description

A set of etchings that illustrate 33 lines of a sixth century poem. The poet Boethius was imprisoned and is visited by the lady Philosophy who resons with him in aseries of dialogues and poems. The etchings are hand printed in alimited edition set of 4. One set is in the Moeller Centre, Churchill College Cambridge. The etchings use a number of experimental techniques; aquatint and gouache lift, drypoint and traditional line etching, stencil, spray paint resist, clay resist open bite and plate tone wiping. The set is printed in one colour ink which varies from pale pink to deep clove brown according to the plate type used. The themes of the etchings loosely illustrate the Latin lines; clocks, chains, water, architectural fragements, Latin numerals, decay an texture and off cutsfrom the stencils all work to create links between the poem captions and the image above. Sometimes the link is just a rhyming shape or a playful pun.
