point of contact for matters

regarding species and biotope conservation, monitoring, natural

history tours and environmental education in the nature park.

And they help all those who have an eye and an ear for dis-

covering the wide expanses and the peace of the river valley

and lowland landscapes.

The unusual large church in the small Havel village of Strodehne was built in 1902/03. As of 1998 Strodehne has its fourth stork nest.

The 50 to 150-centimeter-long branched burr-reed grows in stagnant and flowing waters of cane brakes, on nutrient-rich, muddy soil.

Fishing on the Havel near Brandenburg is first documented in the year 1187, when the margrave Otto II left a part of the Havel to the cathedral chapter for fishing. Around 1900 typical river fish were still caught, including sturgeon, allis shad, and barbus barbus. They have long been absent from the Havel. Major fish of today’s Havel fishermen are eel, pike, and zander.
