Hopefully your New Year’s resolutions are still intact to accomplish important things like improving your tennis game or acquiring some new gear. In the meantime, your club is healthy, financials are in good shape, and the membership roster has a waiting list. The long awaited mezzanine make-over is almost complete. Those of you who snuck peeks during the construction got to watch the transformation to a modern and more functional configuration. From all accounts the design has so far been well re- ceived. But wait, there’s more! New couches will arrive in May and will replace some of the single chairs currently in place. The Pro Shop is being constructed as to provide additional viewing of courts 4-6. Overall there’s better seating, slightly more viewing space, and more professional work facilities for the staff and pros. By the way, one of the old comfy blue couches found its way down to court 7, where it’s become a favorite seat for par- ents and kids watching lessons and junior classes. The club will be conducting a tennis academy April 29 and 30 for people with Down Syndrome and other special needs. Last year a dozen of these special athletes participated in the inaugural two- day event (picture below). Coaches and instructors will again be Murphy Jensen, a former French Open Doubles Champion, and Vince Schmidt, a coach to several ATP and WTA tour players, ac- companied by our own Head Pro Allan Overland. Last year the event was an unqualified success and truly inspirational to participants and specta- tors alike. The club is committed to providing opportunities for the membership to enjoy tennis. There are classes available for all junior and adult levels of play. There are leagues for singles and doubles of every conceivable combination, with many having open- ings for full-time players as well as subs. And of course there are tournaments, with the next one being the Memorial Day Senior Tournament May 26-29. See your new and improved front desk for more information on all these activities. In other club improvements, you will notice a televi- sion in the exercise room so you can watch tennis while working out on the exercise equipment. Hint: the HD Tennis Channel is 634. In another improve- ment, the club is replaced bulbs for court lighting and will be retrofitting some sections with LED fixtures as a pilot project. The French Open is only a month away. If you are attending, please send us a postcard or a selfie or something so we can be truly envious of your good fortune! Merci!

Welcome to Spring 2017.

From all accounts the design has so far been well re-ceived. But wait, there’s more! New couches will arrive in May and will replace some of the single chairs currently in place. The Pro Shop is being constructed as to provide additional viewing of courts 4-6. Overall there’s better seating, slightly more viewing space, and more professional work facilities for the staff and pros. By the way, one of the old comfy blue couches found its way down to court 7, where it’s become a favorite seat for par-ents and kids watching lessons and junior classes.

The club will be conducting a tennis academy April 29 and 30 for people with Down Syndrome and other special needs. Last year a dozen of these special athletes participated in the inaugural two- day event (picture below). Coaches and instructors will again be Murphy Jensen, a former French

Open Doubles Champion, and Vince Schmidt, a coach to several ATP and WTA tour players, ac-companied by our own Head Pro Allan Overland. Last year the event was an unqualified success and truly inspirational to participants and specta-tors alike.

The club is committed to providing opportunities for the membership to enjoy tennis. There are classes available for all junior and adult levels of play. There are leagues for singles and doubles of every conceivable combination, with many having open-ings for full-time players as well as subs. And of course there are tournaments, with the next one being the Memorial Day Senior Tournament May 26-29. See your new and improved front desk for more information on all these activities.

In other club improvements, you will notice a televi-sion in the exercise room so you can watch tennis while working out on the exercise equipment. Hint: the HD Tennis Channel is 634. In another improve-ment, the club is replaced bulbs for court lighting and will be retrofitting some sections with LED fixtures as a pilot project.

The French Open is only a month away. If you are attending, please send us a postcard or a selfie or something so we can be truly envious of your good fortune! Merci!

There are many factors that help you become a good tennis player. Proper technique, strategy and conditioning are important. Nutrition is often overlooked as a powerful factor in playing our best tennis. Poor nutrition and an inadequate pre-game meal can create a low energy level. A meal packed with complex carbohydrates and some easily di-gestible protein and fats is a great pregame meal. Nancy Clark is a registered dietitian (RD) and board certified specialist in dietetics. She wrote an article on the peanut butter and jelly sandwich as a super sports food in active.com. Not only did she think it would be good for fast digestible energy she also said “Peanut butter is a quick and easy way to reduce your risk of heart disease. Just slap together a peanut butter (and honey or jelly) sandwich on multi-grain bread, and you have the makings of a heart-healthy meal, if not a childhood memory. A quick and easy peanut butter sandwich is healthier, by far, than a fast-food burger or fried chicken dinner and far better than an equally easy "meal" of chips or ice cream. That's because peanut butter offers health-protective mono- and polyunsaturated oil. Trading burgers (saturated fat) for peanut butter sandwiches reduces your risk of developing heart disease. In fact, the more often you eat peanut butter (and nuts), the lower your risk of heart disease. (Hu, J Am Col-lege Nutr 20(1):5, 2001).” There are several articles out about how the National Basketball Association (NBA) athletes are eating peanut butter sandwiches as their pre-game meal. Russell Westbrook, known as the most energetic player in the NBA, eats a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as his pre-game meal. He likes his sandwich on toasted wheat bread, with a smear of butter added on the inside. Try to avoid hydrogenated oil in your peanut butter as well as all your food. And use either honey or cane sugar and avoid high fructose corn syrup in most of your food. Avoid processed foods and eat a good pre-game meal high in natural complex carbohydrates and easily digestible proteins and fats like a peanut butter and Jelly sandwich. You will then have access to a lot of good energy for your next match.
