FROM THE RABBI’S DESK

YOU HAVE MORE TIME THAN YOU

THINK – WHAT DO

YOU WANT TO DO WITH IT?

Recently, my six-year-old daughter was filling out a fun journal she had received as a gift. After answering standard questions like “who is your best friend,” “what is your favorite food,” “what color do you like the

most,” etc. she came across the question, “who is your arch nemesis,”

a bizarre question for a children’s journal. Understandably, she had no idea what was being asked so she approached my wife, asking her what arch nemesis means.

My wife explained, of course you don’t have one, but arch nemesis means an enemy. Who do you not get along with? She ran off to continue to fill out the journal. Later, my wife saw the journal laying around and opened it up to see how my daughter answered. She was absolutely amazed at what she saw. In the blank for “who is your arch nemesis,” my six-year-old had written, the yetzer harah (voice of temptation).

While many of us are much older and more experienced, we fail to acknowledge or identify our arch nemesis – the yetzer harah. Some of us have the yetzer harah to eat unhealthy food or excessive portions; others struggle with greed or jealousy. Some have the yetzer harah to gossip and others to talk during davening. Some

have the yetzer harah to bend the truth and others lose their patience.

These and other common yetzer harahs have been well identified and much ink has been spilled providing encouragement and strategies to overcome them. However, there is a yetzer ha’rah whose temptation and seduction is only growing in our generation that not only have we failed to conquer, but in many cases we have failed to even name.

While technology was supposed to give us more flexibility and free time, as a point of fact, most people in today’s technological era feel they simply have no time. How many of us say we want to exercise, to read, to learn, to do activities with family and a myriad of other goals, but claim the impediment holding us back is that we have no time.

If you feel that way, you are not alone. A December Gallup poll found that 61 percent of working Americans said they did not have enough time to do the things they wanted to do. Ask someone how he or she is doing and you are likely to hear, “busy,” “crazy busy,” “insanely busy.” We have convinced ourselves that we are so busy that we simply have no time. But is that true?

To find out, time management expert and best-selling author Laura Vanderkam spent the past 12 months studying how she used her time during the busiest year of her life. On a spreadsheet broken into half-hour blocks, she logged the 8,784 hours that make up a leap year. In a recent article in the New York Times, “The Busy Person’s Lies,” she shared her results. It turns out, the stories she told herself about where her time

went weren’t always true: her life was not quite as hectic as she had thought, and she suspected the same was true for others.

She writes, “One study from the June 2011 Monthly Labor Review found that people estimating 75-plus hour workweeks were off, on average, by about 25 hours. I once had a young man tell me he was working 180 hours a week — impossible, considering the fact that this is 12 more hours than a week contains — but he felt tired and overworked, as we all sometimes do, and chose a high number to quantify this feeling.” She encourages us to track our time so that we can be honest and accurate with ourselves and how it is used. She concludes, “Life is full, and life has space. There is no contradiction.”

Long before time management experts, Rav Yisrael Salanter came to the same conclusion. He was once approached by someone who asked, “Rebbe, I only have fifteen minutes a day to learn. What should I learn? Chumash? Halacha? Jewish thought?” Rav Yisroel Salanter looked him in the eye and responded, “Learn mussar (discipline and character growth) and you will come to realize that you have a lot more than fifteen minutes a day to learn.”

So if we really have the time to do the things we say we want to do, why do we convince ourselves that we don’t?

Boca Raton Synagogue • Valuing Diversity • Celebrating UnityPage 3

In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we.

“Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • If you’re feeling unwell or perhaps coming down with a cold or flu, please do not come to Shul. It’s not right to possible compromise

the health of members and guests.• When the Shul is crowded, please take private articles off the seat next to you and invite someone to sit down. There is a coat room in

the lobby for hats and outerwear. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT

A Chassidishe Rebbe was once walking with his chassidim when it began to rain. He stopped, looked up and turned to his disciples and asked, “How do you know the sky wants to rain?” He then answered, “Because it is raining.” The students didn’t understand so they inquired what he meant. As they continued to walk he explained that if you want to know if someone wants to do something, see if they are doing it. We do what we want to be doing. If we aren’t doing it, we don’t really want to.

The Yid Ha'Kadosh, Rav Yaakov

Yitzchak Rabinowitz (Niflaos Ha'Yehudi, page40) says that we sometimes confuse wanting to do something with wanting to want to do something. It is in the transition from wanting to want, to actually wanting, that we begin to realize that we have time for what we want to do and we do it. Sometimes that transition just has to happen and other times we can inspire it and move it along. Either way, it is important in the meantime not to give in to our arch nemesis the yetzer harah and erroneously believe that the only thing holding us back is that we don’t have any time.

Sefiras HaOmer is a forty-nine day journey to time awareness. It is a system that encourages us to literally or figuratively log our time and have the discipline and strength to fill the spaces in it with what we claim we truly want to be doing.

Rabbi Efrem Goldberg

PARSHA SUMMARYEMORRules regarding Kohanim. Because of his privileged status, the Kohen had to maintain a particularly high standard of purity and perfection. Any physical defect disqualified the Kohen from officiating in the Mishkan, although he was still entitled to his share of the sacrifices.

Rules regarding sacrifices. Sacrifices, too, had to be free of blemishes. A mother and its young could not be killed on the same day.

Yom Tov. During the year, a number of days were designated as Yom Tovim. These holy days, on which no work is permitted, were proclaimed in the following order: Shabbat, Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Shemini Atzeret.

The Mishkan. The people were reminded of their duty to provide pure olive oil for the lamps of the Holy Temple, which were to be kept burning continuously by the Kohanim. The show bread was to be made of twelve loaves of fine flour, arranged in two stacks.

DID YOU USE THE ERUV LAST SHABBAT?As we all know, the Eruv is a vital necessity to our community. There is nobody in our community, younger or older, who doesn't regularly make use of our Eruv and take for granted its presence in Boca. However, now the Eruv needs you! Our funds are dangerously low. This makes maintaining the Eruv almost impossible. If you have benefited from our Eruv (which is all of us), not contributing towards its upkeep is simply wrong. We ask everyone to contribute at one of the following levels of membership annually:*Eruv Sustaining Member $500*Eruv Sponsoring Member $360 Eruv Supporting Member $180 Eruv Member $100 *(These levels of support enable one to sponsor the Eruv for a particular Shabbat, which will be publicized in the shuls throughout the community.) Contributions can be made through the Paypal link by visiting www.bocaeruv.org. Alternatively, Checks should be made payable to Boca Community Eruv Inc. and sent to Boca Raton Community Eruv, Inc., 7653 London Lane, Boca Raton, Fl 33433. The Eruv needs your caring support...JUST DO IT!!

BOCA RATON COMMUNITY ERUVThe Boca Raton Community Eruv is in need of funds. Yearly membership remains at $100 per family. It is now possible to sponsor the Eruv for a particular Shabbat for $360. Donations can now also be made through our website www.bocaeruv.org or by contacting Chani Salamon at (561) 392-1026 for more information. Please help, as we ALL benefit from the Eruv. The Eruv is something we all rely on and often take for granted. If you have not yet contributed, please consider doing so in order to ensure that the Eruv can be checked and maintained.

BIKUR CHOLIM Visiting mourners takes precedence over visiting the sick. If there is even the slightest concern that not visiting the Choleh will cause him potential harm, visiting the sick takes precedence over comforting mourners. Source: Chelek 5, Ramat Rachel, Perek 19.

SOCIAL ACTIONScore two more victories for the anti BDS movement: • The New Jersey State Senate, this week, unanimously passed legislation that would prohibit state pension and annuity funds from being invested in companies that boycott Israel or Israeli businesses. The legislation gives the state Division of Investment, which manages the $80 billion pension system on a day-to-day basis, up to 18 months to get rid of stakes in any company that “boycotts the goods, products or businesses of Israel.” With the passing of the legislation, New Jersey joins several other states that have passed similar laws in recent months. These include Virginia, Arizona, Indiana, Florida, Tennessee and New York. South Carolina was the first state to sign an anti-BDS measure into law in June 2015, but it does not mention Israel specifically. • United Methodists who wanted their church to sanction Israel saw four divestment or investment screening resolutions rejected over the weekend by a committee at their denomination’s General Conference. Opponents of the resolutions decried anti-Semitic

elements within the BDS movement and its failure to address Palestinians’ role in the continuation of the conflict.

The korban ha-omer is unique in a number of ways, not least of which is its name. An omer is a measure of volume, equivalent to 2.49-4.30 liters. While all other korbanot have specific names (e.g., olah, shelamim, shetei ha-lehem, minhat mahavat, etc.), why is this particular korban called by its measurement? The Midrash Rabbah notes an interesting parallel in that an omer’s worth of food is also the amount of mann that fell each morning in the Desert that was allotted to each person. R. Yosef Salant explains that in the Desert, Bnei Yisrael subsisted completely on the mann. They didn’t work and their dependence on Hashem was obvious each day. When they entered Israel however, everything changed. Bnei Yisrael now needed to work the land and take care of their own needs. Hashem’s direct involvement in their sustenance was less obvious although no less real. Sefer ha-Hinnukh explains that the korban ha-omer was brought from the first grains of that particular year to remind us that each year, Hashem takes care of all of our sustenance. In fact, all grain that had grown in the previous year was forbidden until the korban ha-omer was brought (or today, at the end of the 16th of Nissan). We may have worked very hard in working the field, but it is really Hashem who determines whether or not our toil will bear fruit. The relationship between the two is that both inculcate within us the firm belief that Hashem is the source of our sustenance. R. Salant notes that is for this reason that the korban ha-omer was brought on the 16th of Nissan. When Bnei Yisrael entered Israel, it was precisely on the 16th of Nissan that Bnei Yisrael no longer ate mann and began to eat from that which they grew themselves.

While Sefirat ha-Omer was originally a joyous time, connecting the holidays of Pesach and Shavuot, throughout history, it has taken on more mournful tones. The Gemara (Yevamot 62b) notes that it was during this period that the students of Rabbi Akiva died and during the Middle Ages, it was the period during which the crusaders destroyed and devastated many Jewish towns and lives. In commemoration of these losses, Jewish practice has been to refrain from getting married, getting haircuts, shaving, and listening to live music during the period of Sefirat ha-Omer. There are various accounts of when exactly the students of Rabbi Akiva died, leading to various practices regarding the timing of the mourning practices. The Shulhan Arukh adopts the approach the Manhig as most accurate, indicating that they died from Pesach until 15 days before Shavuot. The last day in which the students died—and through which the mourning practices should be followed—was the 34th day of the Omer, the 19th of Iyyar. Regarding shivah and sheloshim, we adopt a principle of מקצת היום when an minhag of mourning was practiced for part of the—ככולוday, it is considered as if it was practiced during that entire day. This is why a person gets up from shivah on the morning of the seventh day and ends sheloshim observances on the morning of the 30th day. Similarly, while the mourning practices of Sefirat ha-Omer are in effect through the 19th of Iyyar, invoking מקצת היום .we lift these restrictions on the morning of the 19th ,ככולוWhen the 19th of Iyyar occurs on Friday and a person will be unable to shave or get a haircut on Friday after shaharit, he may do so on Thursday night after nightfall, לכבוד שבת קודש.
