The vehicle repair industry is full of dust and chemicals so ensuring exposure to health & safety risks are kept to a minimum is vitally important. A few of the important steps are discussed below.A basic step in safety is housekeeping, we are all busy people but ensuring the working environment is tidy and the floors and bins are cleared regularly can make a huge difference. Not only does the rubbish & mess look unsightly but it can be a huge fire risk – so take the simple steps and implement good housekeeping procedures.Lifting panels is part of the job but lifting of too heavy panels on your own can cause serious back problems. Always assess the size and weight of the panel and ask for help if you need I – take care of your back you only get one!

Personal Protective Equipment including overalls, gloves and face protection are an unquestionable must.

Eye protection is crucial to ensure you minimise the risk of eye damage from grinding, sanding and paint/solvent splashes in the bodyshop & workshop environment. A full range of safety glasses and goggles are available in the Bodyline range. For those who wear glasses, the lightweight safety spectacles are ideal as they are worn over your personal glasses.

Ensure that your paint coveralls are only used in the painting environment during painting tasks, when you have finished take them off. Continuing to wear them around the bodyshop, workshop & communal areas can result in the people around you breathing in the chemicals from the paint

you have just sprayed. In addition, the coveralls can become excessively dirty which could cause contamination in your next spray application.Paint leaves a spray gun around 100 metres per second. This creates a fan of visible paint and large quantities of paint mist that is invisible under normal lighting. This invisible mist behaves like smoke, spreading throughout the spray enclosure, surrounding the operator, soon after spraying has started. Once spraying stops, the paint mist is diluted and displaced by the extract air and eventually removed. The clearance time of the spray area should be checked and published on the wall, never lift your mask when you think it’s clear & safe to do so. The fine mists are invisible and being so fine they can find their way into your lungs. Typically, a booth clears in less than five minutes but a room can take 20 minutes or more!

None of the chemicals used in the repair process are safe to inhale. Breathing in isocyanate paint

mist can cause asthma and vehicle paint sprayers are 80 times more likely to get this disease than the general worker. Many people mistakenly believe isocyanates in vehicle paints contain cyanide and are poisonous – they don’t. All spray applications should be conducted in an enclosed environment with negative pressure. In addition, ensure you have a filtration system in place to capture the overspray and this needs maintaining. Spray mists should not be inhaled.

An Air Fed Mask is the only way to make sure you are safe in the spraying environment, not to mention it is mandatory. The air you breathe must be filtered and clean, you should have this regularly checked as dirty air can be very serious to your health.

So take the simple steps to ensure you are doing your part for personal health & safety.
