this year, and many of these can now sail competently around the lake. Some have progressed to buying their own windsurfing kit and using this on the lake. As we now approach winter, the evening sessions have finished so club windsurfing takes place during opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays. During October the water is still reasonably warm, and the winds may be stronger, so we can still have fun on the water.

Aspiring Coaches The club is committed to increasing the skill levels of all our members and will try and help individuals to gain skills and develop in their chosen sport. Certain skills and courses will benefit the club and we will try and help members attend these courses, if funds allow. If you are undertaking training as a coach or developing skills that are essential coaching skills and you want financial support from the club then please follow the link below and complete the web form. The club will consider all requests for support prior to you going on the course, based on the information you have submitted and the current funding priorities. It is expected that you will complete the form below 1 month before going on the course. The member is expected to book a place on the course, pay the course fees and attend the course. If the club offered support then a payment will be made after you have attended and passed the course, a copy of the certificate is needed to confirm this. Canoe Section Canoe Section meeting on Thursday 24th October starting at 7pm. This is open to all paddlers in the club and is your chance to shape the future development of the club. Please let Trevor Coldron know if you will be attending so we can organise a suitable venue. Boathouse Volunteers Needed We need more people to volunteer some of their time for the club. We have no paid staff, and rely on a few people giving up their time to open up the boat house at weekends, and evenings through the summer. Ideally we need at least 3 volunteers for the boat house to open. These are to cover the Office, Issue Equipment and provide Safety Cover. Role descriptions, explaining what is required for each of the roles are available on the club website, under Volunteering. Please have a look and if you think you could offer some of your time to the club, please e mail [email protected] stating which roles you are interested in. The club requires all volunteers to have a CRB check and will organize this for you. Water Sports experience is not necessary for many of the roles, and all club members can apply. We also have opportunities for volunteer lake rangers, website developers and conservation + Grounds Maintenance workers. These are not essential to keep the boat house open but applications for these roles are also welcome. Voluntary work is very rewarding and highly regarded by employers so assisting your club could also enhance your CV. We try to keep the boat house open at weekends until 2pm, but if we don’t have sufficient volunteers available then occasionally we may have to close to members.

Sprint Try It session on Saturday 19th October 10am onwards – a great opportunity to try sprint kayaking and receive coaching from a GB Canoeing coach. This event is open to all so come along and give it a try! Canoe Section meeting on Thursday 24th October starting at 7pm. This is open to all paddlers in the club and is your chance to shape the future development of the club. Please let Trevor Coldron know if you will be attending so we can organise a suitable venue. Trip Reports 15 club paddlers completed a 10 mile trip down the River Ouse between Lintin-on-Ouse and York on Sunday 6th October. TRIP REPORT ATTACHED. We will be running a club trip to paddle the River Washburn on Sunday 10th November. The Washburn is a dam release river located near Blubberhouses on the A59 between Harrogate and Skipton. Under "normal conditions" the river is no more than a gentle stream. When the top dam is releasing it turns into 3 km of fast, exciting Grade 2-3 white water. When (or if) you get to the bottom you can go back and do it again as many times as you like! This trip is ideal for paddlers who have some moving water experience and want to move on to something a bit more challenging. It is not suitable for beginners. Places are limited to no more than 6 for safety reasons - 6 paddlers to one coach/leader. If you are in any doubt whether this trip is suitable for you talk to Bob Finch on 07950 145424. If you still want to go after that, put your name on the list at the boathouse! We are planning to run further trips throughout the winter months with something to suit all levels of ability and experience. Please check the website and noticeboards at the club for details. Club pool sessions have started on Thursday evenings at Dearneside swimming pool. Anyone wanting to attend these sessions should let Trevor Coldron know or put their name on the sheet on the club noticeboard. Club boats and kit are available for these sessions but we need help transporting boats to and from the swimming pool. If we don’t get enough help the sessions will be restricted to people bringing their own boats – you have been warned!

*New* Open Water Swimming Section Tips for Open Water Swimming in colder water.

Firstly you do not after be super human or mad to do this. Through experience we have found that as the water temperature reduces it is still possible to have an enjoyable swim in the lake. If you start or continue swimming as the water gets colder then help and experience will be on hand at every session. Manvers Winter OWS Tips:

Keep your open water swimming going week after week as you get used to the water temperature reducing week by week, even if you miss a week then you will still be ok. We will swim every Saturday through the winter. There are some session through the week also.

Keep your hands warm. Buy and wear 3mm gloves having “warm” hands helps – The ones from decathlon seem to be the favourite.

Keep your feet warm. Buy and wear 3mm booties again, The ones from decathlon seem to be the favourite.

Keep our head warm. Wear 2 swim hats, even better buy and wear a neoprene swim hat, even better still get a diving hood from the diving shop down Wath.

Wear a rash vest under your wetsuit.

Use Vaseline on your face this helps stop brain freeze

Enter lake slowly let your wetsuit fill with water and acclimatise for a few minutes before setting off swimming. We continue on Saturday morning throughout the winter. Hope to see you there.

Sinky Legs??-Remember to BELCH Adjusting any one of these strategies may affect your sinky legs

A combination of all five should improve your streamlined position in the

water

Work through them methodically until you find the combination that suits

you

This is like juggling. Easy when you have only one ball/focus, trickier

as you introduce more.

Back

Press your hands Backwards towards the wall of the pool behind you. Press back= Forward Motion-Good ! Press down= Upward Motion-this will lift your front end-Bad !

Exhale

Ensure you exhale fully and continuously-never holding your breath as this lifts your front end-bad!
