Jewish Time

When it comes to money, if we run low, there are ways in which we can try to replenish. If we work harder maybe we can always earn more

and, therefore, have more money to spend. But when it comes to time there is nothing we can do to earn more. If it is wasted, it cannot be made up. There is a limited amount of it allocated to each one of us and with every passing second we come closer to emptying our account.

Despite its preciousness and irreplaceability, we tend to bring a casual attitude towards it, wasting it, and some even choosing to kill it.

Urban Dictionary, a web site dedicated to cataloging modern phrases and idioms, defines “Jewish time” as follows:

Not perfectly on time; possibly somewhat late, but no harm is done as a result. The implication is that there is no need to be exactly on time, and starting a little late is acceptable.

When an event is schedule to take place at 2:00 Jewish time, it could be at 2:15 or even 2:35, and everyone is satisfied.

“The wedding will start at 6:00 PM Jewish time.”

Of all people, we are to have an acute time awareness and profound appreciation for the value of time.

Indeed, the very first mitzvah of the Torah, the first commandment that we received as a people, is to value time. “God said to Moshe and Aharon – This month shall be for you the

beginning of the months; it shall be for you the first of the months of the year.” With this commandment comes the privilege and responsibility to control the Jewish calendar through testimony of the new moon and the determination of the human court of when the month begins and consequently when our holidays fall.

For two hundred and ten years, as slaves in Egypt, our people had no control over their own time or their own destiny. Our taskmasters and oppressors determined how we spent every single moment. It is specifically at that point, when the Jewish people are on the cusp of attaining freedom that we are given the commandment about time. At the core of freedom is the ability to be the arbiters and determiners of our own time. Freedom and time are intertwined.

Time awareness is at the core of our humanity and is the responsibility of freedom. Being relaxed about punctuality, running late, and having a casual attitude towards start times, is not Jewish time; it is the antithesis of the Jewish notion of time. Wasting time is tantamount to burning money, and killing time murders possibility and potential.

Being Late is Self-CenteredIn a fantastic article in Forbes, “5 Minutes Early Is On Time; On Time Is Late; Late Is Unacceptable,” Brent Beshore shows how disrespectful, inefficient, and self-centered it is to run late. He writes:

• Disrespectful: Being on time is about respect. It signals that you value and appreciate the other person. If you don’t respect the meeting’s participants, why are you meeting with them in the first place?

• Big-Timing: Intentionally being late is about power. It’s showing the other person, or people that you’re a “big deal” and have the upper-hand in the relationship.

• Incredible: No, not in the good way. When you miss meeting times or deadlines, your credibility takes the trajectory of a lead balloon. If you can’t be counted on to be on time, how could you possibly have credibility around far tougher tasks?

• Unprofitable: Let’s consider a scenario where five people are holding a meeting at 2 p.m. Your sauntering in ten minutes late just wasted 40 minutes of other peoples’ time. Let’s say the organization bills $200/hour. Are you paying the $133 bill? Someone certainly is.

• Disorganized: If you can’t keep your calendar, what other parts of your life are teetering on the edge of complete disaster? Being late signals at best that you’re barely hanging on and probably not someone I want to associate with.

• Flaky: Apparently some people just “flake out,” which seems to mean that they arbitrarily decided not to do the thing they committed to at the very last minute. Seriously? That’s ridiculous.

• Megalomaniacal: While most grow out of this by the age of eight, some genuinely believe they are the center of the universe. It’s not attractive.

Beshore concludes: “Paying attention to punctuality is not about being “judgy,” or stressed. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It makes room for the

Seven years ago, Boca Raton Synagogue launched the Pillar Society for those members that wish to help our synagogue continue to offer the highest possible level of educational, religious, and social programming to our community. The Pillar Society provides a backbone to our community, and your commitment enables the Shul to provide for the needs of all our members, regardless of their ability to pay.

Boca Raton Synagogue would like to thank the families that have already committed to the 2017/2018 Pillar Society.

We appeal to you and others to become members of The Pillar Society – to be the leaders of Torah, Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim in our community.

q THE 2017-2018 PILLAR SOCIETY qCAMPAIGN IS NOW UNDERWAY

• Emerald Pillar $25,000• Diamond Pillar $18,000• Platinum Pillar $12,000

• Gold Pillar $6,000 Sapphire Pillar $4,000

(for Families age 70 and over)• Silver Pillar $3,600 (for Families ages 36 and under)

General Membership• Family Membership $2,000• Single Membership $1,200

In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. • Men should not enter the Women’s Sections during the Services• Please do NOT walk towards to exit during Kaddish... Even if you don't walk out, it is insulting. All of these Mensch Messages have been submitted to the office. If you have a Mensch Message you would like us to promote, please email us at [email protected]

In the spirit of our mission “Valuing Diversity and Celebrating Unity,” we believe that a community is built on the collective engagement of individuals representing differing perspectives, whether religious, political, or social. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L”Shem Shamayim,“ for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we.

“Derech Eretz,” good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a “safe place” for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior.

Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue.

BOCA RATON SYNAGOGUE DERECH ERETZ STATEMENT

caring, considerate, thoughtful people I want in my life, whether that’s friends or colleagues. Think of how relaxing your life would be if everyone just did what they said they’d do, when they said they’d do it? A good place to start is with yourself and a great motto is something I was taught as a child: ‘5 minutes early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable.’”

Of course being late will happen. We run into emergencies and unexpected,

uncontrollable circumstances. But is being late an exception or the rule? Are we ashamed when we are late and do we apologize and take responsibility, or have we become so habituated to not being on time that we no longer even notice?

While we can’t expand or slow down time, we can make the most of it and value each moment. By learning to manage this most precious commodity, we will in fact have won much more

than the lottery.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Efrem Goldberg

A CONTINUED CALL TO ACTION TO BRS MEMBERSWe would like to thank you all those that have signed up to assist us guard our gates, but we are still short in numbers.

The only way we can ensure unwanted guests don't enter our premises is by men and women from the BRS community standing with our External Security guards and checking who comes in.

We only need volunteers to commit to two 30-minute shifts once a month on Shabbat. Training is simple and includes an easy-to-follow training booklet.

Our Rabbis have all signed up as have many of our Board of Directors members. Please sign up by contacting Samy Dwek at [email protected]

Then join the new BRS Mi’Dor L’Dor initiative. Under the leadership of Seema Loskove, volunteers will be matched with members of our community who could use some extra assistance and companionship to visit, check in, and help when needed. This will not take a lot of your time but will go a long way to ensure that every member is properly cared for and attended to. If you would like to volunteer or if you could use some extra help, please contact Seema Loskove at [email protected]

SETUP YOUR RECURRING PAYMENT PLAN TODAYPlease be advised that the new fiscal year for the Shul has begun! From now through July 31, all payment plans will be divided over the full 12 months. For those completing your adjustment forms, we make the following request: please reconsider how much assistance you need, whether you can become a full-paying member, or, if not, whether you can increase the amount of dues you are paying by 25% over last year. As an example, if last year, you paid $800, please consider increasing the amount of membership dues to $1,000. For those who cannot make the increase, the Shul will make the necessary accommodations.

Can a telephone call to a patient fulfill the Mitzvah of Bikur Cholim: According to Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, it doesn't satisfy three major aspects of the Mitzvah as noted in the Tur (355), but, if someone cannot personally visit the patient, calling him on the phone at least partially fulfills the Mitzvah.

SOCIAL ACTIONFollowing the recent passage of a resolution to declare the Cave of the Patriarchs and the Old City of Hebron to be “world heritage sites in danger”, and under the authority of the Palestinian Authority government, the World Council of Independent Christian Churches is calling on member states of the United Nations to defund the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).“Instead of protecting our shared history and values, UNESCO has become the mouthpiece for global Jew Hatred,” the organization said in its release. “Their latest motion which suggests that Hebron and the Cave of the Patriarchs are Palestinian Heritage sites is both pathetic and offensive to history and the billions of Jews and Christians worldwide. There can be no place for such hatred within a world organization that exists to foster peace and understanding and protect history. It’s time to defund UNESCO once and for all.” Kudos to WCICC for taking a principled stand on this issue. UNESCO has been a platform for the promotion of anti-Israel rhetoric for quite some time, criticized by the Director General of UNESCO itself Irina Bokovo, US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, and by a number of UN Secretaries General including the recently elected Antonio Guteres.

שבת פרשת פינחסShabbat Parshat Pinehas

When counting Bnei Yisrael as they are about to enter the Land of Israel, the Torah lists them by family. In doing so, the Torah uses the family’s patriarch’s name as an adjective for the entire family – the חנוך (Hanokh) family is describes as החנוכי (ha-Hanokhi), the פלוא family as הפלואי, etc. Rashi comments that this particular grammatical syntax was employed – starting each name with the letter ה and ending it with a י – so as to hint to one of the names of Hashem (yud-heh). The reason for this was that outsiders challenged Bnei Yisrael’s reliance on the certainty of their heritage. After all, when Bnei Yisrael were slaves in Egypt, their Egyptian masters were in charge. How could they be so certain about the purity of their lineage and heritage? As a response, Hashem attached His name (yud-heh) to each family’s name.In explaining why Hashem chose this particular Name to attach to each family’s, Maharal explains that this is the same name that unites man and woman. In Hebrew, the difference between a man, איש, and a woman, are the letters yud and heh. As the Gemara (Sotah 17a) explains, if a ,אשהman and woman are righteous, then Hashem’s name dwells among them. However, if they do not live a life of sanctity and don’t allow for Hashem to enter their lives, then they are left only with אש – fire.Hashem specifically added the very Name that testifies to the sanctity of marriage to the names of these Jewish families. Technically speaking, it may have been sufficient for the Torah to merely list each family and its lineage, as proof of their heritage. However, as a testament to the holiness that Bnei Yisrael infused into their marriages even under the harsh Egyptian oppression, Hashem chose to further sanctify and elevate their holiness by adding His name to theirs.

The berakhah of בראשית מעשה is intended to express our עושה acknowledgment of Hashem’s authority and power of managing and maintaining this world. In doing so, we recognize that Hashem’s control of the natural world is an extension of His having created the world, and hence the berakhah of עושה מעשה בראשית – He who makes [in the present tense] the work of creation. It is recited not only on seeing lightening, but also on a shooting star (only once per night), when experiencing hurricane or gale force winds, or an earthquake.Similarly, if a person sees large mountain ranges that he or she finds to be an inspiration experience, they should recite בראשית מעשה So too .עושה it is appropriate to recite this berakhah when seeing an ocean or one of the four rivers mentioned in Parshat Bereishit (Gihon, Pishon, Hidekel and Perat). These berakhot are only recited so long as the person hasn’t seen that particular mountain range or ocean in the last 30 days. The Shulhan Arukh records a special blessing as well upon seeing the ים There is some debate in the Poskim as .(Yam ha-Gadol – the Great Sea) הגדולto whether this refers to the Mediterranean Sea or only to the Atlantic (and presumably the Pacific and Indian) Ocean. While the Mishnah Berurah assumes that it only refers to an ocean, Rav Ovadiah Yosef writes that it is appropriate to recite this berakhah upon the Mediterranean Sea as well.

Outstanding. Amazing. Phenomenal. Following two years of examining more than 1,200 aspects of its medical care and administration, these words were used to describe Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem. Shaare Zedek is now Jerusalem’s first and only academic hospital to earn this prestigious designation. The evaluators reserved special praise for Shaare Zedek’s attention to patients’ emotional needs and rights — no surprise at the Hospital with a Heart. And their report describes our operating theaters, NICU, laboratory, research and many treatment areas as among the best in the world. For 115 years, we have believed that Shaare Zedek offers the gold standard of care in the heart of Jerusalem. Now we have proven it.
