The title Iti kho bhikkháve means Thus it is, monks. Numerous teachings of the Buddha begin with these words. We translate the word bhikkháve as practitioners.

Introduction

This booklet comes with a CD containing ten buddhist chants. They are suitable for using on retreat. The profit of the CD and booklet will go to the Charity Metta Vihara for the purchase and setting up of an FWBO retreat centre in The Low Countries (The Netherlands and Belgium).

Chanting on retreat has become a tradition in the FWBO of the Low Countries. We choose a sutra as the theme for a retreat. Arthamitra, a professional opera singer, teaches the participants how to pronounce and chant the words (either traditional or his own compositions). Throughout the retreat we chant the sutra twice or three times a day, before or after a meditation or as part of a puja. This strongly supports our meditation, reflection and study. Each time the chanting gets a bit more beautiful, we open our minds further for the message of the Dharma and get closer to one another. The CD contains ten chants. In the booklet you will find the original Pali or Sanskrit texts as well as the English translation. You may not have an opera singer in your Sangha but you might have someone ‘with a mu-sical ear’. The CD and booklet will allow you to learn the chants dur-ing your retreat. The Low Countries is the name we use for The Netherlands and the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. The FWBO Centres of Amsterdam, Arnhem (The Nether-lands) and Gent (Belgium) work together quite closely. We publish buddhist texts in Dutch and organize study groups and retreats.

The Charity Metta Vihara was founded with this aim. The Charity organizes about twenty re-treats a year, produces leaflets and posters, finds retreat leaders, deals with the bookings and the finances, hires venues; transports cushions and mats, prepare the meals and so on. (www.mettavihara.nl) A Retreat Centre of our own would make all this a lot more efficient. We shortly hope to purchase our own property in the South of The Netherlands. As you can imagine the acquisition and setting up of such a place will require a lot of money. That is why we hope to sell a lot of CDs to Buddhists all over the world. This booklet is also available in Dutch. German and French versions are being planned.
