BUILDING GREAT MEN

03It is a great honour to be part of the boarding community at St Peter’s College. Our boarders are offered much more than a home away from home; they are nurtured and guided as they embark on a journey of academic, social and character development.

Our dedicated boarding staff are instrumental in providing care and support for each of our boarders. We believe that boarding should be an enjoyable and memorable experience and we are firmly committed to providing this.

It is our goal to compliment the world-class education provided by St Peter’s College with a caring homely environment for the boys in our care. We respect the great responsibility entrusted to us from parents and we honour this obligation by ensuring strong lines of communication.

In addition to the extensive co-curricular program offered by the School, boarders can enjoy a wide variety of activities to maximise their experiences. The strong bonds which are forged between the boys are reinforced through weekend recreational activities, boarding house competitions and a range of inter-school social opportunities.

St Peter’s College is a modern boarding environment where every boy is nurtured and can flourish. We invest in all boarders’ individual pursuits and are committed to supporting them to achieve their dreams. The information included within this brochure provides a snapshot of boarding at Saints. I warmly invite any perspective families to contact me so I can provide a tour of our wonderful facilities and answer any questions relating to boarding. Please do not hesitate to contact me on +618 8404 0400 or [email protected]

BUILDING GREAT MEN

06 Boarding has always held a central place in the life of St Peter’s College and our on-campus Boarding House delivers a safe, comfortable and homely experience. Students and staff live and work together in an extended family relationship to ensure every boy receives the positive support and guidance he needs.

Our vibrant and thriving community of boys from Year 7 to 12, and from all walks of life, are cared for and supported by Boarding House staff including mentors, tutors and support staff. Every boarder has a mentor teacher who meets with him regularly and liaises with academic and support staff when required. Along with the Head of Boarding and their mentor, students are also supported and nurtured by tutors, housemothers and medical staff.

Pastoral Care

BUILDING GREAT MEN

07Communication is vital in developing a culture of trust and security. The Saints Boarding community works very hard to ensure the lines of communication between boys, staff, parents and the School remain open and transparent; ensuring the positive relationship and partnership between the three. This partnership is vital in the ongoing support and wellbeing of your son, while he is at boarding school.

Regular communication with parents is encouraged via a number of different mediums. Each student has his own computer and email address. This provides avenues such as Skype, Facebook, MSN messaging and Twitter and the 21st century boarder has a mobile phone so parents are never more than a text message away.

Regular communication is also maintained through:

• Online Boarding Wiki page on the School portal - Keystone.

• Frequent online academic reporting.

• Parent/teacher interviews.

• Regular publications including:

The School’s fortnightly newsletter.

Saints - A biannual publication.

The Saints Magazine (Yearbook).

Boarding Newsletters.

• Mentor emails.

• Regular phone calls.

Boys in the Boarding House are supported academically and pastorally by the following staff:

• Head of Boarding

• Residential House Mentors

• Resident Tutors

• Gap Tutors

• House Mothers

• Consellors

• Chaplains

• Medical Staff

BUILDING GREAT MEN

11One of the strengths of the Saints Boarding House is to encourage a safe, comfortable, homely environment in which students and staff live and work together seven days a week in an extended family relationship.

The Boarding community endeavours to teach lessons of resilience, respect and tolerance.

Boarders rise at approximately 7:30am, in time for breakfast in the Dining Hall. Following breakfast, there is time to gather books, before strolling down to Muster (House meeting) then over to school for an 8:45am start. The boys head for lunch in the Dining Hall, returning to the House at 1:25pm to change books or meet Mentors. At 1:50pm they depart for further classes in the afternoon.

When lessons conclude at 3:30pm, depending on the day of the week, students are involved in sport training. Others may go on local leave with the Year 12s, and are allowed to visit the city. The afternoon is a time to relax with friends, listen to music, play in the games room or be involved in outside activities such as cricket, football or skateboarding.

Dinner commences at 5:45pm and is followed by a study period between 6:30pm and 8:00pm. During the study period, the boys have access to a number of Academic staff, House Tutors and Gap Tutors who all provide outstanding academic support for your son. The boys may then relax, enjoy some supper and activities in the games room; this is a great time to call home. Juniors (Year 7 - 9) go to their bedrooms at 9:00pm for a 9:30pm lights out and the Senior students, if necessary, may decide in their own rooms to continue with their studies from 9:45pm until lights are turned out.

On the weekends, the boys’ sport takes place on Saturdays and the entire Boarding community attends Chapel on Sundays. The Chapel services are either informal (in house) or formal (in the Chapel) and occur in the evening.

The Boarding House

BUILDING GREAT MEN

12 St Peter’s College provides a well-rounded and balanced approach to caring for boys living away from home. We provide a number of activities to keep your son actively engaged in boarding life.

The weekends provide time for both study and exciting recreational activities. Boarders may utilise the close proximity of the Adelaide CBD after completing their sporting commitments. This provides the time to catch up with friends and purchase any of the essentials.

All students at St Peter’s College are heavily involved in the School sports program; some even play two competitive sports in a season. Most competitive games are played on a Saturday morning with the remainder played mid-week. In addition to the sports program, Saints has a strong tradition of Music, Debating, Mooting and Public Speaking.

Other scheduled activities include Saturday night movies on the big screen and pool and gym sessions on Sunday afternoons. House facilities also include pool and Table Tennis tables, multiple TVs, Xbox, Foxtel, a Basketball court and a grassed games area. The boys also have access to the 136-hectare School property.

In addition to School based activities, the Boarding House Recreation Officer organises a range of activities for the boarders. These activities may include surfing, movies, tenpin bowling, Museum and Art Gallery visits, Adelaide 36ers Basketball games, Adelaide United Soccer games and Port Adelaide and Crows Football games, Arts Festival events, Golf, Ice Skating, Paintball, Go-karting, Mountain Biking and many more.

The Boarding House has a number of very closely fought inter-mentor competitions. These include Basketball, Table Tennis, Tug-of-war, Long Bomb (kicking competition) and academic grade average competitions, which are always hotly contested.
