Boat Rally News
A message from our event Manager
Hello Rally goers!
Rally 2020 is just around the corner now and my word she is shaping up to be something special.
If you’ve been watching our Facebook Group, you may have seen that entrants are already on their way to
Paynesville from Queensland, Adelaide and Tasmania! We have literally hundreds of entries
Our feature ship Coral Trekker has set sail from Sydney Harbour making her way down the East Coast and
looks set to cross into local waters on the 26th all things being equal and winds in our favour. You can
actually follow her journey on Marine Traffic. Just enter Coral trekker and she’ll pop up.
You can also book tickets to cruise aboard Trekker whiles she’s here – tickets can be purchased at
https://trybooking.com/BIOFE
In the next few days you’ll be receiving all your information about arrivals, registration, briefings and on
water events. Please read all information carefully, and if in doubt, just ask one of our committee or
volunteers when you get here.
There have been some fantastic editions to our program this year, the powerboat demonstration is sure to
be a hit, we have some Moomba Classics appearing on the water for the first time since the ‘80’s, guest
speakers in the Yacht Club through the weekend include Ian Smith and Dr Kate Robb – discoverer of the
Gippsland (Burranan) Dolphin.
Ian Smith is the founder of the Sydney Wooden Boat School.
He’s involved with the Australian Historical Sailing Skiff Association
which preserves the history of the Australian Open Racing Boat, and
built and races his own historical 18 footer replica Britannia with the
historical fleet at the Sydney Flying Squadron.
Dr Kate Robb is the Founding Director
and Head of Research at the Marine
Mammal Foundation. Her research led
to the formal description and naming of
a new Australian species of dolphin.
We’re also very proud to be honouring our longstanding fishing
heritage with a special dedication called Fishermen’s Farewell.
The local fishing industry has been devastated with the news
that commercial licenses have been revoked across the
Gippsland Lakes from April. Commercial netters have fished the
region since the late 1800’s. To mark their history we have
invited them along and created a dedicated Fishing boats
display on water. You’ll be able to see demonstrations of net
casting, sample fish caught off the boats, hear talks on the history of fishing in the Lakes and in a very
special dedication, we will have the fishing boats close off Saturday’s Grand Parade in farewell.
On Friday night you will be able to collect your registrations, numbers for the Grand Parade (please do not
attach these to your boat until after safety briefing on Sat), collect any merchandise ordered and, if you
wish stay a while and listen to our keynote speakers Marty Woods of the Coral Trekker telling tall tales and
true of her history and journey to Gippsland; and the Hon Tim Bull MP, not just some Pollie but also a
member of one of our longstanding and well loved boating families.
Saturday, dress up your boats, pull on your best boat shoes and get ready for the Grand
Parade. We expect around 300 boats to take part, so this will be something spectacular.
After the parade, kick back and enjoy the rally, go for a wander and meet other
participants or relax to the melodies of our entertainers and grab lunch on the grass.
Over in Vendor Alley by the on land boat display, you’ll find vendors of all things boating
related. Take a wander through our trailer-sailer section, then head to the other end of the rally, past the
ferry and check out the classic car display!
Saturday night brings our dance, the last few tickets are available at trybooking.com search Soultanas and
grab your ticket fast!
Then Sunday our feature events include the Parade of Sail, a gorgeous fleet of sailboats making their way
along the straits – a real treat to see them on the water together.
There’s so much left unmentioned…. But that’s okay we’ve attached a program for you with this newsletter!
A few housekeeping things before I sign off –
- Don’t forget our great ‘Best of’ competitions have prizes valued at $500 this year!
Best classic boat Best decorated boat
Best restoration Best presented boat
- All participants must register UPON ARRIVAL to sign in, collect your registration bag and be
directed to your weekend position.
- Committee Members will be dressed in TEAL SHIRTS. Volunteers will be wearing RED. Please
feel free to speak to either volunteers or committee members if you have any questions. At all times
a committee members word is final, for the safety and flow of the event.
- We are attempting to make sure a few food trucks are available for your arrival on Friday,
particularly in the early evening. Restaurants, supermarkets and cafés will be open regular hours.
- Safety Briefings will be held each morning and before each water event. Please send only one
person per boat to safety briefings, so everyone is able to hear information.
Well I think that’s about it from me,
We can’t wait to meet you all, some again and many for the first time!
Have a safe trip down, keep your eyes open for more emails, and we’ll see you at the Rally!

The beautiful lines of a Paynesville fishing boat.
Buttercup(built in 1908) is just one of those taking part in
the Grand Parade
Steamer's Run St Ayles Skiff Raid from Port of Sale to Paynesville over 3 days (26-28 Feb 2020)
St Ayles Skiffs, originating in Scotland around 2009 based on a design by Iain Oughtred as commissioned by the Scottish Fisheries Museum is a class of largely community-built boats that have captured the imaginations of community groups and boating enthusiasts worldwide. The first skiff built in Australia was at Franklin on the Huon River in Tasmania (the considered spiritual home of the St Ayles movement in this country) in 2012 by a group of women self named the Women on Water. And they have been getting out on local, state, national and international waterways ever since. Of course there is a growing skiff community (Skiffies) emulating their lead which now sees 18 skiffs in the national fleet, in all states but the ACT, Queensland and the Northern Territory. And there are 7 pending launches which may be achieved by year’s end.
Activities involving skiffs include local and regular outings by the club members who build and row them, organise regattas and 'raids', a term adopted to describe expedition style rowing over
days and long distance, paying homage to the distant viking roots that skiffs among other boats hark back to. So, enter the inaugural Steamer's Run St Ayles Skiff Raid from Port of Sale to Paynesville over 3 days (26-28 Feb 2020) involving 4 St Ayles Skiffs. 20 plus rowers from Marlo & Gippsland, Melbourne, Warrnambool and Franklin will row 'Cariad', 'Fast Messenger', 'De Mirrie Dancer' and a yet to be named Mordialloc Sailing Club skiff the 70 odd kms of the beautiful river and lake system.
Thanks to the initial invitation to attend the Paynesville Classic Boat Rally from Peter Medling and a subsequent 'icing on the cake' forerunner to the Grand Parade, a raid, many experienced skiff rowers and others with less experience jumped at the chance to explore and row new waterways. Of course it is always good to promote the class which has surely already met the definition of a 'classic'.

Want to get involved with the rally?
Why not volunteer!
Our volleys have a great time attending the Rally, while
helping us bring the party together.
It takes around 70 volunteers to help the Rally run like
clockwork. Areas include water-based assistants, land-based assistants, road management, runners,
information and public assistance, and plenty more.
If you have a special skill or interest, let us know and we will see how we can best use your skills. You can
give us 2 hours or as many hours as you like. Any time will be much appreciated. You can register your
interest on our website – www.paynesvilleclassicboatrally.com.au - or simply phone our coordinator, Linda,
on 0407 531 674 or email us at [email protected].

arrive at
