• Lakes are inland bodies of standing water.
• Most lakes were formed from glacier activity
Great Lakes
• The Great Lakes are some of the most known lakes in the United States.
• There are 5 lakes that make up the Great Lakes and they are relatively close together.
Lake Ontario
• This is the smallest of all of the Great Lakes.
• This lake is positioned at the base of the Niagara Falls.
Lake Erie• Has the smallest
volume of all the Great Lakes.
• Is the warmest of all the Great Lakes.
• Outlets into the Niagara River which flows to the Niagara Falls.
Lake Huron
• The first of the Great Lakes to be discovered.
• It contains 30,000 islands.
Lake Michigan
• The only one that is contained entirely inside the U.S. border.
• The largest body of freshwater in the United States.
Lake Superior
• The world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area.
• Contains more water than all of the other Great Lakes combined.
Oceans
• The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth.
• There are only 5 Oceans on Earth.
• The 5 Oceans are: Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Indian, and Southern.
Ponds
• Small lake, often in natural depression.
• Contains still, fresh water.
• Some are formed naturally and some are man-made.
Rivers
• Large stream that flows over land.
• Natural course of water, usually freshwater.
• All rivers start at the highest point in an area called the source.
Seas
• Seas can be attached to, or part of an ocean.
• Most people classify seas as part of an ocean.
