I hope the Memorial weekend was one of remembrance and relaxation for you and your family. It was somewhat better with the new fireworks law in place for the holidays. Our May general meeting was a full house and we welcomed several new Village neighbors on Bishop, Harvard, Grayton and Outer Drive. We welcome you and appreciate your choice to be here with us in East English Village. We had several guest speakers covering current topics and we also met our new DPD Captain Mike DiCicco Our June special guest speakers will include Ms. Shannon Haas – Building manager for the Guard-ian Building, Mr. Terry Martin from Detroit Building and Safety, Wayne State University President - Mr. Roy Wilson, and Mr. Jared Berbas, - Goosehead Insurance, J&J Insurance Consultants. The past month has been quite a challenge due to the weather – many lawns were overdue for cut-ting and plants were delayed from coming to full bloom because of the rain and colder temperatures; hopefully we are back on track. Please remember to cut both the front yard and the back yard on a consistent basis - backyard entertaining with your BBQ goes much smoother with your lawn in check. Please remember due to 2017 City of Detroit ordinance – all BBQ’s etc. must be in the back yard – they are not allowed in the front of your home, on the front porch and/or on the side driveway. Another quick reminder – having basketball hoops on any street is not allowed by City code. The city of Detroit has added two basketball courts to Balduck Park last summer and has installed

basketball courts at Messner Park just east of Cadieux. It’s a City of Detroit rule not to play basketball in the street. It’s a pleasure to report that even with summer upon us – residents are well underway redoing land-scaping and planting flowers in time for the upcoming landscape contest in July. I would like to thank the caring residents that have helped each other with cut-ting grass at Emma House proper-ties this past month. It’s been a very tough month – please con-tinue to reach out to each other on your block and take action if grass needs to be cut. EEV has mow-ers to lend at no charge – contact residential chair Kathy Roddie for further in-formation and where to pick up the mower. All we ask is that you supply the gas and check the lawn before cutting so our mower blades stay sharp. Please be aware we have had issue with illegal dumping at Berden and Yorkshire. The proper-ties in question are owned – most of the dumping is coming from a very few Yorkshire residents on that block – please take the time to correct it now. We will be visit-ing several blocks that need some assistance in the months of June and July to see how we and the City can be of assistance to im-prove the overall area! In May we had the privilege of providing a wided variety of snacks for the 5th precinct for Na-tional Police Appreciation Week.

We thank them and the Fire Department for keeping us safe and for being great and engaging partners here in EEV.EVENT ALERT!!! Our annual EEVA Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, JUNE 22nd and JUNE 23rd from 9:00 to 5:00 pm. It’s a great way to clean out and start anew with regard to decorating or making room in the garage and basement for all the things you want to keep but have little room for! Please contact Kathy Roddie (residential@eastenglishvillage.

org) for details. If you can lend a hand for the garage sale this year and/or need additional information. We expect all who participate in this Village event to help with the cost of advertising –its $5.00 per day. Registra-tion information is on the front page of this issue! Please remember we are collecting for the 2019/2020 snow removal season and it’s time again to

help pay for the private security – Pay Pal is available. At our June meeting we will also review the current City of Detroit directed BS&E rental inspection program – all rental properties were to be registered with the City of Detroit by June 1st, 2018.We will review the NEZ program. Please have a safe and Happy 4th of July – please be aware of noise levels in the area – we all want to have a great time celebrating our country’s freedom. Please have a safe and Happy 4th of July.

2019 Motor City Clean Up A BIG SUCCESS!!!

Our annual Motor City Make Over was held on Saturday, May 11, 2019. We had a perfect day to com-bine our cleanup efforts this year with volunteers from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan! Numerous EEVA residents and BCBS employees along with their kids helped us tackle a few bad spots in EEVA. The biggest challenge was the vacant lot located on Grayton and East Warren. Grass was cut, trash picked up and big items removed - please note the pictures – a BIG thanks to Kathy Roddie, our residential chair and to Christie Laster, BCBS Community Liaison for coordinating the very fun event – we made a difference again this year with your help!

Thank You!

PRIDE MONTH

East English Village prides itself on the diversity of our com-munity, one of the most racially mixed neighborhoods in the City of Detroit - a place where civil servants, blue collar workers, retirees and professionals from different ethnic groups, religions and sexual orientations have all found a welcome place here. The purpose of the commemora-tive month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.Pride events welcome allies from outside the LGBT community. Parades and other celebrations are opportunities to show sup-port, to observe, listen and be educated.

Saturday Walking ClubOur Walking Club is starting back up on Saturdays.

Join us at 4240 Kensington at 9:00 to 10:30 as we walk the vil-lage. We post on the East Eng-lish Village Facebook page with details and reminders. All are welcome!
